Hey Slug! do you have any favorite moments for the ships : hifudo and gendice ?

Let me do GenDice first. I'm not a big GenDice shipper, so the GenDice moments I like are less about ship feelings and more about loving Dice feelings.

Every time I've gone past this scene, I've had to stop and DM a GenDice shipper frantically going, "HELP, I LOVE DICE" so it's first on the list. In FP/M+ 9, Gentarou leaves a lunch meeting with Dice to visit his brother in the hospital. When asked where he's going, Gentarou gives very evasive answers ("... Just to the hospital for a bit" "Oh shit, are you feeling okay?" "Yes, I'm just going for a brief visit") and won't show Dice his face. He's clearly closed off in a way that Gentarou isn't usually unless it's something very, very important to him, as was the case with his clothing in FP/M 10. So Dice, bless his heart, immediately drops the subject and then says, "Well, tell 'em I said get well soon, okay?" He doesn't push Gentarou into talking about something that's a big source of discomfort for him and simultaneously provides emotional support. In the process, Dice is also inserting himself into Gentarou's life in a non-confrontational way. Dice has no reason to think the person in the hospital knows who he is, but Dice tells Gentarou to pass this message along anyway, meaning not only "A friend of Gentarou is a friend of mine" but also "Whoever is a big enough part of Gentarou's life for them to care about is also now a part of mine enough for me to care about." Gentarou then responds with one of the most whipped Gentarou faces known to man, but this is, imo, completely justified. I was making that face too.

In FP/M+ 7, Gentarou invites Dice along on an adventure of sorts, i.e. tailing a person working for a casino to find the owner of said casino. I do like how Gentarou asks ("Of course you'll assist me?") since his confidence in Dice's response speaks volumes to how well they know each other, but I like Dice's response even more. He lists a couple reasons why he'll accept and then says, "I'll see this through with you 'til the end." Jakurai said the same thing (paraphrased) to Ramuda once in the TDD volume 3 bonus/Lesson drama track, and it broke me there too. It's not just about this adventure. It's never just about this adventure. It's a promise that yes, I'll accompany you along whatever ridiculousness you're drawing me into now, and I'll keep on going when that's done because I care about you enough to keep going with you, so when you reach the very bitter end, you're going to look back and see that I'm still right by your side and I've never moved once. Of course, that doesn't fit in a manga text bubble. So I make do. But that's how I'm reading it.

I have serious feelings about the concept of sleeping around another person. People are incredibly vulnerable when they're asleep, so to sleep around another person is to not only trust that this person won't hurt them but also that this person will keep the sleeper safe from potential danger. Also in FP/M+ 7, Gentarou and Dice spend the night staking out at a PO box. Dice suggests he and Gentarou sleep in shifts and lets Gentarou sleep first. Gentarou willingly does so, placing himself fully in Dice's care, and Dice does an admirable job. In fact, the next panel shows morning dawning and Gentarou still asleep in the same spot where Dice left him. Dice, in his infinite care for his friends, waits up all night long in the cold (his hood is up) with nothing to do but sit and watch a PO box for a crazy, harebrained scheme that Gentarou cooked up. And he sure as hell isn't going to let Gentarou not get his rest in the middle of it. It's not only that Dice does it, it's that he does it in such an unobtrusive manner, downplaying his offer in such a way that Gentarou won't have a good reason to refuse it. Gentarou wouldn't have let Dice stay on watch the whole night alone, so Dice phrases it in a way Gentarou could plausibly accept. This reminds me of the scene in FP/M+ 5 when Dice pretends to give Ramuda food as part of a serendipitous gambling win even though the timing and quantity/quality of food suggests that Dice hadn't won at all and was simply lying about this to have an excuse to make Ramuda feel better. To Gentarou's credit, Gentarou also returns Dice's favor a few pages later as he keeps watch while Dice snoozes behind him. The absolute trust is mutual.

As for Hifudo, which I do actively enjoy, I have a harder time pinpointing individual moments because Hifudo isn't a moments ship. Doppo and Hifumi don't slip past their usual reserve to share affection with one another; affection is their default state. Their entire lives are built on the central tenet that they love each other deeply. Hifudo moments? Hell, the entire series is a Hifudo moment.

