American Thoroughbred Peter Pan
Peter Pan (1904-1933) was an American thoroughbred racehorse (not to be confused with Australia’s Melbourne Cup winner under the same name) who was a winner of the Belmont Stakes and he would later become an important sire.  He would win 10 of his 17 career starts with earnings of $115,000+.   Peter Pan was owned and bred by James R. Keene and was sired by champion Commando whose bloodlines include influential sire Lexington.  His dam, Cinderella, was bred by Hermit who was the Epsom Derby winner in England.  Trained by James Rowe Sr., Peter Pan would win four of his eight starts as a 2-year-old.  He won his debut race at Sheepshead Bay and only three days later he won the Surf Stakes.  Three starts later, he would win the Flash Stakes at Saratoga Race Course.  Peter Pan was versatile as he could win short or long and his biggest win as a juvenile was in the Hopeful Stakes where he carried 130 pounds and won the race by two lengths.   As a 3-year-old, Peter Pan would have his best year winning six of nine starts.  He won the Belmont Stakes at 1 ⅜ miles after two runner-up finishes to begin his sophomore campaign, the Tidal Stakes, the Advance Stakes, the Standard Stakes and the Brooklyn Derby.  His best race may have been his victory in the Brighton Stakes.  A frontrunner, Peter Pan did not break well under regular jockey Joe Notter and was in the back of the pack early in the race.  He moved to midpack around the final turn and put in a furious rally to get up and win the race by a nose.  His horse racing career would end shortly afterwards as he pulled up lame with a bowed tendon in a later race (which would be how his sire was injured as well).  However, he would be named 1907 champion 3-year-old. Peter Pan was retired from horse racing and he began stud duty in Kentucky and in France.  When he returned to America, he was part of the dispersal by the Keene estate who passed away in 1913.  Peter Pan would be purchased for $38,000 by H. P. Whitney who would send Peter Pan to his New Jersey farm.   At stud, Peter Pan would sire some of the famous racehorses during that era.  Puss In Boots, Vexatious and Prudery would all become champion fillies.  Two of his sons would become important sires: Black Toney who would be the sire of two Kentucky Derby winners Black Gold and Broker’s Tip; and Pennant who would be the sire of Hall of Famer Equipoise.  Overall, Peter Pan would sire 20% Stakes winners.  As a broodmare sire, Peter Pan produced Kentucky Derby winner Whiskery along with Preakness Stake’s winners Bostonian and Victorian, and Hall of Famer Top Flight.   Peter Pan passed away in 1933 and was elected into the Racing Hall of Fame in 1956.  In his honor, Belmont Park runs the Peter Pan Stakes which is a final prep for the Belmont Stakes.

The brief but brilliant career of Commando
Commando was a thoroughbred racehorse who only raced nine times, but would become a champion in both years he raced and he was never headed throughout the race in all of his victories.  He would also become an important horse racing stallion as he sired a pair of champions, but his life would be short lived due to a cut on his hoof that would eventually prove fatal. Commando was one of only 19 foals officially sired by Racing Hall of Famer Domino.  Out of a dam (Emma C.) that was given to trainer Billy Lakeland from owner James R. Keene to race, Commando would be acquired by Keene as a yearling and he would begin his training under the care of James G. Rowe Sr.  The young colt didn’t look precocious to his owner, but he would win his 2-year-old debut in the Zephyr Stakes in June, 1900. Commando would prove his debut was not a fluke as he would win the Great Trial Stakes followed by the Montauk Stakes winning by eight lengths.  He would add the Brighton Junior Stakes and Junior Champion Stakes to his winning resume and likely would’ve won his final start that year if not for jockey error.  Commando held a big lead in the stretch in the Second Matron Stakes when his jockey looked around for competition and eased up on the colt.  Beau Gallant would catch him and give Commando his first defeat.  Despite the loss, Commando would be named both champion 2-year-old and 1900 Horse of the Year. Commando would make his 3-year-old debut a winning one in the Belmont Stakes which was at 1 ⅜ miles that year.  His official winning margin was a half-length over The Parader and he set a new Stakes record of 2:21 flat.  After a four length win in his next start in the Carlton Stakes, Commando would make his final start in the Lawrence Realization Stakes.  When Commando took the lead entering the stretch, it looked like he would win under wraps.  However, Commando broke down with a bowed tendon, but valiantly kept running to finish 2nd behind The Parader.  Even though he only started three times, Commando was named the 1901 Horse of the Year.  He would retire from horse racing with seven wins and two runner-ups from nine starts earning just over $58,000. Commando would stand at Keene’s Castleton Farm and only sired 27 foals in four years.  However, 10 of them would be Stakes winners including: 1907 champion 3-year-old and winner of the Belmont Stakes Peter Pan; Celt who won the 1908 Brooklyn Handicap and would be America’s leading sire in 1921; and Colin who was two-time Horse of the Year and undefeated from 15 starts.   In early 1905, Commando perished due to tetanus from a cut on his hoof.  Commando would be America’s leading sire two years after his death in 1907.  In 1956, he was inaugurated into the Racing Hall of Fame along with his sons Peter Pan and Colin.

