Adult Life: Week 2
Hello my dears,
Today is the last day of Week 2 (and I say this because my team is moving offices tomorrow, so it’s a “work from home” which means it’s no work day for me because I still have no work to do) and I’m spending it in San Francisco. My wonderful, laid back, male dominated team all decided they wanted to work from the SF office, so I’m on the bus to the SF office.
Google has been, simply put, amazing. The food, the perks, my team, my manager, and the slight glimpse of the scale on the work I’ll be doing have all been ridiculous. The food has been great, the yoga classes are great, the buses are more comfortable than the apartment I’m staying in, and I am slowly making friends outside of my team. Everyone is largely positive, everyone is super crazy smart, and there’s so many things going on (I keep writing out things I hear people doing or research and then deleting them because I’m pretty sure that’s what falls under the confidentiality thing).
Week 1 was like, ehhh, compared to this week. I’m sitting across from this guy who works on Android and he’s been here for three months, and he’s in the same boat I am. My manager and my team both assured me that being useless for the first three to four months is normal and I shouldn’t sweat it, but it’s incredibly stressful. So last week I did nothing, more or less. They gave me a bunch of readings to do and I did them, but it was more like ‘in one ear out the other.’ But I’ve been getting more one on one trainings this week, so I know how my team works, who works on what, what our products are, what I might be working on. So now, I’m planning to redo all my readings because they make sense in the bigger scheme as to why I would have to know them. I mean, the words and policies have a purpose now, which will make reading them and memorizing them that much easier.
California itself is still an adjustment process. My current room situation isn’t awful, but uncomfortable. Because I’m sharing the living room, I can’t just sleep when I need to go to sleep - and to my utter disadvantage, the other girl doesn’t sleep until like midnight, which means lights go on and off, people are talking, etc. until she decides its her  bedtime. But the two girls are both super nice and I really like them individually, I just am in desperate need of my own space. The dark circles under my eyes look like I’m back in finals week, which is horrifying. I’ve been wearing makeup everyday to try and do my best to conceal the horrible condition my skin is in currently.
The apartment search goes on, my friends, and on and on and on. I’m meeting up with this girl who works in a different division in Google tomorrow because she’s looking for a roommate to split a 2 bedroom with  in north San Jose. I think she’s like thirty or something, because I read up on north SJ, and every thread literally says it’s the most family oriented, suburban, boring-ass place ever. Which I’m not thrilled about. It’s also thirty minutes away from Google, which means I’ve still got a pretty hefty commute. I was telling my family (who is the source of this housing problem) that if I’m not going to live in SF, I may as will live in Mountain View (which is where google is) so I don’t have a commute of maybe more than ten minutes. Most people who live in that area bike to work - which is so convenient, I could come and go whenever. But that also doesn’t seem to be happening >.>
I am also looking to buy a car now, because it doesn’t look like I’ll be in SF at any point, and the south bay outside of California is a place where you definitely need a car. I’ve got a long checklist of things I have to do *sigh* and it gets longer rather than shorter. But my job is really great and I’m just enjoying that, and I’m hoping that everything else kind of falls into place.
