I think matpat was most people's first introduction to the idea of the mario series having a consistent story or lore. I may not personally think matpat was exactly reputable (one of his only reasonable theories was directly plagarized from someone else), but most people on the internet seem to have some level of faith in his analysis. outside of the gross pseudoscience garbage, most people probably only think critically about his videos when they challenge something they think. since so many people don't really care about (or have any knowledge of) the story elements of mario games, they won't feel a need to question the theory.
