HMS Illustrious Hearing The Sounds of The Sea
Tumblr media
HMS Illustrious was a lightweight warship of the Royal Navy and also the second of three Invincible-class ships created within the late 1970s and early 1980s. She was the fifth ship and the second warship to have the name Illustrious and was known to the crew as "Lusty". In 1982, the conflict within the Falklands necessitated that Illustrious be completed and hurried south to hitch her sister ship HMS Invincible and also the veteran carrier HMS Hermes. She was brought forward by 3 months for completion at Swan Hunter shipyard, then commissioned on June 20th, 1982 at sea en-route to Portsmouth waterfront for onboard stores and crew. She arrived within the Falklands to alleviate HMS Invincible on August 18th, 1982. Returning to the UK, she wasn't formally commissioned into the fleet until March 20th, 1983. She was deployed on Operation Southern Watch in the Asian nation, then Operation Deny Flight in the European nation throughout the 90's and Operation Palliser in Republic of Sierra Leone in 2000. An in-depth re-fit throughout 2002 prevented her from involvement in the 2003 Asian nation War, however, she was repaired in time to help British voters cornered by the 2006 Lebanese Republic War.

Alraigo incident
Whilst operating from HMS Illustrious it caused an international incident on May 6, 1983 when pilot Lt I. ‘Soapy’ Watson landed the aircraft on a Spanish freighter Alraigo after an avionics malfunctions left him without contact with the carrier. The landing area used on the Alraigo freighter was the base plate for a telescope that was being shipped to the La Palma Observatory in the Canary Islands. The aircraft did partially slip off its temporary landing platform onto some containers and was eventually off-loaded from the Alraigo at Santa Cruz in Tenerife and was returned to the UK on the MV British Tay.
Sea Harrier ZA176 was converted to the FA2 variant in 1992 and retired from service September 20, 2003. The aircraft is now on display at Newark Air Museum in Nottinghamshire England in its FA2 configuration
