I miss the days of ND games when Nancy’s responses could actually differ in tone and meaning. here our options are:
“Hey! I’m Nancy Drew: girl detective :) I have enough money from my dad and my mother’s trust account to never have to worry about the problems the rest of you have, so here are some kind words to tell you that all will be fine in the end.”
versus
“dear God we are royally FUCKED!!!!”

Try my new demo - Prose & Codes!
Tumblr media
I've been working on a new game for the past three months, and I'm super excited to get feedback from the clue crew on the FREE demo version! If you liked decoding the journal in Ransom of the Seven Ships, I think you'll like this game!
Prose & Codes invites you to explore the wonderful world of books through deceptively simple substitution ciphers. The demo includes 49 encoded excerpts from literary classics across 7 unique genres (including mystery novels)!
Tumblr media
Like what you decoded? You can add excerpts to your favorites and read spoiler-free synopses--plus, every single book featured in the game can be read online COMPLETELY FREE, direct links included!
This is a demo/beta version of the game for Windows (Mac demo coming soon), and there's a development list on the itch.io page that goes over some of the improvements that will be made for the final version. However, I'm all ears for any other improvements you think I should make!
When the game is complete and ready to sell, a portion of all proceeds will go to Project Gutenburg, an amazing online library of free ebooks!
If you give Prose & Codes a try, please let me know what you think--good or bad (bug reports are especially welcome)! You can post on the itch.io page, email me at [email protected], or even anonymously message me here on tumblr!
NOTE: The itch.io page is private for now, so Prose & Codes will not show up if you search for the game. Direct link: https://herogameco.itch.io/proseandcodes?password=ciphers

It’s actually kind of sad just how empty the newer games are, like the designs and settings are nice enough, sure, but there’s nothing to look at? In comparison to say STFD, where there’s SO MUCH to look at, clue after clue and red herring after red herring, there’s clutter and junk and little details that these places have been used and lived in and are really part of the mystery but also not part of the mystery, not staged or clean or overly obvious or lonely... point is, there’s stuff. Like Minette, I want stuff! That’s just like this old stuff but different. I’m exploring Nancy’s House in ASH and there’s barely anything to explore; the vanity and desk are pure decoration, there’s a very obviously placed paper on the coffee table all by its lonesome, there’s one openable drawer with one readable note and it’s just... not the same. It feels so deliberate and hollow and false like it’s directing you over here pick me pick me I’m right in your line of sight surrounded by not one other thing instead of letting you dig through and click on everything yourself.

Explain a Nancy Drew Game to me without telling me the title.
I’ll go first:
Toasted lettuce sandwiches
Parent Trap
Henry Bolet’s soulmate cello-ing on a forever loop
Spider monkey climbing up a tree after a squirrel
A bunch of reject A’s from Pretty Little Liars meets under tree at the witching hour
Gossip Girl here, your one and only source for the scandalous life of boarding school’s elite. XOXO

It is not likely I will make a mug for every Nancy Drew game I okay as I go through them, but I felt like making this one based on Stay Tuned for Danger.
You can see my reflection because I have one, unlike some people we know.
