Art Nouveau is known for having flowing lines and is frequently asymmetric. The color is usually intense. Its inspiration came from natural objects such as flowers and animals.

Art Deco influenced more than art. It influenced cars, flatware, clothing, and buildings. It was more linear and deterred from European classicism.

This is not a room, but it is a piece of furniture that is specific to the area I live in. The houses in my neighborhood are predominantly from Italian families. The houses built by these families have stoves in the basement from when the house was built. The families would cook in the basement and entertain upstairs. This is a stove that is from the 1920′s (I have had multiple assessments, no one can actually name the year this stove was made). This is the most historic thing in my house. I just sold it.

Portfolio #4
It is kind of difficult for me to draw what I am about to try to explain. As nurses I think we all know what it is to get an admission. I think we can all appreciate that it is frustrating when we get a patient that has some mysterious history that we do not know about because they were never admitted into our care and they are a bad historian. What I suggest, as more of a computer program design, is to change the way we retrieve information on the patient. We all know of the packet of papers we get, the nurse to nurse, the ambulance report, and the medication list (this sometimes will give us hints as to what the patient has for conditions), but what if we did not have to work as hard to piece together the work? What if instead, it was stored in one place that the patient should have with them at all times? I am thinking of their medical card. What if instead of trying to figure out where our patient has been or what they have for PMH, the insurance company logs all of this information into its database and only releases it on a need to know basis. The nurse would call the insurance company, the company would verify the patient with a specialized code and patient identifiers, and they would unlock documents for staff to see for a smoother transition into care at the hospital/facility. The patient should be using their medical card whenever they do anything with their health anyway, so it should be able to accurately track what is happening with the patient. The patient is paying for the insurance, so it could be more of a service than just covering them for healthcare.
I clearly haven't ironed out all of the details, but like Naccarella notes in the article, it would emphasize accountability and it would provide an extra safety measure to ensure the patient is getting the most beneficial care possible.
Below is what the pile of papers look like (this clearly is not a patients file) for admission. We sift through and find relevant information.

Below is my suggestion. I did not know how to draw this or make it an org chart or anything, so I used a photo from online. There was no way I was going to be able to depict it this well without attempting to draw this exact thing.

RN Portfolio #3:
So, this is probably one of my favorite house plants. I love it because of two reasons. The first reason is the pop of color that it gives to its grey clay pot and secondly because in the mornings, there are drops of dew sitting on the ends of eat leaf. It is absolutely relaxing to me. The color makes the plant look healthy and alive. There are some areas where the color has drained, but for me it just adds more attraction.
Another item in my home is my lamp. I bought this thing years ago because I liked the way that it looked. I had always wanted a large “fancy” lamp for my living room. It kept the room dimly lit and added a decorate touch. The shape of the metal has a rectilinear shape to it (which makes it look sleek and mature).

The design of the lamp makes the experience by giving appropriate lighting to the room while not taking the eye away from the rest. It blends nicely but still provides a great source of light.
I feel happy when I look at the lamp. I experience sight because it helps me see.

I use humor as a selling point. It usually works for me. Some people don't get it, but my theory is “you cant make everyone happy”. I chose to discuss aseptic technique (mostly because that is all I have been talking about at my new job in the OR for three weeks). It is composed of cleaning bacteria/contaminants of the body in preparation of performing an invasive procedure. I would use humor to describe it in 50 words or less by saying “your body has defenses. It fights off things it does not recognize. It usually causes an immune response which makes people feel crummy. Don't be that guy who makes others feel crummy. Wash your hands.... yes, like they do in Greys Anatomy”.  People could practice opening packets, washing their hands (scrubbing), putting on gowns, donning gloves, and communicating to gain help from others to stay sterile.  This is something that nurses are primarily responsible for maintaining in the OR, so it does not require much emphasis from us to ensure that the design of the process is perfect. When all else fails, tell others “I am doing this for the patient”. No one argues when it comes to the patient. Also, if ever you question sterility, the item is not sterile.

I chose “reduce noise” this week. I chose it because I just left a psych unit where I strongly believe that louder octaves of noise caused more agitation with the dementia population (I have not looked into the studies). What I was thinking would be beneficial is having a stop light (like the ones on maternity floors) to measure the amount of noise happening around the patients. It would be in the "test and redesign phase” of the process if I did that. I would have repurposed the light already used in hospitals on maternity floors, for psych floors.

Current Kitchen
This is my current kitchen. My boyfriend and I just bought this house and we actually had to down size/down grade on some items. Our kitchen was much larger at our other home.
In this kitchen, there is no function. Everything is condensed to one side. The wall by the fridge and the window by the trash make it difficult to create better flow. We have 3 functioning cabinets and 4 draws to store all of our kitchen needs. We have no counter space for food prep and it is difficult for both of us to be in the kitchen at the same time.
I would inspire others to handle this project by first saying to look at other kitchen designs with space size similar to your own and decide which function you like best. One that bests suits your lifestyle and needs. Be inspired by other designs.
After decided your inspiration/goal, I would next suggest contacting someone to help create the type of kitchen you like. For myself and my boyfriend, we actually needed to hire a contractor to bring the lower window up to the same height as the other windows in order for us to place more counters in this space. We are still waiting on the project to be created because we do not want a gaping hole in our kitchen in the middle of winter.