The surprise foal: Broomstick
Tumblr media
Broomstick was a thoroughbred racehorse who won a few major Stakes and was never a champion on the track.  However, he would go on to be an important sire for the famed Whitney family as he sired 25% Stakes runners including two Kentucky Derby winners. Milton Young was the named breeder of Broomstick who was foaled north of Lexington, Kentucky at McGrathiana Farm.  However, he was bred at Castleton Stud by Foxhall Daingerfield who thought that Broomstick’s dam, the unraced Elf, was barren (not in foal).  Elf would be sold for only $250 to Young and the next year, Broomstick along with nine other yearlings were sold for $17,000 to Samuel S. Brown who was a member of the Jockey Club and the owner of two racetracks in Kentucky. As a 2-year-old, Broomstick would win his first three starts for trainer Peter Wimmer including the Great American Stakes.  He would lose the next six starts of that year likely due to the high imposts he was asked to carry and he earned just over $25,000.   Broomstick was best as a 3-year-old under trainer Bob Tucker winning a few major Stakes races including the Travers Stakes, the Flying Handicap and the Brighton Handicap earning nearly $38,000.  In the Brighton, Broomstick was the lightweight in the field and he would break the American record for 1 ¼ miles in a time of 2:02 ⅘.  This record would stand for nine years until his son, Whisk Broom II, broke it with a time of 2:00 flat in the Suburban Handicap.  Broomstick would not win a Stakes as a 4-year-old, but he did win five of 15 starts and earned $11,000+.  He would retire with a record of 14 wins from 39 starts and earned just under $75,000.   Broomstick retired to stud at Brown’s Senorita Stud and was eventually sold after Brown died in 1906.  On November 6, 1908, Brown’s family heir decided to disperse their horses.  On the advice of trainer Andrew Jackson Joyner, who broke a yearling by Broomstick named Whisk Broom II, Broomstick was purchased for $7,250 by Harry Payne Whitney. Broomstick would stand at Brookdale Farm in New Jersey until 1914 when he was moved to some newly purchased land outside of Lexington, Kentucky.  Broomstick would be America’s leading sire for three consecutive years 1913-1915.  His best foals included: Whisk Broom II; Kentucky Derby winner Meridian; the English 2,000 Guineas winner Sweeper II; 78 race winner TippityWitchet; two-time older handicap champion Cudgel; and Kentucky Derby winner Regret who would be the first filly to win that race.  He would sire a total of 280 foals of which 69 would become Stakes winners and most all were bred by Whitney. After his death in 1931 at the age of 30, Broomstick would be America’s leading broodmare sire in 1932 and 1933 mostly due to the success of homebred Equipoise.  In 1956, Broomstick was inaugurated into the Racing Hall of Fame.

The Red Carpet of Horse Racing
The West Coast, and especially the state of California, boasts its fair share of famous racing venues and major stakes races. Del Mar and Santa Anita are cathedrals of horse racing in Southern California, while Golden Gate Fields does well to represent the northern part of the state. However, as great as those venues may be, none of them has as much glitz, glamor, and history attached to their name as Hollywood Park Racetrack, located in Inglewood, California, under the shadow of the famous Hollywood sign and a few miles north of Disneyland. And no thoroughbred horse race exemplifies the mystique of that track as well as the Affirmed Handicap, which is run on its surface every June. Inaugurated as the Silver Screen Handicap in 1979, then renamed in 1993 to honor the legendary 1978 Triple Crown winner, the Affirmed Handicap is one of the most famous horse races in the country, with a six-figure purse that draws the most prestigious trainers and jockeys from all across America to the paddocks of Hollywood Park. The 1 1/16 mile ride has seen its share of great finishes over the years. In 2013, Tiz a Minister came from all the way at the back of the field to take the crown by a single length, with famed jockey Corey Nakatani on the mount. Nakatani led Tiz a Minister on a masterful ride, beginning their move when they were a full 16 lengths back of the lead by splitting horses as they came around the second turn. From there, it was all determination, as Tiz a Minister flew past the field and nipped Den‘s Legacy and Manando - the two heavy favorites - to add his name to the list of winners of the event and pocket a little more than $100,000 for his owner. While his winning time of 1:45.79 fell short of the stakes record of 1:40.83, which was set by General Challenge in 1999, it was still a remarkable run, and one that reaffirmed how scintillating the race game can be. The excitement on the track is always a reason to catch a raise, and especially one of the most renowned in the country, but in the case of the Affirmed Handicap the venue is also a huge draw. Hollywood Park Racetrack is one of the more beautiful in the country. Sitting under the sunny Southern California skies, its nickname as the track of lakes and flowers is well-earned, with two large lakes in the infield and a range of lovely bloomers out all year long. The track also has a storied past, as it was first opened in 1938 with a design by legendary racing architect Arthur Froelich with the backing of Hollywood luminaries like the Warner Brothers and Al Jolson. The combination of history, beauty, and world-class thoroughbreds makes the Affirmed Handicap one of the premier racing events in the country. And if the 2014 version even approached the thrills of last year’s event, it’s sure to be worth watching.

