I wanna add this that as someone who has worked with addicts and recovery programs for about 10 plus years that him getting immediate and then long term help is the best possible thing right now.
It is always what addicts struggle the most with, even more than the actual recovery in some ways because having someone who is using realize they need help is so difficult. If you've never used heavy narcotics let me just say (from personal experience) that it's like living in a dream world with no pain and no trauma. So giving that up? To face that buried pain again as well as how tough and often horrible the world is? That takes so much not just strength but also HOPE because you know on some level it's not all horrible and that life can be good.
I've seen many people who just do not have the strength to do it, so him knowing this is something that he needs and getting it, well, as I have seen many times in the past decade, is something I am so proud of him for and such an amazing indicator of exactly how strong he is.
I'm not going to speculate on how his addiction has affected his mental health and how he's gotten to the point of being institutionalized and what exactly that means. But no matter what him being somewhere safe and supervised is exactly where he should be and that is something that should bring us all a lot of relief.