There's Hifudo in Hifumi making his entire exterior persona full of smiles and laughter just so that Doppo won't worry about him (source: FP/M+ 8). There's Hifudo in Hifumi creating the host mode in order to want to do better by Doppo and copy Doppo's happiness (FP/M+ 8). There's Hifudo in Doppo picking up the suit concept from a movie he went out and bought just to try to cheer up Hifumi with (also FP/M+ 8). There's Hifudo in every meal Hifumi makes for Doppo, every joke Hifumi hits him with, every time Hifumi worries about Doppo coming home late. There's Hifudo in every time Doppo helps Hifumi with his fears, every time he sticks up for Hifumi, and every time he works himself to the bone at his office just so he can pay more rent and support Hifumi in a financial sense as well. There's Hifudo in Doppo believing that Hifumi is incredibly strong and powerful and still standing up to protect Hifumi for the moments when Hifumi's burden is too heavy and his inner demons too strong. There's Hifudo in Hifumi trying every which way to give Doppo the comfort and relaxation Doppo so dearly needs. Hifudo is about partnership, about creating something bigger than the sum of its parts. Hifudo is about home.

I just think it’s so cute that we just refer to hifudo as 幼馴染 in the jp and cn fanbase! The phrase means “childhood friend” in Japanese :)

We don’t use this phrase in Chinese (even though they’re Chinese characters), but Chinese speakers interested in Japanese culture use 「幼馴染」 interchangeably with a Chinese phrase that means “childhood sweetheart”…

So what I’m saying is that we refer to hifumi and doppo as drb’s childhood sweethearts and that just warms my heart <3

Cleaner Duties

Removing all Japanese text from speech bubbles and significant foreground items

Redrawing all art formerly obscured by text

Reapplying or replacing background patterns and textures formerly obscured by text

Reporting on your progress via weekly check-ins and advocating for yourself when you need assistance or can’t make deadlines in time

Voluntary assistance in misc. tasks such as proofreading, assisting other cleaners, offering input on translation decisions, helping with future application processes, making memes, etc.

Applicant Criteria

Must be at least 16 to join

Must be willing and able to work in groups and conduct one’s self responsibly

Must be available to complete about 15 pages a month for at least six months

Must be able to complete about 10 pages in one to two weeks. If you can complete your sample test in the two week period, then you are capable of meeting this requirement

And how he has talked about that he doesn´t (romantically) love them but he still genuinely wants them to be happy (despite his trauma) and so in a sense you could say he can´t give them (romantic) love but he is giving them friendship, his care and kindness instead and I-

10 hours is a bit... much... but since I can't drive, car rides are a special treat for me. I feel like a dog. You offer me a ride somewhere, and I'll flip out in sheer excitement. So a road trip sounds like it'd be really fun. I'm probably going to say Matenrou with Jakurai driving, but here's my thought process behind this.

Buster Bros: No offense to any teenage boys reading this, but I would rather die than be trapped in a car for 10 hours with 3 teenage boys, 2 of whom can't get along.

Mad Trigger Crew: I assume Juuto is driving, but he's an emotional driver. I would fear for my life. Plus, Samatoki smokes in cars without even rolling down the damn windows. Helllllll no.

Fling Posse: I think one of them can drive, but I don't know which one. Now listen... they trust each other, right. And that's all well and good. But I'm a random stranger, and I do not trust a SINGLE one of them to successfully drive a car for 10 hours.

Matenrou: Jakurai seems like a really safe driver. He doesn't even let Ramuda distract him from driving, and he has hands free calling enabled. Plus, his car is large and comfortable looking. It is designed to carry people on long road trips. Hifumi might be a bit much to have in close quarters for 10 hours, but honestly? It might not be that bad. If Doppo goes to sleep (as he should, he needs the rest), he'd likely drop the Hifumin act anyway and then just make pleasant chitchat. You know they're listening to some chill-ass music the whole way too. Pleasant vibes. Homemade snacks courtesy of Hifumi in a cooler in the back. Doppo getting a chance to relax for a change. This is really the most manageable one.

Dotsuitare Hompo: Sorry, Rei, my mother taught me not to get into cars with strange men who want to steal my money. Additionally, being in a car with Sasara and Roshou for 10 hours might be fatal.

Bad Ass Temple: If this was not a 10 hour trip, I'd actually choose this car (operating with the assumption that Hitoya is driving. If either one of the other two attempt to take the driver's seat, you'd have to pry me out of Jakurai's mom van with a crowbar). Juushi would probably play his vkei music, which seems fun, and he'd sing along too. Kuukou probably has some bizarre music taste that would appear somewhere around hour 4, but I feel like I'd dig whatever he's into as well. Hitoya seems like he'd be a good driver and simply reeks of "I am a long-suffering dad taking my asshole children to Disneyland" energy, but he also seems like he'd be a great conversationalist. Kuukou would be hella fun to hang out with too. Seriously, this all just sounds like a good time. My concern is that I don't think Kuukou can sit still for 10 hours, and I fear that if I fall asleep midway he's going to, like... fart on me or something. You know? Isn't this a valid concern?