Emerald Downs: The Home of Thoroughbred Horse Racing in the Northwest
The Emerald Downs horse racing track touts itself as being the home of thoroughbred racing in the Northwest. Located in Auburn, Washington, its name was inspired by Seattle, which also called the Emerald City. Emerald Downs: A Little History The Emerald Downs thoroughbred racetrack was inaugurated in 1996, on June 20th. The first meet ran for 100 days until November 4th. This horse racing track was built to replace Longacres Racetrack, which shut its doors in 1992 after operating for six decades. After this track was closed, there were no horse racetracks in Western Washington, so between 1993 and 1995 there was no racing in this region. However, horse racing continued to take place at Playfair Race Course and Yakima Meadows in Spokane. The Emerald Downs Facilities The Emerald Downs thoroughbred racetrack consists of the track itself, the grandstand, a barn area, a sales pavilion, and an equine hospital. The track is one mile long and shaped like an oval. It rests in the shadow of Mount Rainier. Unlike many horse racetracks in the U.S., which are made of dirt, the Emerald Downs track is made of geo-textile fabric, sand, single-component track material, and washed rock. The grandstand was designed by EwingCole and is a modern facility, featuring general admission on the same level as the track, as well as box and reserved seats. There's also a park where children's activities are organized for free, if the weather allows. There are plenty of food stands and beverage services, while each level has betting windows. The facility also includes a restaurant, but you have to make reservations at least two weeks in advance. The Morris J. Alhadeff Equine Hospital within the Emerald Downs thoroughbred racetrack is an amazing facility featuring all the latest technology. It has a surgery suite, recovery rooms, radiology room, prep room, isolation stall, a dark room, and office space. Racing at the Emerald Downs This thoroughbred racetrack hosts live racing events every year, starting with the middle April until the end of September. Races are held from Friday to Sunday, as well as on holidays. Numerous ungraded stakes races are run, as well as overnight stakes and handicaps. On average, 8 races are run on week nights, and 10 races during the weekend. Besides the live events, Emerald Downs also offers simulcast betting throughout the year. The first Quarter Horse race the Emerald Downs hosted was run in 2010, while a major stakes Quarter Horse race was added in 2011, namely the Bank of America Emerald Championship Challenge Stakes with a purse of $60,000. This race is held on Labor Day weekend. Emerald Downs is one of the most prestigious horse racetracks in the Northwest. Clearly the best thoroughbred racetrack in the area, the biggest race hosted here is the Longacres Mile Handicap, which is a Grade III event. In 2011, Awesome Gem won this race, but it’s no surprise as he had already made millions winning graded stakes races. In 2012, Mario Gutierrez riding I’ll Have Another became the first rider to win the Kentucky Derby and the Longacres Mile in the same year.

