when they ask
When they ask you how you are
don’t say fearful. Narrow your eyes
and kiss your teeth but don’t say
afraid.
Don’t say more scared than
ever before, or floundering.
Don’t say lost without
cause or that you’re not always sure
you can make it.
Straighten that back
you are sex. Look like sex.
Wipe the blood from yourself.
Don’t tell them what went on when
the sun was busy in another street.
Do that Thing The People Do.
The people who are fine, fine, fine
until you get home and find them
gone, gone, gone.
Keep suffering because it’s your God-
Given Right.
Brawl with your being. Fight the bad
fight.
Fight.
If they ask you how you are
don’t say stolen. Don’t say forgotten,
passed over,
ignored. Don’t you dare say Orphan.
Don’t say beaten by the system
oppressed and disturbed
and don’t you dare say disappointed
don’t you dare say damaged.
Smile.
Smile with all of your teeth, even the
rotting ones.
Even the rotting ones.

“I know I’m not easy to love. I’m a chronic over-thinker. I overreact more than I should…And every once in a while, I might be a little insecure. But if I am in love with you, I can promise you wholeheartedly that you will be loved with so much passion and intensity that you’ll forget what life felt like before I came along. You will always be cared for and you will always have someone in your corner. Maybe I’m not the best at being loved - But I like to think I’m pretty good at loving.”

I want your Monday morning
sleep soaked eyes
dream drenched voice,
lazy bones
‘five more minutes please babe.’
I want your Tuesday afternoon
coffee break,
glasses off, laughter on
‘just hold me for a while
it’s been a hard day.’
I want your Wednesday evening
fingers through hair
teeth nibbling nails
neck craning, eye glazing
‘this paperwork never ends’
I want your Thursday night
drinks for two
bones unbind
muscles let loose
flats, slacks,
‘just me and you’
I want your finally Friday
stretch soul smile,
sun sipping light
from the glaciers in your eyes
fingers unfurl, hand extends
‘c’mon babe, lets go wild’
I want your weekend.
your movie marathon Saturday
reading by the fireplace
kissing in the blankets
want your Sunday morning
orange juice and pancakes
white sheets, tender skin
hair like the Fourth of July
‘let’s not get out of bed today.’
I want your ordinary
and your stress, rest, release
I want your bad day and that terrible night
I want you drunk in my arms
forgetting the place but never my name
I want your lazy and your lonely
and your fist full of fight
I want you everyday
in every way
for the rest of my life.

Questions Women In Healing Have To Ask Themselves About Lovers
1. Am I seeking this partner from a healthy place or an empty place?
2. Does this person resemble my abuser? My parents? My family patterns?
3. Is my partner safe?
4. Does my partner understand, seek to understand and acknowledge my trauma? Does he/she/they want to explore my childhood?
5. Does my partner retreat or show up when I want to talk about my trauma or healing?
6. Does my partner have patience for the days when trauma wins? Anxiety wins? Insecurity wins?
7. Am I getting my needs met through manipulation of my partner or from their true behaviors?
8. Is there chaos here?
9. Does my partner treat my healing seriously and with respect?
10. Does my partner give me space to do the things that I do to heal?

“Live the life you’d be envious of if you saw someone else living it. This is my personal mantra. Whenever I’m going through a difficult time, like a breakup, and I’m wishing to be the person who could get over it and move on, I tell myself to be that person. Instead of waiting to be inspired by someone else and being jealous that they’re living a life I wish I had, I tell myself not to wait for that moment and to start being the person I want to be.”
