When I was reading Rousseau for a course I didn't agree with much he said, except that the fundamental feature of all humans is compassion.

There is no reason we should care about the life of a species other than own. Yet we care about seals and otters because they are cute, and many of us go out of our way to release spiders outside our homes. Some of us even choose to eat only plants (Not me, but I do save spiders).

An octopus while intelligent does not care about a scallop. A snake does not concern itself with a dinner possibly still writhing inside its own body.

Yet we care. We really don't need to, but we do.

We care about everything.

Me: Why does Astarion always disapprove when I do something to try and help out victims of slavery or when I do things specifically to uplift people who are victimised by groups and people more powerful than them? You'd think of ANYONE he'd be the guy most in favour of that sort of thing.

The little fairy that lives in my head and talks to me sometimes: It's because you are challenging his warped worldview that only the strong have power and without power you can only be a victim and you are stressing him out by showing him his perspective forged out of decades of abuse of every kind is incorrect and it's making him question if, maybe, how he was treated was unfair and avoidable.

I don't really ship Lae'zel and Gale but learning magic from him is legitimately cute, as is staying up to watch the stars (and may wonder if those same stars shine in the Astral plane) while Gale talks about going out in a blaze of glory for a deity they love.

Y'all, the world is sleeping on what NASA just pulled off with Voyager 1

The probe has been sending gibberish science data back to Earth, and scientists feared it was just the probe finally dying. You know, after working for 50 GODDAMN YEARS and LEAVING THE GODDAMN SOLAR SYSTEM and STILL CHURNING OUT GODDAMN DATA.

So they analyzed the gibberish and realized that in it was a total readout of EVERYTHING ON THE PROBE. Data, the programming, hardware specs and status, everything. They realized that one of the chips was malfunctioning.

So what do you do when your probe is 22 Billion km away and needs a fix? Why, you just REPROGRAM THAT ENTIRE GODDAMN THING. Told it to avoid the bad chip, store the data elsewhere.

Sent the new code on April 18th. Got a response on April 20th - yeah, it's so far away that it took that long just to transmit.

And the probe is working again.

From a programmer's perspective, that may be the most fucking impressive thing I have ever heard.