The Mountaineer Racetrack is More than Just a Horse Racing Track
The Mountaineer Racetrack is much more than just a horse racing track. It’s an entire complex that features a large number of slot machines, various table games, poker tables, an upscale hotel, a golf course, entertainment, and, of course, thoroughbred racing. The History of the Mountaineer Racetrack This horse racing track was inaugurated by the Charles Town Jockey Club in 1951 under the name Waterford Park. Located near Chester, West Virginia, this thoroughbred racing track took almost fourteen years to go from project to its opening. The parent company of the horse racing track was incorporated in 1937 but due to various reasons construction only began in 1948, and the thoroughbred racing track was opened May 19th, 1951. Around the middle of the 1950s, Al Boyle sold Mountaineer Racetrack to James F. Edwards, who sold the track and all his holdings to Ogden Corporation in 1969. In 1987, Bill Blair bought the track and gave it the name we know today. He then sold it to Excalibur Holding Co. in 1992. The deal was for $4 million in cash as well as stocks worth $2.7 million. In 1994, legislation was passed allowing the track to add slot machines, which marked the beginning of the casino. It was the revenue generated by the casino that permitted the Mountaineer Racetrack to grow and become a highly prestigious thoroughbred racing track. The casino now has 3,200 slot machines, 48 table games, and numerous poker tables. The Mountaineer Racetrack also has a high quality hotel, great fine dining opportunities, a golf course, a spa and plenty of entertainment. It was the additional money generated by the gambling facilities that allowed the owners of this horse racing track to expand the complex and to offer more valuable purses for the races. In turn, this attracted a larger number of horses but also better quality racers. The Mountaineer Racetrack Offers Outstanding Thoroughbred Racing Events The Mountaineer Racetrack has achieved fame in thoroughbred racing thanks to the West Virginia Derby, which is a Grade II race that receives nationwide coverage. The race has had a steep climb to fame thanks to the increase in its purse over the past decade. The Derby is traditionally held on the first Saturday in August and is the only race to be run in the afternoon at the Mountaineer Racetrack. Otherwise, all of the races are run in the evenings. So many Races The secret to the success of this horse racing track lies in the addition of the casino. Without it, it could have suffered the same fate as many other tracks that closed down due to insufficient revenue. The money made from the gambling side of the operation has made it possible for the owners to grow the importance and quality of the racing, making it one of the busiest thoroughbred racing tracks in the country, with more than 200 races scheduled every year. The Mountaineer Racetrack usually has races scheduled five nights per week starting in March and running all the way to December. Due to the owners ability to offer more valuable purses than horse racing tracks in nearby states, the Mountaineer Casino, Resort, and Racetrack has been able to attract a larger audience.

Racing Actions Returns to Santa Anita Park
December 26th, 2013 saw racing action return to Santa Anita Park. As in most recent years, the winter/spring meeting at this horse race track starts the day after Christmas. Since it opened on Christmas Day in 1934, it has been part of the landscape in Arcadia, California. With it being one of the cities in Los Angeles County, it is no wonder that the weather cooperated for the start of the winter/spring meeting on December 26th, 2013. Opening day at this horse race track included the La Brea Stakes, the Malibu Stakes and the Sir Beaufort Stakes. The La Brea Stakes was first inaugurated in 1974, and this race today has three-year-old fillies competing over a distance of just seven furlongs for a part of the USD 300,000 purse. It was won by Heir Kitty on this date. The Malibu Stakes was originally inaugurated in 1952 as the Malibu Sequet Stakes, but it has had the name of Malibu Stakes since 1958. This seven furlong horse race is contested by three-year-old horses vying for a share of the USD 300,000 purse. Shakin It Up won the Malibu Stakes on December 26th, 2013. Finally, the Sir Beaufort Stakes has three-year-old horses battling it out over a distance of one mile for a share in the USD 200,000 purse. Gervinho won the 2013 Sir Beaufort Stakes with Joseph Talamo expertly guiding the way, and his win of the race was also a win for trainer Thomas F. Proctor and owner Glen Hill Farm. Of course, these are just a few of the numerous horse races held at Santa Anita Park. Let’s look at a few more. 1935 was the year that the Santa Anita Derby, the Santa Anita Handicap and the Santa Anita Oaks were inaugurated at this horse race track. The Santa Anita Derby attracts some premiere racehorses with its USD 1,000,000 purse. In the end, three-year-old horses race over a distance of 1 1/8th miles. There are both firsts and records associated with the Santa Anita Derby. First, let’s start with firsts. Although it is not noted as a first, Pat Valenzuela became the youngest jockey to win the Santa Anita Derby when he was just 17 aboard Codex in 1980. 