Chase waited for a moment, straining to hear anything through the door and sighing as he finally assumed the room was empty. Not until he had started to turn to find a secretary did he hear her, and he glanced back with a quirked brow before shrugging and trying the door. Sure enough, it turned in his hand. He sighed some annoyance before letting himself in, looking around the office before settling his attention on the woman behind the desk.
“Uh-- hi,” he started, making a face and looking back over his shoulder before smiling to her lopsidedly and closing the door behind him. "I, ah-- huh, didn’t expect you’d actually be here,” he started, hesitating as though he weren’t sure how to start this conversation, opening his mouth and closing it again with a huff of amusement to his own awkwardness before settling his hand against his forehead to push his hair from his face.
“Well, I guess I should start with who I am,” he cleared his throat, nodding his chin to her. “My name’s Chase-- I started the Pelago Express business recently between the islands. Not sure if you’d heard of it--?”
open to business [ Chase / Veronica ]
Humming along to a song in her head, though the title escaped her, Veronica was lost in a world of pencil taps and occasional scribbles of notes. There wasn’t much at all expected for the day besides organizing Arcadia’s records. That said, the knock on the door was a welcomed change of plans.
At the mention of business, she shuffled a few papers in preparation for potential conversation topics: financial papers, insurance forms, legal documents; they were all there, neat in a pile.
“Come on in.” She smiled, even though the source of the voice couldn’t see past a closed door. “The door isn’t locked.”

“Yeah-- there’s that new place here that might be interested. Something was opening up soon on Leuda, too, I heard,” Chase mused aloud in response. “Don’t know who owns either, haven’t been to the one here yet, actually.”
Chase finished his glass and set it back to the desk, eyeing the second bottle curiously as she opened it. He huffed some amusement immediately to her question, eyebrows darting up.
“No-- none yet, knock on wood--” he stopped to follow the words with the motion, tapping her desk with his knuckles before shrugging and pushing himself to sitting on it as if he were making himself at home.
“I keep my head pretty low and keep a good eye out, at least. Louis keeps the boat in good enough shape I might be able to outrun the, but, ah--” he paused to smirk, lifting his chin to her with an amused chuckle. “That’s what you keep yourself armed for, yeah? What’s in this bottle?”

“Mmhmm; I’m surprised they had even considered it, though I suppose they knew they would be retiring soon anyways,” she said shrugging her shoulders before tipping back more of the wine in hand, finishing what she had poured out into her glass. She set the empty glass aside, picking up a notebook and jotting down some of Chase’s commentary
“Main course…I think you’re right; I’ll have to see if any of the restaurants would want it then,” she said, continuing to scribble in her notebook before setting it down again. She picked up the next bottle of wine on her desk, turning it in her hand a few times before starting to drive a corkscrew into the top.
“How are things going with your shipping business; haven’t run into any pirates, have you?”

Chase settled back against the counter, pouring himself a glass of the white and sighing into the glass before knocking back half of it. He didn’t savor it until the second taste, blinking from his distracted thoughts to her question and looking back to her owlishly in the armchair as though he’d forgotten their conversation a moment prior.
“Oh-- that one? Er,” Chase blinked, squinting to the bottle he’d given her and wracking his memory for a second of thought before shrugging. “Sorta.”
He knocked back the rest of his glass and poured more wine in, taking in a deep breath and trying for the conversation again. “I mean, that one’s one of the newer ones, yeah-- I think it only started stocking about a month ago, but I brought a crate back with me to the office today and thought you might like to try it. I’ll let my boss know you like it, though, heh.”

