Self-Hatred and Self-Sabotage in “Beard After Hours”
*Trigger warning for discussion of suicide and depression*
So I re-watched “Beard After Hours” today and was struck by the depth of his self-loathing, self-harm, and the suicidal imagery throughout the episode, much of which escaped me the first time around. If you recall, towards the end of the night Beard finds himself in a church—a common space for people to turn to when they’ve reached the end of their rope—and he says to God something that I think neatly summarizes Beard’s struggle:
“And I am under no illusions that [Jane] could solve what ails me. But when I’m with her, the world just feels… more interesting.”
Now, right before this the dialogue reminds us of Jane’s last name, “There’s this woman, Jane. Last name Payne. P-A-Y-N-E.” The different spelling aside, Ted Lasso has never been particularly subtle in naming its characters. The Midwestern, obnoxiously American protagonist is named “lasso.” The bitter, biting, bit of an acquired taste character is named “tart.” The character who sports prominent facial hair, but whose name otherwise alludes the audience, is called “beard.” I’m not saying anything new by pointing out that the woman promoting this toxic relationship is named “pain,” but here Beard connects what Jane represents to his life philosophy. Written another way, he says that the world is more interesting to him when there’s pain in it.
On a surface level, what Beard seems to be admitting to is that Jane can’t solve what ails him because no girlfriend can magically fix her boyfriend’s mental health—an important message in a show advocating for therapy. But underneath that we have the reading that Jane can’t solve what ails him because she is what ails him. Both literally in terms of being someone who treats him quite badly and metaphorically in terms of being the “pain” that Beard continually chases, despite knowing that it’s not good for him. In “The Signal” Higgins confronts Beard about his relationship with Jane, asking if she makes him greater. Beard appears legitimately receptive to the reminder that he deserves better than her, going so far as to hug Higgins in gratitude.

ngl, the "tedbecca shouldn't happen because we never see m/f friendship on tv" is such an annoying argument to me because—
Ron Swanson & Leslie Knope
Liz Lemon & Jack Donaghy
Joey & Pheobe
David Rose & Steve Budd (although they do have a fling early on)
Haley & Lucas
Meredith Grey & Alex Karev
Jake Peralta & Rosa Diaz
Jake Peralta & Gina Linetti
Cece & Winston
Jess & Winston
Jess & Schmidt
Roz Doyle & Fraiser Crane (they do sleep together once, I think)
and this is literally off the top of my head, just with shows I have seen/can remember. And then even just on Ted Lasso we have Ted & Keeley, Rebecca & Higgins, and Roy & Rebecca!
I think what people really mean when they say "tedbecca shouldn't happen because we never see m/f friendship on tv" is "I've seen one too many shows that were centered on a will they/won't they dynamic get the main couple together without a plan on how to sustain it and then we watched them suffer through weird drama a break ups because the writers wanted to get back to the original dynamic of the show".