2000 saw JenineSahadi train the winning horse to become the first woman trainer to win this race. 2005 was the year that Jeff Mullins won the 3rd consecutive edition of the Santa Anita Derby. Let’s move onto records. Actually, there is one record specifically worthy of mentioning. There is a three-way tie of horses that finished this race in a record setting time of 1:47.00. In 1965, Lucky Debonair won the race; Sham won the 1973 Santa Anita Derby; and, Indian Charlie won it is 1998. Other winners include Goldencents in 2013 with a time of 1:48.78, and I’ll Have Another won it in 2012 with a time of 1:47.88. What will happen in 2014? The Santa Anita Handicap has four-year-old horses or older battling it out over a distance of 1 1/4th miles to have their share of the USD 750,000 purse. Perhaps, the most significant example of perseverance at the Santa Anita Handicap isSeabiscuit. He attempted to win the race in 1937 and 1938 only to lose in photo finishes. During his preparation for the 1939 Santa Anita Handicap, he suffered what many thought was a career-ending injury. In fighting spirit, he came back to race again and finally win the 1940 Santa Anita Handicap; although, it would be his last race. In 1979, Affirmed set the record time for winning the race of 1:58.60. It is still the record today. There is a four-way tie among the horses that have won the Santa Anita Handicap twice setting the record. In 1981 and 1982, John Henry won the race; in 2002 and 2003, the Santa Anita Handicap was won by Milwaukee Brew; Lava Man won it in 2006 and 2007; and, Game On Dude won the Santa Anita Derby in 2011 and 2013. Who will be the winning horse in the 2014 Santa Anita Derby?Bill Shoemaker jockeyed the winning horses a record setting eleven times. He was aboard the winning horses in 1954, 1955, 1958, 1961, 1966, 1967, 1971, 1975, 1980, 1982 and 1985. Finally, the Santa Anita Oaks was first inaugurated in 1935 as the Santa Susana Stakes, and it was a race for two-year-old horses. 1952 saw the name of the race changed to the Santa Susana Handicap only to see it change back to the Santa Susana Stakes in 1958. The final name change came in 1986 when it was changed to the Santa Anita Oaks; the name that stands today.Turbulent Descent won with a record setting time of 1:45.05 in 2011. In 2013, the race was won by Beholder, and in 2012, the Santa Anita Oaks was won by Willa B Awesome. Who will be the three-year-old filly to win the 2014 Santa Anita Oaks? With all the heart-pounding racing action back at Santa Anita Park, the possibilities to attend a horse race at this horse race track are extensive. Pick your favorite and make a visit!

Extra, Extra … Read All About Epsom Downs Racecourse
Although the official date of the first race held at Epsom Downs is 1661, it is quite possible that racing happened here much before this official date. In fact, there is an entry in the 1625 burial list that indicates William Stanley fell off his horse during the race and broke his neck resulting in his death. In 1684, this horse race track had appointed a clerk of the course. Beginning in 1730, Epsom Downs held twice yearly race meetings. In case Epsom Downs is not familiar, it is horse race track near Epsom, Surrey, England. Epsom Downs is the home of the third largest racehorse training facility in all of England. This racehorse training facility is managed by the Epsom trainers society, and eleven trainers use this facility including Laura Mongan, who is the only female trainer here. Let’s get back to the history because this horse race track has even more history to mention. The birth of the Epsom Oaks happened in the summer of 1779. Edward Smith-Stanley, 12th Earl of Derby, held a race for his three-year-old filly and those of his friends. The name came from combining the name of the race course, Epsom, with the name of his estate, the Oaks. After the success of the Epsom Oaks, it was determined that a new race should be added for colts and fillies; hence, the start of the Epsom Derby. Moving onto the 20th Century, Epsom Downs was the site of where in 1913 suffragette Emily Davison threw herself in front of King George V’s horse Anmercausing him to fall.Because of this, Emily Davison was severely injured and succumbed to her injuries four days later. The 1952 Epsom Derby became the inspiration for the 1952 film Derby Day. Epsom Downs was included extensively in the movie. In the 21st Century, Epsom Downs had a few noteworthy events. First, 2009 saw the opening of the new Duchess’s Stand at the race course. It can accommodate 11,000 people, and banqueting, conferences and exhibitions can be held in the 960 square meter (10,000 square foot) hall. Willmott Dixon built this new stand for an estimated cost of £23.5 million. After their honeymoon in the Seychelles, Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, his wife, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Harry and Catherine’s parents stepped out in their first public appearance at the 2011 Epsom Derby on June 4th. Actually, we should learn a little about some of the significant races held at this horse race track. As mentioned previously, the Epsom Derby and Epsom Oaks happen here. The Epsom Derby happens annually in early June. This grade 1 flat horse race is open to three-year-old colts and fillies; however, geldings cannot enter the race. It is considered Great Britain’s richest horse race with a 2012 purse of £1,325,000, and it is the most prestigious horse race of the five Classics in Great Britain. In 2013, the Epsom Derby was won by Ruler of the World, and Camelot won the race in 2012. Both were trained by Aidan O’Brien. Open only to three-year-old fillies, the Epsom Oaks also takes place in early June every year. It is the third of the five Classics in Great Britain, and it is often the second leg of the Fillies Triple Crown. In 2013, Talent won the Epsom Oaks; while, in 2012 Was won the race for trainer Aidan O’Brien. Frank Buckle jockeyed nine of the winning horses from 1797 through 1823, and Robert Robson trained thirteen of the winning horses from 1802 through 1825. Additionally, the Coronation Cup is held here. This horse race was first inaugurated in 1902 to celebrate the coronation of a new king. Every year this horse race takes place in June, and it is open to four-year-old horses or more. In 2012, they competed for a share of the £300,000 purse. In fact, the 2011, 2012 and 2013 Coronation Cup was won by St Nicholas Abbey who was trained by none other than Aiden O’Brien. With its rich history and thrilling present day horse races, it is no wonder that Epsom Downs is one of the premiere horse race tracks in England and may even throughout Europe. If you ever get the opportunity to attend a horse race here, you are in for a treat and that too at a historic venue.

