The Kingdom of Padokea wrapped around the northwest coast of the northernmost continent of the Known World. Despite this, the weather of Padokea was temperate, and the late-spring temperatures coaxed out plenty of fresh blooms across the countryside. With such lush landscapes in abundance, Padokea was best known for its quaint villages and the friendly villagers that resided in them.

Hisoka Morow, a young man that was a gladiator by day and a mercenary by night, was resting in his room on the second floor of an inn at the center of one such quaint village. He sat by the window, entertaining himself by shuffling a deck of playing cards as he stared past the cobbled rooftops and beyond the vast forests that surrounded the town.

His eye was trained on the gnarled, black mountain in the distance – the only thing that seemed out of place in this idealistic atmosphere.

Kukuru Mountain was the home of a very curious family. The royals there were not part of any governing force in the Kingdom of Padokea. They had seemingly no interest in any political affairs, and very rarely made appearances at gatherings. Anyone would say that it was unheard of for a royal family to be excluded from invitation lists, or to decline attending balls or galas comprised of nothing but the bluest blood in the world, but the elusive Zoldyck family was an exception.

It wasn’t quite as disrespectful as it sounded. It was not that they were being shunned, exactly, but rather it was that most royals and nobles alike would prefer to keep their connections with that particular family out of the public eye.

The Zoldyck family, after all, was first and foremost, a family of assassins.

Sometime within the last hundred years or so, they were recognized officially as a royal family. No one seemed to know what council decided it, or what the purpose of the decision was, but it didn’t matter. The family was fabled to be so demonically powerful and ruthless, that there wasn’t a soul on Earth who would try to argue the authenticity of the title to them.

The fluttering of cards filled the air as Hisoka smiled and licked the corner of his mouth in anticipation.

His favorite pastime was tracking down powerful fighters, and then killing them. Watching their confidence sap away into immobilizing fear was so delectable, so irresistible, that it was Hisoka’s only driving force in his life. The impending hunt for a good fight whet his appetite, and the castle on Kukuru Mountain promised a variety of meals that would satisfy his cravings, at least for the time being.

Hisoka had done as much research as anyone could about the Zoldyck family, and now all there was left to do was a field study.

An extremely interesting thing about Hisoka's aura based personality analysis is that out of all the categories, the MANIPULATOR category is the only one with a pronoun. His. "Does things at HIS own pace."

HMMMM I WONDER WHO HE COULD BE SPEAKING ABOUT. Who hes thinking about and who he based this off of. Who's the only manipulator that tolerates and enjoys hisoka's company??? Starts with an Illumi ends with a Zoldyckkkkkkkkkkkkkk............

This is one of the things that make it so obvious they were constantly hinted at to be together from the very beginning by togashi. All these little details here and there are just so deliciously placed!

i kinda wish himaruya gave kiku long hair in all the pre-meiji era stuff, not because historical accuracy always has to be stuck to rigidly (artistic license is great and fun!)—but because it kinda misses out on the opportunity for some in your face, but very nice symbolism when he gets a Dramatic Haircut and puts on western dress for the first time with the end of isolationism. since the style of long hair for japanese men was partly related to cultural influences from china, and mmmm just so much going on there about what it says about his changing relationship and view of yao—who was in many ways, his mentor for centuries and seen as the prestigious empire to emulate.

i like the idea that yao’s memories about the distant past are not strictly reliable. and that it’s the same for any ancient, long-lived nation—and they therefore cannot really serve as perfectly objective and accurate accounts of the past for human historians. did the yellow emperor really exist in 2500 BCE? is he wholly made up, or a mix of a real person and embellishment? a deity who was later refashioned as a human king in people’s minds? who knows—when it’s so long ago that modern archaeologists and historians cannot fully establish the historicity and have all sorts of competing theories? imo, the soul and mind of a nation is bound to their people’s, and chinese historiography, like those of other nations, is fluid. so, some things are blurry and ambiguous even to the old nations, just like how we ourselves might have difficulties recounting very early childhood memories; even when we’re older, we misremember things.

that isn’t to say there aren’t some fascinating and insightful perspectives one couldn’t learn from an ancient nation who has been there to see thousands of seasons; yao would say ‘i remember clearly the path of the yellow river and the ferocity of its floods when the world was young and i had not even a written language’. sometimes, the yellow emperor feels real to him, sometimes he doesn’t—but yao remembers with crisp clarity the very first time he carved his first characters into tortoiseshell bone, as well as the sight of the plum blossoms opening in spring on a particularly beautiful morning three thousand years ago.

hello! do you have any aeon fics to rec? and/or aeon fic authors? i've read practically all your aeon fics (i love them all!!!!!) and i want more but the tag on ao3 is so overwhelming 🥺

Full disclosure: I don't read as much Aeon as I probably should (mostly because the tag is a nightmare to navigate without some serious filtering), but I'm trying to change that and be more supportive of Aeon writers! That's the only way we could get more content tbh

If you haven't already, please check my bookmarks on ao3. It's very much a work-in-progress, but each and every fic included on there is what I consider god-tier Aeon.

As for writers, I recommend:

(spoilers about aeon in re4make)

"Leon rejects Ada at the end, Leon is no longer interested in Ada, Aeon R.I.P, etc."

actually… no.

Leon realizes that hanging the unconscious Ada is Saddler's plan to lure him out. Leon talks about it himself, because it's very obvious.

