I sat in on a lecture that Ross Gay gave a couple of months ago and it was all about how no one ever talks about the empire of time and how the idea of time colonizes the imagination and poisons a lot of art and artists because they all want to make something that will last forever and outlive them, this was inside a larger lecture about gardening and how poetry should be more like the act of gardening, how you pour all your time and attention into it even though it won't outlast you or even outlast a cold season, but no one would ever say that making things grow was futile or useless, and then he read a poem from an old undergraduate student of his that had never been published and never would be, it was about the students mother dying of cancer, and everyone in the room was crying, and I think about that poem all the time and will probably never hear it again, even though I can only remember the way the poem moved and the last image, and the way it made me feel. It would be easy to be dismissive of these ideas when they're transmitted by a wildly respected writer whose been published widely but I found it very liberating and I really can't stop thinking about it.

i have a new argument against power. like power historically has been immoral - my arguments of the past. . . but now my argument is that power is just a bad idea? like oh maybe we should give the people who are Most Qualified power - people who are responsible, intelligent, wise, etc - but ultimately people can barely hold the limited autonomy they have on themselves responsibly (probably because we have to navigate avenues of power both above and sometimes below them) much less power over others! I'm responsible for the safety of like multiple younger people. and like I'm doing my best and I think I'm good at safety stuff but ultimately I would prefer not to. someone has to but ONLY because power is rampant and these kids are at the mercy of forces far larger than me and my team

I hate those posts that are like "if you believe businesses have a right to turn people away for being gay, then you can't be upset when they turn you away for not wearing a mask. you can't have it both ways!!!" bc the kicker with that is that the speaker wants it both ways too! We want businesses to be able to turn people away for not wearing masks but not for being gay, and that is a good and right thing to want! But it is counterproductive messaging to reduce it to an issue of mere logical consistency in order to own the other guy when our own desires are just as "logically inconsistent"*

*they aren't inherently logically inconsistent because being gay and not wearing a mask during a pandemic are not similarly situated, but they have inconsistency imputed to them when they are rhetorically positioned as being similar for the purposes of owning ppl with a zingy one-liner
