The Eleventh Doctor is an interesting example of an autistic coded character because he's simultaneously incredibly low masking and incredibly high masking. He doesn't try to hide that he's different in fact he embraces it. However, he's also incredibly repressed in other ways. He only wants to be seen as strange in the most palatable likeable manic pixie dream boy way possible. He is desperate to hide not only his flaws, but also his age which isn't even a flaw but alienates him from people in ways his particular brand of quirky doesn't to the same extent.

There's a fascinating scene in Amy's Choice where the dream lord, who represents his repressed insecurities, insults The Doctor, not for his moral failings like he does in the rest of the episode, but for having weird hair and clothes. Deep down Eleven is on some level insecure about not fitting in, but wants to pretend he isn't. In A Christmas Carol, he tells young Kazran that the reason bowties are cool is because he doesn't care that they aren't cool. This is Eleven trying to live up to ideal of The Doctor, someone who is always being himself and embraces his weirdness. This is an admirable ideal, but The Doctor as a person does not always live up to the ideal of The Doctor.

I feel like this fandom keeps misinterpreting the Chasitys. Specifically Mark and Karen.

Because every fic I read about them, Mark is this oppressive force on the girls, and Karen keeps her mouth shut and nods along. And while I understand how that can set up some really interesting plots, I think it overlooks how they're really a lot more like The Addams Family.

They just have this weird shared interest, and they're all dressed in their little pastels, and the town doesn't understand them but that's okay because they understand eachother. That is just so more entertaining than 'religious man is judgey.'

Also, in the short time we get with them, Mark Chasity is completely pleasant and positive! He's actually the more easygoing of the two!

And they both obviously care a lot about their daughter, at least enough to notice a change in her behaviour.

I don't know how strictly accurate this is, but one of the things I find shocking about watching historical dramas is how many people there are around all the time---according to Madame de... (1953) a well-off French household in the Belle Epoque maintains a workforce of at least 3, and the glittering opera has staff just to open doors. According to Shogun (2024) you can expect a deep bench just to mind your household, and again, people who exist to open doors.

Could people....not open doors in the past? Were doors tricky, before the standardization of hinges? Because otherwise, the wealthy used to pay a whole bunch of people to do it for them in multiple contexts, and I find myself baffled.

My dad and I once had a disagreement over him using the adage "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger."

I said, "That's just not true. Sometimes what doesn't kill you leaves you brittle and injured or traumatized."

He stopped and thought about that for a while. He came back later, and said, "It's like wood glue."

It sounded like a pretty good metaphor to me, but one thing I did pick up on was that whatever broke those shelves, that's not the thing that made them stronger. That just broke them. It was being fixed that made them stronger. It was the glue.

So my dad and I agreed, what doesn't kill you doesn't actually make you stronger, but healing does. And if you feel like healing hasn't made you stronger than you were before, you're probably not done healing. You've got to give these things time to set.
