mr.sunshine: the tender, yet tragic brush of fate

Six episodes in, and we break out one of the most quietly heartbreaking scenes out of Mr. Sunshine so far. There is so, so much to unpack here (the literature nerd in me cannot be silenced). And if you’re not listening or looking carefully, you might be missing out what is being whispered throughout this whole entire scene. In this succinct, yet powerful scene, we essentially see how the relationship between Ae Shin and Dong Mae is—and how it will be. As Ae Shin’s red chima (dress) brushes against the backs of his fingers, it is a  moment that represents the past, the present, and the very future. If someone asked me to explain foreshadowing, I would simply show them this scene.  Everything about it just screams tragedy. And we all know that it’s going to be more tragic for Dong Mae than Ae Shin.

Ae Shin: What do you think you’re doing?

Dong Mae: Nothing. It’s just… there. Do you know why I returned to Joseon? Just that one time. Just because of that one moment. Even if I turn my back a hundred times, there is just this one path, my lady.

Why don’t we just STAB me in the heart?

Despite how little we see of Dong Mae, I feel like we know volumes about him already. So much of him can be understood through the short moments we are allowed to glimpse at him. One scene of his past easily explains the result of who and what he is today—a man who is shaped by his instincts, shaped by his need to survive in a world that showed him nothing but cruelty. A man who is full of scars from his childhood, from how people treated him due to his lowly status as a baekjeong (butcher/an untouchable; in the Joseon period, butchers  were considered to be the lowest out of all the classes, even being classified below the slaves). A man whose emotions run so intense, a man who speaks the language of rage and violence. Every interaction with Ae Shin is undercurrent with some deeper emotion, possibly bitterness and anger, or possibly his love for Ae Shin—or both at the same time.

All of the three men in Ae Shin’s life represent a different facet of the Joseon/Korean society at that time. Both Eugene Choi and Dong Mae are born in the lower classes, but Eugene ends up in a much different situation than Dong Mae as adults. They are both free men (only possible through Joseon’s crumbling empire as outside forces began to colonize it, and thus disrupting the societal structure that had in place for centuries) in their own ways, but Eugene chose to go to America and is now an enlisted member of the American army. They’re both Joseon men who have not chosen their homeland—Dong Mae’s close ties with the Japanese, Eugene with America respectively. And then we have Ae Shin’s fiancé, Kim Hee Sung, who represents the last remnants of Joseon’s noble class. He is educated and privileged, a stark contrast to Eugene and Dong Mae. Hee Sung is the least high-strung and intense out of all of them, being born with the luxury of not having to worry about his life not being endangered. As my mother put it, Hee Sung represents some sort of lumpenproletariat—he lacks awareness of class because he has been at the top for his entire life. He lacks awareness of how difficult life is for those who do not have the same privileges as him. Interestingly enough, these three men may not be on the same page as Ae Shin, who is devoted to Joseon and wishes to fight for her country. (Oooh, does anyone smell tension? Jk, it’s already happened). 

But I digress back to Dong Mae.

The moment that Dong Mae grasps—and holds onto—Ae Shin’s dress, it is meant to obviously evoke and parallel against the memory of their shared past. Ae Shin once saved Dong Mae’s life when he was being hunted down, hiding him away in her carriage and helping him to escape. It is the moment that Dong Mae and Ae Shin’s red thread is tied. The moment he grasps onto her dress, it is the same action that he did many years ago as a child, brushing the luxurious silk of her dress against his lip to wipe off blood. 

While for some individuals, the red dress can be read as sensual or erotic, I personally wouldn’t read it as being sexual, because for me, there are other intense emotions that are overwhelming to me in this very moment. 

Like I stated previously, Dong Mae’s emotions are pretty intense (I would argue that he feels very deeply despite his cool exterior; what a classic tsundere)—to the point where they evoke fear to others. Although we as an audience may know that Dong Mae doesn’t mean to cause harm to Ae Shin per se, I think Ae Shin’s fear is very present throughout this whole scene. She doesn’t know what he feels for her (he loves you and if he doesn’t love you right now, it’s obvious he’s going to fall in love with you), and she doesn’t know where he’s going to jump next. While Ae Shin often puts on a strong front, she has seen what Dong Mae can do and she knows that he can kill people in cold blood. And the fear she feels now, it is the same fear that she experienced when she rescued him. She’d done it innocently, as an act to save someone because his life was important to her (she would have done it for anybody). But the moment young Dong Mae spit out to her, “you’re nothing but a noble fool,” it was the moment when Ae Shin begins to fear, and second-guesses her decision to save him. It’s no different now, even if they are older. While she says that she sees him as a citizen/subject of Joseon rather than a baekjeong, she still fears that he can be dangerous to her. 

But we wonder how far that danger goes—she perceives the danger, but is she actually ever in danger? The way that he says that he came back to Joseon because of her very much seems to state that he would never raise a hand against her in that way. He is a man who—even though he isn’t aware right now how deep his feelings go—will eventually fall in love with her more, and essentially become a figure that will sacrifice something—very possibly his own life (in this case, everything he has)—for her. The moment she saved his life, it tied his fate to her. A red thread. A blood-debt. A life-debt. He cannot deny her. She is the answer.

And while she may the answer to all of Dong Mae’s questions, Ae Shin’s path seems one vastly different from his. From the get-go, we can already tell that this is not where her story ends—there is no version of this story where Ae Shin ends up with Dong Mae (well, except for maybe in my heart). Ae Shin’s end is more likely where Eugene Choi is. But as of right now, it’s hard to tell whether or not they’ll get their happy ending, too.

But we know how Dong Mae and Ae Shin’s story ends—in tragedy. I think we know that the moment Dong Mae lets go of her dress. He desires her and wishes to hold onto her—he’s held onto her from the moment he was saved—but he can’t. And he may already know that, too.

Their meeting is only a tender brush of fate.