Chase caught the look over the small hotel room, if only briefly. It embarrassed him slightly, the guilt that Gill knew he was here staying in this room more than any other occupants that stayed there with him. His mind only wondered briefly if Gill were judging him for his current place of residence now that he was here.
That did nothing for the cold business front still emanating from the other man, however, and Chase frowned at that with more disappointment. “Mmhm, I see-- hf, I was going to pay it off soon but my hours...” he let his eyebrows rise as he drifted off on his reason, realizing how observant he was being of the blond for just how little expression he was catching despite the glance of his eyes.
The redhead changed direction, instead. He shrugged largely, sidling around Gill to instead lay the manila envelope on the small hotel table, closed. He considered it for a moment before looking up to the wall in serious thought.
“Well, from the sound of it it seems to me I’d be better off starting a low payment plan, maybe opt for you to give me some high interest,” he continued pondering, turning to look Gill over with an expression one might have if they were thinking of how to get away with a minor crime. “Then maybe you’d have to stop by and see me more, maybe accept the payments in person since I could be very troublesome-- really, that kinda works out well for me, kinda inconvenient but I get to see you. Or,” he paused briefly to shrug, smiling the way he smiled as he thought of a better solution.. “I guess I could pay in full and maybe we could go out for dinner sometime.”
Civic Duty, Nothing More || Chase & Gill
While Chase looked over the contents of the envelope, Gill let himself glance around the hotel room. Two beds. Both occupied, if their surroundings were to be believed. A girl, most likely; some of the belongings left out seemed a little too feminine to belong to Chase, even for as androgynous as he could be at times. Gill was tempted to be nosier— to pace, perhaps, and get a better look around while he did so. But then again, he wasn’t entirely sure he’d like anything he saw. He already didn’t like any of this on the surface as it was.
“I’m not here to chat,” he replied quietly, turning his icy gaze bad to the redhead. “My time is valuable, Chase. I’m here for your debt, or I’m here to coach you on how to pay it back. That’s all. I couldn’t care less how you dressed.” Though he wasn’t able to resist the urge to peek, if only briefly. Under the layer of ice he was still only human, after all.
Maybe he should have called ahead, just to make sure he wasn’t caught in a situation like this. Though typically, according to the city, one tried to make their visit as random as possible in events like this— hoping to avoid the potential fate of missing your debtor as they attempted to evade your call. Maybe I should have just waited in the hallway instead, Gill thought to himself.
Oh well. Nothing for it now.

“Aha, right. That whole thing--” Chase started, disappointed. He sank visibly with that reality, eyebrows bobbing briefly as if chiding himself for having had the thought as he gestured the other man in. Still, he watched Gill pass with a slight smile, taking him in for that moment before business was back on the table.
He should have figured it would be immediate, with the way that Gill hadn’t even bothered exchanging pleasantries it was painfully obvious what sort of meeting this was. Chase glanced to the manila envelope and pulled a face before reaching out to take it, looking at it without even opening it.
“Huh-- well, lucky me. I don’t really need that, but I’ll take your time,” he replied, thumbing the cover open to see the amount before closing it again and settling it against his hip with a nod of his chin toward the other man.
“C’mon, Gill-- what kind of greeting is this, anyways? No ‘hello, how are you?’ It’s nice to see you too. It’s been a while. You look great,” he huffed some offense with his smirk, eyes glancing over Gill again before more judgmentally to his own attire as he pushed his hair back from his face. “I only wish I’d had some warning or I’d have dressed better.”
Civic Duty, Nothing More || Chase & Gill
“Oh, sprites,” Gill sighed as Chase came to the door in his pajamas. Gill palmed his face, rubbing the corners of his eyes with his thumb and forefinger as he tried to re-shuffle the reality in front of him into something more palatable. Something he could still somehow be professional about addressing.
“Okay,” he began, looking up again— his face slightly pink where he’d been rubbing at it. Ready to try again. “I’m here on behalf of the city, actually, as deputy acting debt collector at Leuda City Hall. If you have a moment to discuss repayment options?”
He made sure to get the entirety of this sentence out before stepping in to the hotel room, as though having said it had cast some sort of protective spell on himself— or perhaps a curse, for that matter. Something to keep things as chilled and professional as possible. To ruin any chance of pleasantries that might crop up between himself and the pajama’d man.
“I have some paperwork with me that you’re welcome to take a look at.” He held the manilla envelope out for Chase to take, his face an unflinching mask of ice. “There’s a letter within that lists your total debt, as well as the deadline by which you must pay it off before accruing interest. The city has also made me available to you to this morning to help discuss and customize a plan that will work best for you in terms of setting up future payments.”