Mr. Prospector Stakes at Gulfstream Park
Among the race tracks from coast to coast in the United States, Florida cannot be forgotten. It is home to a few different horse race tracks, but the most well-known is probably Gulfstream Park. Initially, this venue was inaugurated in 1939, and a crowd of 18,000 was in attendance on the first day. During this time, a four-day meet took place in February of that year. In December of 1944, Gulfstream Park was re-opened for a 20-day meet. Currently, their annual meet takes place between December and April, and it becomes one of the most important race tracks in the sport of horse racing in the United States. The Mr. Prospector Stakes is just one of the many horse races held at Gulfstream Park. 2013 will mark the 61st running of this horse race with a USD 100,000 purse. This Grade 3 event was inaugurated back in 1946 and is contested by three-year-old horses or older. The December 28th, 2013 horse race will finally become a field of 14; however, there are 21 horses nominated for the race. They are, in alphabetical order: • ACTION ANDY • APRIORITY • BLACK DIAMOND CAT • CITY OF WESTON • CLOSE IT OUT • FALLING SKY • FORT LOUDON • GHOST IS CLEAR • GRANDE SHORES • HARBOR BREEZE • JACKSON BEND • POSITIVELY • RIBO BOBO • SIMMSTOWN • SINGANOTHERSONG • STAR HARBOUR • STAT • THE LUMBER GUY • TIGHTEND TOUCHDOWN • TRAVELIN MAN • UPGRADE I might be a tad bit biased with STAT and TRAVELIN MAN because they are trained by Todd Pletcher so if they make it to the final field of 14 my money will be on them. Some of the other races that are held at Gulfstream Park include: Grade 1 races: • Donn Handicap - This race was inaugurated in 1959, and it is contested by four-year-old horses or older over a distance of 1 1/8th miles on a dirt track with the goal of a share in the USD 500,000 purse. • Florida Derby – This premiere event was inaugurated in 1952. Three-year-old horses race over a distance of 1 1/8th miles for their part of the hefty USD 1,000,000 purse. • Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap – It is one of the ‘newer’ races having been inaugurated in 1986. Four-year-old horses or older compete each year over 1 1/8th miles on a turf track for their share of the USD 300,000 purse. Grade 2 races: • Fountain of Youth Stakes – This Grade 2 event takes place each year in February. Beginning as an Endurance Rider
Taking place on a variety of challenging terrains, endurance horse racing can have races anywhere between 25 and 150 miles and last anywhere from one to three days.  These races are not for the faint of heart, but there are some helpful suggestions for beginning endurance riders as it pertains to horses.   First is the selection of the horse.  Most horses can be trained for endurance racing; however, Arabians tend to be the most chosen and successful breed of horse for endurance racing.  When picking a horse, choose a well-muscled horse that is sturdy and solid with the heart and endurance for riding long distances.  Along with the muscular body, a horse with a little extra weight may not be problematic for an endurance racer.  Always keep in mind those that may be able to help you including veterinarians and even a trusted farrier.  Not only can they help with the selection of the horse, but they may also provide invaluable suggestions on keeping a horse in top condition including nutritional supplements to prepare a horse for an endurance race.   The second tip may seem like it is common sense, but it is not common sense for everyone.  Start by training your selected horse at shorter distances with less speed then increase the distance and speed slowly to help the horse adjust and develop a horse’s power and determination.  With a horse new to endurance racing, a minimum 12-week training program is suggested by seasoned endurance riders; however, longer the training programs are even better.  In fact, some endurance riders take a year or more to get their horse ready for endurance racing.   The terrains can vary for endurance races; thus, the horse should be trained and ridden on all types of terrains.  In fact, the horses must learn to go up and down hills, through water, across fields, into woods and even travel along busy highways without missing a beat.  Hand-in-hand with the selection of the horse is the need for a horse to have muscle strength, suppleness and drive to excel at all terrains especially while climbing up and down a steep terrain.  This is the third tip. Fourth, you want to train the horse to be unfazed by obstacles during an endurance race.  As the trails can be anywhere, the obstacles that are encountered can be anything including fallen logs, mud and water.  While selecting the terrains on which to train a horse, try to include some unplanned obstacles so that you can teach the horse not to become spooked and pass them by or even go through them without a second thought. Fifth, most of the training so far has been solely with your horse alone; however, it is now time to train your horse to manage racing in large groups.  In fact, the start of an endurance race can be overwhelming to some horses especially since the large group at the beginning of a race is likely to include unfamiliar horses crowding around your horse.  Thus, it is highly suggested that a horse encounters this and is able to overcome it with coaxing and training on various trails. Finally, make sure your horse and yourself are properly rested and recovered from an endurance race before entering the next one.  This can be the difference between success and failure in an endurance race. The health and safety of the horse is paramount in an endurance horse racing; thus, before, during and after an endurance race, the horse undergoes veterinary evaluation.  At any point of time, the horse can be found unfit to continue the race, and the horse and rider are asked to stop the race at that point.   Many endurance races are considered challenging if not grueling so any horse and rider team that completes an endurance race tends to be recognized just for that accomplishment.  For example, horse and rider teams that complete the 100-mile Tevis Cup within the 24-hour limit are eligible for a silver Completion Award Buckle if the horse is deemed “fit to continue.” Endurance horse racing is definitely not for everyone; however, with the right practice and training, horses can surely compete in endurance races.  This absolutely applies to riders too because they too need to be in peak physical condition along with stamina and determination.  Practice and train your way into an endurance race!

