One of our first-time mums, Alberta Clipper, kindled with 5 kits yesterday afternoon ☀️. Unfortunately, her nest simply wasn’t warm enough and by the time we found them they were all quite cold 😥. We did, however, feel some movement from one of them so we rushed them into the house and warmed them in our hands by the fire 🔥. We were miraculously able to bring two of the babies back to life! Once they were nice and warm and wiggling around we reinforced Alberta’s nest and added extra straw and fur and placed them back in hoping that she would then care for her two wee ones 🤗. Sadly, upon checking on them this morning they had both passed away 😓. It seems that Alberta preferred to use the nest to keep herself warm and cozy and the babies were pushed aside. We’ve seen this happen before in cold weather (mums pushing their babies aside to use the nest for themselves) but the cold weather should definitely not be an excuse to forgo caring for your babies. Needless to say I am quite disappointed 😔. We have not had the best luck with first-time mums lately.