There hadn’t been much time after Chase had hung up the phone before he finished jotting down everything he needed and tucked his phone into his jacket pocket. He eyed the packages for a few moments, sitting back against the counter and looking over the room for anything to do.
Nothing really kept his attention well when there was a job to be done, however.
By the time Louis arrived up at the location, Chase had settled back into the seat of the captain’s chair on his small boat, taking a breather and looking to the single box that he’d managed to carry down with much ado. He had started contemplating going back up and cracking into a bottle of wine, or maybe searching for a pack of cigarettes among the counter’s drawers when he heard the familiar voice up dock and leaned out of the window with a grin,
“Hey, Lou, welcome to the party--” he leaned his arm on the side with a jaunty expression, casting a glance back to the single box nearby him. He laughed before pushing himself up and stepping back to the dock, cupping a hand up as he called back. “Well-- I’m not currently, so there’s that. I could only pick up one of them, but nothing’s thrown out by it.♪ You’ll be able to make a trip with me today, yeah?”
shipping out [ Louis / Chase ]
“S’alright,” he dismissed his friend’s concerns with an easy going chuckle, already on his way to trying to figure out what to put on his body in order to successfully make it out the door. Pants, probably. That was likely a good first step. “Don’t even worry about it.”
Pants and a cylinder caddy, check. Louis located a clean pair of pants among his laundry, pulling them on with his phone propped up in the crook between his chin and his shoulder. “Sounds good, I’ll see you then!”
At least being up and about meant his sleepiness was ebbing. For as late of a riser as Louis could be, there was certainly something to be said for how quickly he could get himself together to begin the day. He tucked his phone into his newly acquired pants, then multi-tasked a pit stop by the bathroom to freshen up and brush his teeth with a search for a pair of socks and a clean shirt. Once he’d cobbled himself together into something that one might consider analogous to a human being, he pulled his hair back into a hat, donned a jacket, and locked his front door behind him.
A stop in the shop for the caddy was the last thing to hold him back - but even with the caddy in tow, it took Louis only twenty minutes to arrive, just as he’d predicted. Thank goodness for the Scotty Principle, tried and true. Louis let himself into Pelago Express’s side door when he arrived, escorting the caddy through the building and to the back exit, calling down to the docks:

“Hey, Chase! You better not be moving the freight without the caddy!”

Chase jolted awake, blinking and squinting to the clock on the table next to him. It was pretty early still for someone to be stopping by for anything, as far as he was concerned. He yawned largely, stretching his back out before looking across to the second bed in the room - empty, so his room mate was already out and this probably wasn’t for her.
He should probably say something. “Coming,” he called out, finishing it off with an even larger yawn and shaking his head to stay awake.
He rocked himself over the edge, looking himself over and the pajamas he’d shuffled into only a few hours prior before yawning again and starting over to the door.
And if there were anything in that moment that would wake him up, seeing a ghost would. Even if that was just a ghost of the past, it was incredibly potent to make his eyes widen in surprise.
“Er-- Gill? What’re-- you--” he choked briefly on the bundle of words that wanted to come out, shaking his head and squinting slightly as he stepped back to let him inside with a slight smile as though he accepted this ghost was maybe an angel instead. “Uh, wait-- sorry, come in?”
Civic Duty, Nothing More || Chase & Gill
@i-chase-that-feeling
It was always awkward when Gill recognized the name before he showed.
Now, standing in the awkwardly familiar hallway of the Bell Hotel, staring up at the awkwardly familiar plaque (reading room C03) beside the door that so clearly matched the address he’d neatly penned on the folded piece of paper in his suit pocket, Gill felt as though the familiar awkwardness was so palpably thick, it made lifting his arm through it to knock on the door difficult.
Like waving to someone you wished you hadn’t run into. While simultaneously being encased in gelatin.
Still, duty called, and so would Gill. He cleared his throat, ignored the embarrassed heat in his face, steeled his nerves, and knocked curtly on the hotel door. Once, twice, three times for luck in this awful situation — loud, quick rapping that made sure to convey that this was not a friend come to call, but someone clearly on official business. He lowered his hand and waited, folding one hand over the other and trying to make himself seem tall and important and official while he stood in the hotel hallway.