The Evolution of Computer Games
In the busy schedule of today, every person wants some recreation.  Although there are many options available, most people prefer relaxing at home watching television or movies or playing computer games or video games.  Computer games are now seen in every second house these days as they are one of the most popular and widespread means of recreation.  These are basically video games played on personal computers; hence, the name PC games. The computer was originally created to make the calculations easier, but over time they became more powerful and flexible, and computers were capable of performing many tasks.  Among the many developments that took place, the incorporation of graphic cards, increased memory, better performance and sound and much more resulted in a thrilling game playing experience on computers. Looking back at the history of computer games, these games existed on mainframe and minicomputers even before the personal computers became popular.  The first game OXO debuted in the year 1952 and was an adaption of tic-tac-toe.  In the year 1961, a game named Spacewar developed by MIT students was used on mainframe computers for statistical calculations.  The initial games were more text related or the interactive style as the player had to feed the computer with the commands through the keyboard.  By 1980s, personal computers were powerful enough and graphics were becoming a crucial part of the gaming industry.  As the computers were catching up with people and in the market, the console and the video game market crashed. The increased usage of the mouse, success of the game like the King’s Quest series and the higher resolution displays gave the leverage to include high-quality graphics in new editions. Further improvements in the gaming area took place with the introduction of FM synthesis sound.  There were games that took advantage of the advanced technologies and used the 3D graphics.  Some of those games were Doom and Myst which included features like sound, graphics and video combined together giving players a richer gaming experience. The 3D collections had gained acceptance in the market by demonstrating the benefits through the game Unreal.  As, Microsoft Windows, the market leader at that time had undergone major changes.  Thus, many MS-DOS games couldn’t be played on it. The graphic accelerator and improving technology demanded realism in games.   Today, a player can opt for a system with inbuilt features and software to elevate the gaming experience.  Most of the systems have a graphic card with a dedicated video RAM.  One PC can have multiple Graphic Processing Units using technologies like NVidia and ATI.  The sound cards provide with a better sound quality and 3D audio. Another gaming area very popular is the online game section which came into existence because of the usage of broadband. This allows players from all around the globe to play together. Though there are games for every person and even animal lovers have choices.  The people intrigued with horse racing and all its many facets definitely have an attraction to certain online games.  In fact, the more realistic the game is the more attraction.  3D virtual horse racing games are in demand, and Horse Racing Fantasy developed by Horse Racing Simulation LLC is a 3D virtual horse racing game like no other.  Whether you dream of being a horse breeder, owner, trainer or jockey, it is all within your reach.  Plus, for those that want to enhance their betting skills that is possible too.