But what is Leon doing? Excitedly pronounces Ada's name and runs to save her, because he understands what will happen to her if he does not. He voluntarily goes into Saddler's hands to save Ada, because he cannot risk her life and safety. Risking himself for her, knowing what would follow if he don't.

When Ada first saved him and Ashley from Saddler by taking the fight to him, Leon turned around, as if he was thinking that he wanted to be with Ada in this battle. But he can't.

And his look when Ada, having recovered, saves him from Saddler again and stands shoulder to shoulder with Leon? This already says a lot. As well as the fact that they fought together. As a team, as the partners they are. Even six years after Raccoon City.

THIS IS A VERY BIG AND STRONG AEON MOMENT. Officially one of the best they've had in their entire history. How can people not love it?

Leon didn't fly with Ada as she suggested. But that doesn't mean Leon rejected Ada. Flying away with her meant leaving Ashley, and that's just something Leon couldn't do. Similarly, he didn't leaving Helena into RE6. But he knows that they will meet again. Ada is literally talking about it.

Leon rejected Ada so much (he didn't) that she promises that they will meet again. He rejected Ada so much (he didn't) that he looks after her with such a look, unable to turn away until he hears Ashley behind his back.

I think many misunderstood their "goodbye". It sucks because the moment is great.

"Leon asks Ada if she's using him, so he's not interested in her anymore."

That's not how it works. Leon asks her about it precisely because he is interested in her. He wouldn't have asked that question if he didn't care. He's asking because he cares. People use this without thinking about the context of the dialogue.

He asks Ada if she has changed. He thinks about asking the whole trip, but worries until Ada notices his excitement. And all this after Luis' words that people change.

He's damn interested.

(you may not like the phrase "using", but Aeon-fandom figured out back in 2019, after the release of re2make, that the scene with the kiss was a manipulation, after which everything went downhill, and the scene in the sewer was the true moment of their love. It's not like it's playing against Aeon.

so yes, such a question on Leon's part is fully justified. they farewell in re2make quite differently than in re2 original.)

Leon didn't reject Ada. Leon is still interested in Ada. Leon still has feelings for Ada. Leon is still worried about Ada and is willing to risk himself for her. They goodbye much better than in the original.

Around the 4-6 minute mark Matt Mercer talks about his characterization of Leon and how he relates to Leon. Wanting to be a good person despite the decision not necessarily being the smartest one. He also talks about Leon’s love life briefly. Around the 5:30 mark he talks about how Leon’s only personal need seems to involve anything with Ada Wong. She’s the only remaining facet of his life where it’s a “personal need.”

I think that people misinterpret the relationship a lot even to this day, particularly people who never fully played the games. No one thinks that the relationship is clean and perfect, cut and dry. It’s messy and you want to doubt yourself even. Toxic is term used a lot, yet in almost every Ada campaign, all she does she go against what she’s instructed to so that she can save Leon. As a viewer, we see Ada’s actions and her thoughts. We see her in her entire re4 campaign trying what she can do to save Leon. Without her, he would not have survived re4.

“It’s not a real Resident Evil game ending with Leon without Ada swooping in to give him a rocket launcher.”

It’s obviously not perfect, but it’s a realistic one for their circumstances. Two people who realize that they can’t be together but somehow seem to run into each other either way. In re5 offscreen they even attempt to make something happen, relating to “that night” in Damnation, and Ada wanting to “carry on from where we left off that night,” with Leon responding with a chuckle and sigh, “any time but now.”

Almost every single voice actor for Leon and Ada have explained their character dynamics that they somehow seem to always find their lives tangled together in the most messy ways but it works. But especially in re6 we see their characters working together in tandem. Just without missing a beat, they trust each other with their lives, but maybe not fully with their hearts. They both don’t have the lifestyle to maintain a real relationship, but they realize that. Ada rushes each time she’s worried about Leon. And Leon literally jumps off a flaming building without a thought the second he sees Ada laying lifeless on the rooftop.

no no no bc will asking hannibal, “how do you see me?” in episode one is so insane bc he wouldn’t have asked just anybody that. he was not inviting the scrutiny of anyone and i mean anyone. he didn’t want people to perceive him. the way he dresses, his glasses, his biting wit, his teacher persona… they’re all methods of self-protection to keep people from looking too closely. but he asks hannibal what he sees bc he really wants to know, and hannibal, who he has just met, doesn’t even hesitate to tell will something that no one else ever has before. something dangerous, something powerful said with admiration. with a smile.

ok i get that the "hannibal despises rudeness and yet fell in love with the rudest person ever" trope is funny and all

but it kinda makes me uncomfortable because at the end of the day, it's just not true

will is honest and assertive. he's snarky and passive aggressive. he avoids people in general. but that's not what hannibal is referring to when he talks about rudeness.

he couldn't care less about social etiquette and whatnots.

when hannibal mentions rudeness he's talking about intentions, actions and consequences.

will is meticulous. he doesn't improvise. he plans every action. that's the opposite of rude in hannibal's terms.

thinking about how the toxicity in hannibal works so well not only because it's based on reciprocation but also because hannibal expresses himself through violence, uses it to communicate (turning dimmond into a heart because he is heartbroken, stabbing will to let him feel the pain he felt when will betrayed him, attempting to eat will to come to terms with his love for him) and will understands violence better than anything else ("but violence is what you understand") - they literally complete each other. they give and they take away. and they love each other through acts of violence.