Chase huffed at the disapproval of her expression, or rather the blatant surprise. That made him feel chastised in a way he hadn’t felt since he was a kid, but at least this apparent curfew could be bought off with a bottle of wine. If only the staff he grew up with were so easy to pay off for being out late.
“Yeah, sure,” he chuckled dryly as he turned to go to the small kitchenette area, talking over his shoulder as he started to open the drawers to find the corkscrew that always seemed to wander.
“Work. I work late,” he replied, not feeling the elaboration necessary. He found the corkscrew and sank it into the white wine bottle in his own hand, turning it as he nodded his chin to her.
“What were you doing still awake, anyways? Not that I’m complaining, makes it easier to drink this, anyhow,” he finished as the cork finally popped from the tip, setting it aside before reaching for the red from her. “I was gonna just sneak in and then I saw the light under the door.“

“Hm? Right, Chase--” Chase dragged his attention away from a bottle he’d picked up, looking up to the young man with a brief flicker of surprise before shaking the thought from his head. Not what he expected was the only way to describe that feeling. He smiled, returning the bottle to its shelf and nodding to the younger man.
“Eh, it’s no problem. I didn’t mind the wait-- just nails, though, yeah,” he replied, taking in the body language of the blond with a twinge of discomfort he couldn’t quite place. Perhaps it was because the young man reminded him vaguely of someone he used to know, or perhaps it was just that it was very hard to read for him just now. Was he flirting or just being coy? Both?
“Sure, thanks,“ Chase cleared his throat, deciding it was a coy tactic of an employee in a business. His eyebrows tilted together with a short nod as he started back toward the station. No use being awkward about it. “I was just looking over the stock there, since I’m out of my usual hair creme. But my nails need it more just now, heh.”
preening [ Mistel / Chase ]
Despite being fairly good at building a clientèle, Mistel found himself often picking up the bulk of the walk-ins that came through the salon - especially when his coworkers were especially busy (or especially allergic to taking said walk-ins.) An appointment made only a few hours in advance was practically a walk-in itself with maybe a touch more warning - and after a brief chat with the receptionist on duty when he arrived to start his shift, Mistel was ready to greet the last-minute booker with a smile once he’d spotted him.
“Hello— Chase, right?” he added, begging the man’s attention away from the products available for sale in the front. “Sorry to make you wait, I only just got in. I hope you weren’t waiting long?” He ran his fingers through his hair with a disarming smile. “Nails today, right? I can take you at the station in the back there if you’re ready.♪”

Chase let his pen scratch over the paper, checking off all the official things he needed to. Who it was going to, where that was, what time roughly: the sort of information someone might need to have at the front desk if the delivery guy never came back. He chuckled to himself at that thought, but with pirates in the water it was a good policy still.
He switched the phone over to his other ear as Louis finally answered, smiling wryly to the telltale sleepiness in the other man’s voice. Something he could definitely agree with this morning, at least. He fought back a yawn and instead cleared his throat.
“Awesome,” he replied, relieved that Louis was at least not so sleepy as to not be up for the trip. “Sorry if I woke you up, I know it’s last minute. I’ll make it up to you later. Uh--”
Chase inhaled, looking over the boxes with a brief hesitation before accepting that was a mistake to not take him up on the offer. “Yeah, just one should be good-- I’ll move what I can, but probably better to not blow out my back, heh. Half an hour it is, I’ll leave the side door unlocked in case I’m by the docks when you get here.♪”
shipping out [ Louis / Chase ]
Louis sat up with an abrupt start as his phone rang somewhere across the room. Too far to reach from his bedroll, unfortunately— he’d have to get up. Judging through the open industrial windows of his flat by where the sun was positioned on the horizon (read: not at all near the horizon any longer), it was probably for the best that something had woken him. He’d have to take a look at his alarm clock if it hadn’t been enough to pull him out of sleeping in after a late night.
Tumblr media
“Lovely.” Sniffling and blinking the sleep out of his eyes, he tugged himself out of bed, padded barefoot across the cold metal grating to the kitchen, and flipped his cell open.
“Hello?” he began, doing his best to make his voice sound as though he hadn’t just woken up. Failing at it, too.
“Oh, yeah— of course! I’ll meet you there in—” He paused to think, and scratched his jaw idly - fingernails scraping against the stubble there as he wound his way back to the open windows. He could probably be at Pelago Express in twenty minutes, if he hurried - and that meant his stubble was probably coming with him. Better fall back on the Scotty Principle, just in case.
“Half an hour, let’s say? You need me to bring anything? Cylinder caddy?”