History of horse racing in Ohio
Horse racing in Ohio owes it to Cleveland for its controversial history that commenced with the settlers of the Western Reserve.  When betting was being considered as an integral part of horse racing around the world – Greater Cleveland was associated with illegal gambling and crime. In 1863 few Clevelanders who were true horse racing lovers organized an exclusive Cleveland Driving Club and purchased a tract for their horses to race on to exclude themselves from the dubious reputation that it had so gained. In 1933 when betting was legalized the State of Ohio partnered with Tax Collection enterprise on gross betting at the respective tracks to keep together the business running in a viable way along with track owners. In the 1870’s the Central Trotting Circuit or the Grand Circuit was formed that scheduled yearly meets held at the member cities for a 7 weeks season at Glenville Race Track. The Horse Racing Game was being recognized as an important and exciting sport with the regularization of the betting scenario in the year 1920’s.  Once betting was legalized they seemed to prefer the strength and speed of the thoroughbred over harness racing – this resulted in the first running of the Ohio Derby organized at Maple Heights track in 1924. This was won by Black Gold. In 1925 the Thistledown Race Track became one of the major race tracks in Greater Cleveland. In 1957 The Northfield Park was established at the edge of Cuyahoga County and was famous for its Harness racing. Thistledown and Northfield Park both dominated horse racing post World War II when the entire industry was facing a melt-down due to the rising competition for entertainment dollar from other sports.  Finally with off-track betting being legalized in 7 of the tracks, horse racing seemed to sustain itself in Ohio. Later in 1923, the first thoroughbred race track was established - Beulah Park. Currently there are three thoroughbred race tracks and four harness tracks in the state. Thoroughbred Breed Classification of races
A Thoroughbred breed of race horses is a pure breed which should not be used in generic sense. A Thoroughbred breed of race horses is considered “hot-blooded” horses, known for their agility, speed and spirit. In the world’s major Thoroughbred racing countries, breeding of racehorses is a big industry that gives jobs to a large number of people. Thoroughbred horse racing is a worldwide sport and industry that involves racing of Thoroughbred race horses. It is governed by their own regulatory agency in each country which is free to set own standards that can result in difference in racing quality. The complete horse racing experience of commanding, making rules with Thoroughbred race horses can be had at www.horseracegame.com in simulation. The Thoroughbred of horse racing is broadly divided in to two categories namely Flat Racing and National Hunt Racing. National Hunt Racing can be further divided in to hurdling and steeple-chasing. Let’s first talk about Flat Racing which can be run at varying distances and on different terms. Historically major Flat racing countries have been United States, Australia and many countries in Europe where racing horse games have been happening either on turf or dirt or lately on artificial surfaces like Polytrack.  National Hunt racing which are mainly run in Great Britain and Ireland are run over long distances and characterized by the heavy weight that the horses carry. Jump Racing and steeplechasing are National Hunt Races where the horses jump over hurdles, obstacles that are over three and a half feet high.  Hurdling and steeplechasing do not differ much except that the best hurdling horses go for steeplechasing when they are older.       Horse Racing is categorized in classes depending on the popularity and the past performances of winning horses. The bottom most on the ladder is the Maiden race which is a breaking race for a horse to enter a higher category. The breaking race can happen in any race which usually happens in a maiden race or for an exceptional horse it can happen in an allowance or an allowance stakes. A claiming race is one in which the horses are all for sale for more or less the same price (the “claiming price”) up until shortly before the race. This can be categorized further based on the price of horses in them. The next to know are Allowances Races, the name comes from the fact that the races have set conditions and weights to carry with weight allowed off for meeting various other conditions. Typically these races are for non-winners of certain number of races except maiden, allowance or starter. The most important and highly accredited are the Stakes Races where the top horses race.  These have the highest purses although the amount can vary from small track to a major track and carry most prestige on winning.

Some Tips at to race at Del Mar
It’s very interesting to know the foundation of the Del Mar racetrack, the recount how horse racing game spread to all classes in the social ladder in the state of California and a Constitution Amendment that was passed which prohibited alcohol in racing moved the sport to the border state of Mexico but welcomed back to United States as a means of promoting agriculture in county fairs if gambling on horses was made legal. This led California State in 1933 to pass a Proposition that provided for the encouragement of agriculture and breeding of horses. This led to horse racetracks being sprung up across the state, and during this time found a suitable site at Del Mar for the San Diego County Fair and the facility was constructed. In 1936 William A. Quigley and Bing Crosby did the necessary and found the Del Mar Turf Club and in 1937 the Del Mar Race Track along with Paramount Studios and other Hollywood insiders. The horse racing season kicks off in July and goes on till September offering a large variety of races for the race enthusiast. A day or few days at a racetrack like Del Mar can be fulfilling if one knows about the place. A trip to San Diego during the racing season can be combined with Del Mar Racetrack for a fun, inexpensive place to spend some time. One of the most enjoyable aspects of being at the horse races at Del Mar is to see the events unfold beautifully like meticulous track preparations, jockeys getting ready and parading to the grounds etc. A little know- how about the place can make the experience more enjoyable and fulfilling. The seating in to the general admission areas is without reservation on most days, but it’s needed for best boxes, reserved seats and dining locations any time. It is advisable to choose the seating area that gives a better view even if it comes with a price. Another add-on to the Del Mar horse racing game experience are the live concert that happen every Friday and some Saturday. There are betting tips also which should be taken from an experienced person who has been to the races several times. All the Del Mar racing experience can also be had from our couch at www.horseracegame.com which is a complete horse gaming experience with high quality graphics.
