from "gender outlaws: the next generation"
image transcript:
Let me break it down this way: some lesbians and gays feel that their issues are more important than transgender issues, because transgender people are freaks. Some transgender peopleâoften, but not only, transsexualsâview transsexual issues as more important than the issues of, say, cross-dressers. Some among the more genderqueer portions of our community look down upon those who opt to live in a more ânormatively genderedâ space. There are even groups that cross-dressers feel superior to: sissies, drag kings and queens, âlittle girls,â and so on. Yes, Iâm sure that we could follow even each of these groups and find that, eventually, everyone has someone they view as a freak.
This is a human phenomenon, and one which occurs especially, it seems, among marginalized groups. Trekkers versus trekkies versus people in Klingon costumes, or furries versus fursuiters versus, oh, plushies. Iâm sure if I looked at model railroaders, Iâd probably find that HO gauge fans look down at N scale, or something like that. The taxonomies are endless, often circular, and are usually graded to a fineness that would be invisible to any outsider. We just want to identify the ârealâ freaks, so we can feel closer to normal. In reality, not a single one of us is so magically normative as to claim the right to separate out the freaks from everyone else. We are all freaks to someone. Maybe evenâif weâre honestâto ourselves.

The way black and brown people are treated in fandom spaces is fucking horrific honestly, and people refuse to acknowledge it.
So many white people are so obsessed with the idea of fandom being a Safe Space that they completely disregard POC feelings. Theyâll preach that they care about us sooo hard, but as soon as they have to put their money where their mouth is and actually act like they give a fuck, suddenly the Angry POCs are just âstarting discourseâ and âpicking fightsâ and âruining the fandomâ
If you are told something you think or believe is actually racist and your first response is to fight tooth and fucking nail to defend yourself because you donât want to have to care, you are racist. If you refuse to listen to POC when we say something or someone in a fandom space is problematic, you are racist. And it is so tiring.
White people will NEVER understand what it feels like to have to constantly defend yourself like this. When a fandom seems perfect and peaceful to YOU, itâs because none of the issues affect you. Being able to live in a blissful existence and forget racism exists so you can have fun with your stupid little fanfics and whitewashed fan art is a privilege not everybody has. Some of us need to be on the defense all the goddamn time just because white people want to âavoid discourseâ
Fandoms will NEVER be a safe place for everybody until they stop being a safe place for racists. And that means white people have to start giving a shit about issues that donât affect them.

I must not mock Gen Alpha. Mocking Gen Alpha is the mind killer. Mocking Gen Alpha is the little-death that brings total generational solidarity obliteration. I will engage with Gen Alpha lovingly. I will permit them to be cringe. And when they grow up I will turn my eye to their accomplishments. Where mocking has gone there will be nothing. Only generational solidarity remains

normalize having more than one best friend. "best friend" shouldn't just be a title reserved for one person... best friend is a species...