“Aha, makes sense. They were pretty traditional,” Chase replied, chuckling low as he raised the glass to take in its scent once more. Might as well make himself familiar with it to not be surprised by the taste, in case the experiment didn’t suit his tastebuds. It smelled rich, at least-- he raised the glass to her in turn and took a large mouthful.
He was happy with it the second it hit his tongue, at least-- not a flavor he’d feel right to just taste it and waste it. That whole spitting-after-a-sip thing never sat right with him, anyways.
“Mm-- well, seems like a pretty good success here,” he adds after a moment of letting the aftertaste settle throughout his tongue. He licks his lips before taking another sip of it to be sure and nodding. “It’s pretty rich, heh. Little dry for downing a lot of, though-- I’d think this is more of a main course wine, might do well in the restaurants.♪”
Taste Testing is Totally Part of the Job || Molly & Chase
She grinned, handing the glass off to him, and pouring a glass for herself, of course. She inhaled the scent of the wine as well, her shoulders relaxing as though taking in the scent were similar to drinking the alcoholic beverage in hand.
Molly shook her head as his question, pushing some of her hair behind her ear before answering. “No, no- moreso in that the winery really had just started making their own blends at the time. When I had first started here, the old owners just kept to their signature red, white, and fruit wines,” she said, raising her glass to him as well and taking a long sip of the new wine. Though she was only supposed to be tasting, she had not bothered to set out a spitting bucket.
“I had asked them about making other blends…they were pretty on board with it and even helped me with the first few ones I wanted to try out.”

open to business [ Chase / Veronica ]
Someone had told him to stop by the Arcadia City Hall before, but between work on Leuda and work traveling between and drinking a fair share of wine in between that - well, who had the time? Chase eventually found the time, though, when he had an extra few hours before he needed to head back to Leuda. He hoped he wouldn’t need to have set an appointment, though.
He went to the city hall with nothing particular in mind, just that maybe he might drum up some interest in his business. There were plenty of businesses on both islands that would benefit from a cheaper delivery option, anyways, they just needed to know about it... right?
Chase struck up a brief conversation with the secretary in the front, who directed him to someone else, who directed him to some woman named Veronica Kiss and whose secretary was either conveniently not in front of her office or perhaps she didn’t have one. Oh well, how convenient for him.
Chase knocked on her door, waiting for a response before calling through the door: “Hey-- I wanted to talk to you about business, if you had a minute?”

preening [ Mistel / Chase ]
There was little reason for Chase to be coming to the Salon, except for his own preening. After weeks of working on a ship, he always felt the need for a little pampering. His hair was frazzled, but his nails were a mess. One thing at a time, though - he needed to get more styling creme for his hair, but his nails were something he would better leave to a professional.
He’d only made the appointment that morning, so he wasn’t surprised for it to be very busy when he came in. They usually said something along the lines of how lucky it was to even manage to get an appointment here-- especially for a slacker like him that put it off to the last minute.
He waited his time looking over the bottles of styling gels and cremes, not feeling especially impatient with that in mind. It was a day off, that sort of pamper day when he could treat himself to something that wasn’t alcohol.

shipping out [ Louis / Chase ]
Today would be a late start out to Arcadia either way, and Chase found himself having to think hard on his options. He could try to do the entire load of boxes by himself and not be able to take off until after sunset, or get some help and be able to be back by sunset. What was the point of having help if you didn’t ask for it, right?
He had found himself being less prone to stubbornness lately, anyways. It was more fun to have company on the boat usually, and Louis never seemed too put off by it. Chase waved off the customer that had left the enormous sets of packages, taking out his phone and tapping up Louis’ number as he started checking off notes for the order.
“Hey Lou--” he started in as soon as he heard the receiver pick up. “You free? I got a lot of stuff in if you can help me out. Should be one trip with your help, though, if you’re up.♪”
