I for one enjoy that this scene in particular did NOT devalue the importance and weight of platonic love. It's not tragic that his best friend does not love him back romantically! Charles loves Edwin!! He even said they have all the time in the world to figure out whats between the way he loves Edwin and the way Edwin loves him!! Is that not so much more beautiful?

I feel like an essential part of Starscream is that specific type of superiority complex that you develop when you've been through a lot. There's the need to feel like your suffering meant something and it wasn't for nothing. You need to believe that you're special and important for everything you've been through to have meant something, it's easier than accepting that the world doesn't care about you. There will be no retribution and no one will be sorry. It's acting like you're special because of how badly you wish you were even though you know that you're not. You need people to know who you are and to love you, but there's no real reason for anyone to. It's yearning for power and control because you've never had that. And I think that's essential to understanding Starscream's character.
