Sora initially felt relief when Meiko took the initiative to make plans with her. She so badly wanted to talk to the girl, but was experiencing the rare phenomenon of not knowing what to say or when to say it. Meiko reaching out relieved some of the strain, but Sora felt unsettled upon greeting her. 

“Meiko!” Sora waved back, the call of her name more of an exclamation than an actual greeting. Her gaze fumbled over Meiko’s smile, as she’d spent her entire walk preparing to meet someone presumably sad. Sora’s prepared openers went out the window as she awkwardly increased her pace upon sight of her. “It’s so good to see you.”

Ah, judging by how stiff Sora became, she might be overdoing it. Meiko tried to shake off the feeling. If she returned to being sad now, who would it benefit? It didn’t mean she’d forgotten Meiccomon. It just meant she’d have to live for the two of them, right? Meiccomon wouldn’t want her to be sad, and they’d tried all they can, so --

“It’s good to see you too, Sora-san.” Meiko said with a slight bow of her head. “Um ---” How silly, now that her intended guest (?) was here, she found it a little more awkward again. “I wanted to try shopping for clothes with you, for once, I mean.” Maybe it was easier to do with Mimi, but she did wonder about trying Sora’s style as well. The city was more than large enough to see so many more different styles. They might not even go to any of the same streets Mimi had taken her last. “ ... ... Maybe even find a present?”

Takeru didn’t fully believe that she was okay, but he didn’t feel the need to push the matter either. He knew the pain of losing a Digimon partner, and even though Patamon had eventually come back, somehow that one battle with Devimon always came back to haunt him. He’d learned to cope with it, and he was sure Meiko would learn to do the same in time.

“It’s calming, isn’t it?” Takeru said softly, moving closer to stand beside Meiko and watch the water. “There usually aren’t many people around here, that’s part of the reason we chose this place to hold Chosen Children meetings… The other reason is that we hoped the calm atmosphere would help prevent Onii-chan and Taichi-san from getting into too many fights.” 

It was a true statement, but really Takeru was just trying to lighten the mood a little. He turned towards Meiko, offering a smile. 

Meiko let out a small hum, agreeing with him. She was more than relieved that he didn’t mention Meiccomon just yet. Managing this much was okay for now, and, just like he said, it’s oddly calming around here. It might seem somewhat boring to others, but the constant push and pull was a change she was used to. 

She did crack a smile, drawing one of her hands away from the railing to muffle a quiet laugh at the idea of the two fighting. He wasn’t wrong, but it was a balance even she noticed was good between the two. 

“Thanks.” She said eventually, turning to face him as well. “I needed a laugh. Even if it’s not really a nice thing to say about those two.” 

the single best piece of character animation in the fucking franchise, rescored (because i couldn’t not do this). it may be mixed a bit low – sound on my computer is fucking weird – so headphones might be a good idea.

Hikari was busy, which meant Takeru was walking home alone today. It wasn’t a problem, as much as he loved talking to Hikari it was nice to be left alone with his thoughts every once in a while, but this time he hadn’t gotten too far when he spotted a familiar face.

Curious, he followed her until she stopped on the bridge.

“Meiko-san?” he responded when she acknowledged his presence, and he stepped closer. “Are you okay? Why are you out here all alone?”

Meiko didn’t answer right away, focusing on the way the waters moved, ebbing and flowing. The smooth transition was unlike the harsh waters lashing the beach from the effects of the battle from that time. She shook her head but didn’t turn back towards him just yet.

“I’m okay.” Meiko answered, moving her hands from the railing to lean her arms over them. She wasn’t lying, at least she didn’t feel like she was. There’ll always be that Meiccomon shaped hole in her heart but she was coping. “Really.”

“It’s not ... I’m not going to do any thing bad. I just felt ... like being here.”

Maybe she was pushing it a little, smiling like this, but it was a nice day. The sun was bright and shining, and, other than the construction going around, it was almost the same as before. Sure, it might not be like this forever, and--- and she wanted to enjoy the days with her friends before she would have to head back.

That’s why she’d asked Sora out for once; she couldn’t just wait for them to do something anymore. She ... didn’t want them to worry again. She wanted to pay back their kindness, one by one.

“ Sora-san! ” Meiko waved, spotting the familiar chosen child.
