The Lady of Ampato
Introduction
The picture above is that of an unidentified girl who was killed as an offering to the Inca gods. It is not known when this happened, but it is approximately between 1450-1480. The girl, who was between 12 and 15 years old, is called Mummy Juanita and/or Lady of Ampato. This is her story.
Who was the Lady of Ampato?
Since the girl has never been identified, we can not know for certain who she was as a person, but several indicators can make us make a few probable guesses. It is widely believed that the Lady of Ampato was from a noble family since her clothes were of high quality and probably came from the capital city. However, one thing that speaks against this is the food the Lady of Ampato had consumed before her death. She had eaten vegetables, which leads many to believe that she was not from a wealthy since it was much more common that the noble families ate meat, which was a luxury at the time. Regarding the Lady of Ampato’s ethnicity, her genetics has shown connections to Taiwan and Korea.
How did she die and why?
The Lady of Ampato’s cause of death was blunt head trauma. The blow to her head resulted in massive blood loss as well as blood being clogged in her head, which resulted in her brain being pushed to the left of her head. The Lady of Ampato was likely sacrificed to the gods in the hopes that volcanic eruptions would stop. It was quite common that children were sacrificed since they were believed to be a worthy gift to the gods because of their purity.
The discovery
The body of the Lady of Ampato was found by explorer Johan Reinhard in 1995 in a crater on the stratovolcano Ampato. The body was frozen and well preserved and was quickly transported to Arequipa where it was placed in a freezer. The Lady of Ampato is now exhibited at the Museum of Andean Sanctuaries at the Catholic University of Santa Maria.

The Haraldskær Woman is a bog body of a woman who was discovered in Jutland, Denmark, dating from around 490 BCE. Not only was the body in excellent preservation, but so was the internal organs. As most bog bodies that have been recovered indicate that they died from murder of even sacrifice, it’s believed that she was killed in the same manner - she had a grove in her neck as if a rope had been tied around it. She was naked when discovered but her clothes, which consisted of a leather cape and various woollen garments, were placed on top of her.

On June 29, 1967 actress Jayne Mansfield and two other adult passengers were instantly killed when the 1966 Buick Electra they were travelling in collided head on with a low slung tractor-trailer. When police inspected the wrecked car they noticed Mansfield slumped in her chair, face and frontal cortex exposed to the skull. Parts of her wig with bits of her scalp attached were recovered from the floor and road. Three children asleep in the back of the car survived with minor injuries.
Mansfield was one of the original ‘blonde bombshells’ of the 1950’s and was considered, alongside Marilyn Monroe, as the embodiment of feminine charm and sensuality. In her later years it was rumored that she joined the infamous Church of Satan, and was indeed close friends with its founder Anton LaVey.

Jeffrey Dahmer was not a well-liked child.  He had significant difficulty approaching other children and interacting with them, a problem that was exacerbated by his family’s frequent moves in his early life.  In a baby book that she used to track Jeff’s development, his mother Joyce Flint fretted over how distressed her son became over going to preschool, often bursting into tears at the time they were supposed to leave.  The young boy was rigidly shy and introverted.  On one occasion, a teacher expressed concern about his inability to get along with the other children in his class.  She noted that at recess, Jeff would roam the playground, on the outskirts of the other children’s playing, and that in class, he did not respond when others approached him.  The problem, she explained, was not that Jeff was relating aggressively to other students, causing trouble and bullying; the problem was that he did not relate to other students at all.  Jeff’s parents worked to ameliorate the situation by placing him in various extracurricular activities in the hope that being around other children would push him out of his shell.  Unfortunately, this seemed to have little effect, as Jeff quickly lost interest in all of the activities.
Despite his social deficits, Jeff remarkably managed to build a small coterie of friends, who would later state to news reporters that they knew he was “a weird kid,” but interesting to be around.  These friends sometimes accompanied him in pursuing his one enduring interest: canvassing the woods and country roads in search of roadkill.  All the neighborhood children were aware of Jeff’s “Hut,” an old tool shed where he stored his collection of animal remains that he dissolved in jars of chemicals.  When Jeff entered middle school, a story circulated about how how he had once angrily broken a jar that contained the rotting flesh of a raccoon against the floor in front of a group of kids, and the stench was so terrible that they vomited.  Other rumors detailing his bizarre tendencies branded him as a strange and unpredictable outcast, a role which he retained for his entire life.
