Let’s talk about Women’s Baseball!

Hello! Are you newly interested in girls, women, and other non-men playing baseball because you just finished A League of Their Own (2022)? Did you know that there’s girls, women, and other non-men currently playing baseball all over North America, and not just during World War II?

Allow me to introduce you to Baseball For All, the organization doing concrete, boots-on-the-ground work to further the sport of Women’s Baseball (inclusively) in North America, and it’s founder, Justine Siegal. Siegal founded Baseball for All because she had played, on boys’ teams, all the way up through high school. She turned down a soccer scholarship to go to a college that had a no-cut baseball team, so she could keep playing, but when she got there, they still cut her. (Deadspin) That ended her baseball career, but through her organizing, she’s provided opportunities for the women who came after her, who play on the US and Canadian Women’s National Baseball Teams, on college teams across the continent, and many of whom were baseball consultants or played as members of the other teams on A League of Their Own. Siegal was the show’s main baseball consultant, and Baseball For All players and alumnae trained the actors in baseball skills. 

If you want to help Baseball For All grow the game of baseball, you can donate to them directly. You can also volunteer with them lots of different ways, including things like administrative support. Give the girls, women, and non-binary people playing today the support the characters in A League of Their Own didn’t have, the kind of support that boys (especially white boys) in North America get without having to ask.
