Serving as a creative director for @melangemovement on their first ever NYFW runway show, “This is Normal,” has undoubtedly been one of the greatest opportunities of my young life. So often in this life, we are labelled and cast away because of the way we look, the way we talk, and the clothes we wear. To be honest, the social anxiety of how we think we ought to look or behave in order to be accepted by others has never been so overwhelming as it is today. The good news following this sad truth is that although anxiety has heightened in recent years, so has our opportunity to raise awareness and strategise on how we may effectively overcome it. Melange exists in the awareness that prominent figures and organisations have long dictated the societal view of what is acceptable and good, both in terms of the garments being made as well as the people who get to wear them. As a challenge to those figures and organisations, and even unto ourselves, the platform of the Melange Movement was built to raise the standard and free the oppressed. What does that look like, you ask? Great question. Success in this movement looks like people coming together from all walks of life. It’s a congregation of individuals assembling to form a community of masters and students, thick and thin, young and old, short and tall, black and white and every colour in between. Regardless of where you stand on the spectrum of gender identity, religious affiliation, social status, medical condition or sexual orientation, the success of the Melange Movement looks like all of us, living together, celebrating the beauty of radical self-love and diversity. We did not come here to fight, we came here to slay, because this beauty that you see here is not an anomaly.
