Watching "My Journey to You", and there's an Ice Lotus Pool there. My Chengzhan brain cannot stop thinking about putting Jiang Cheng and Lan Zhan in an ice lotus pond now. Send help.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Hanguang-Jun, would you like to visit the local ice pool? It is in a remote, secluded area that you would have for yourself to meditate in peace and quiet." "Mn."
"Sandu Shengshou, would you like to visit the local lotus pond?" "Lotus flowers that survive in this ice and snow? Hmph, I go and take a look. Yes, I can find the way myself."
And thus, Lan Zhan and Jiang Cheng walked into the ice lotus pool cave at the same time to stop, freeze, and glare at each other.
"Hanguang-Jun, I see you're spending your precious time admiring lotus flowers. They must be unique like this to catch your eye, hm?" "I came to meditate in the waters." "In the ice. Some people would consider this too cold." "Some people, mn." Lan Zhan glares, Jiang Cheng glares back. Challenge accepted. Now they soak in the ice water, five feet apart, cause there is no tension.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm sorry I'm defiling you with my thoughts of ship, ice lotus pool.

Wei Wuxian's first meeting with teenage Jin Ling just gets funnier every time. Especially because, by this point, he should have a rough idea of how long it's been since he died, and he immediately recognizes Jin Ling as a member of the Jin Sect, clearly an important one if he's bossing other people around and spending absurd amounts of money on spiritual nets. If Wei Wuxian had spent A SINGLE MINUTE actively trying to guess this kid's identity, he probably could have worked out that this kid has a high chance of being his nephew.
But Wei Wuxian does not take the time (thirty seconds! WWX, you could have made an educated guess!) to figure out this kid's specific identity! He's just been wrestling with an incredibly stubborn donkey all day and he's probably hangry again because they had to share an apple. He just thinks to himself, "Wow, this Jin kid is a real spoiled brat," and goes from there!
"Didn't your mother ever teach you any manners?" he says obliviously to JIN LING, his own fucking nephew. When Jin Ling is FAMOUSLY ORPHANED. Like, you could go up to literally anyone on the street and be like, "What happened to that rich kid Jin Ling's parents?" and they would immediately tell you, "Oh, the evil Yiling Patriarch killed them, evilly." Very high chance that no one has ever said anything like this to Jin Ling - extremely rich young master, most famous orphan in the cultivation world, in possession of some very scary uncles - before.
And from Jin Ling's perspective, this outrageous comment is coming from his OWN UNCLE, Mo Xuanyu, his late grandfather's bastard son who was kicked out of the sect for being gay and crazy. There is NO WAY that Mo Xuanyu could somehow not know that Jin Ling has no parents, so of course, this has to be an intentional low-blow insult bringing up and disparaging his dead mother. So, of course this brat tries to start a fight! Mo Xuanyu started it with words like that!
And then Wei Wuxian trips him and essentially sits on him (using a talisman), there's the whole "My uncle is going to kill you!" & "Who's your uncle?" exchange, and Jiang Cheng immediately interrupts them. And Wei Wuxian has to do the sudden, incredibly simple, damning mental calculation of: "Jin kid + Jiang Cheng for an uncle = Oh, fuck."
It's funny every single time.

You are no different from any wangxian stan dear, you are like us
Lol, lmfao even.
Fellas, does it make you a Wangxian stan when you're capable of looking at characters critically and recognizing the importance of Hanguang-jun and Wei Wuxian for A-Ling's character development, instead of being blindly in denial about it?
My stance on dear A-Ling and his upbringing has nothing to do with my shipping preferences. But it has everything to do with my love for that stupid golden kiwi brat. I will not strip A-Ling of his complexity and other meaningful relationships in his life in order to turn him into a boring, uninspiring and one dimensional jiujiu obsessed clown with no personality. I love him too much.
Think whatever you want, anon. Jiang Zongzhu, however, fucks Hanguang-jun in his gorgeous, plump ass. They get married, and with Hanguang-jun’s help and teachings, A-Ling grows up with little to no pain chipping away at his big heart of gold. 💖

I mean I'd say that Jin Ling trusts and loves Jiang Cheng his jiujiu above all other adults. I kind of feel like Jiang Cheng is the one who loves Jin Ling the most and the one who Jin Ling is most guided and protected by. Does your analysis agree with that, or? I was kind of confused based on the comparisons you made with Lan Zhan there
My analysis was not about A-Ling and Jiang Zongzhu. It was specifically about Hanguang-jun and A-Ling.
A-Ling adores, trust his uncles and is guided, protected by them both, not only Jiang Cheng. This is where I slightly disagree with you, anon. They were his guardians, he grew up with them, they’re his only kin left. They’re both important to him in different ways but equally, there’s no arguing with that.
It's also a fact that where Jiang Cheng and A-Yao failed A-Ling, Hanguang-jun and Wei Wuxian tried to make up for it. They help him become a better person like no other, which also includes treating his uncle better, by the way!
Even in the extra that I mentioned, where we learn that A-Ling distances himself to protect his uncle, Wei Wuxian disciplines and slaps some sense into the brat because he disagrees with A-Ling’s methods and wording and explicitly tells him to actually speak to his uncle. And then baby yells for Hanguang-jun.

I hope it clears the confusion!

It completely slipped my mind to include this moment.
Tumblr media
In the extras, when Wei Wuxian hits him, A-Ling screams for none other than Hanguang-shushu, the one he thought would give him the harsh beating in the beginning of the novel. It's safe to assume he trusts Hanguang-Jun to protect him from Wei Wuxian and believes that Hanguang-Jun would strongly oppose Wei Wuxian raising his hand against him.

Omg, I’m not immune to an invitation to talk about Hanguang-shushu and A-Ling relationship.
It is a common theme in this fandom to assume that Hanguang-Jun hates A-Ling, and I don’t blame people for not pondering that for longer than two seconds. But they truly have one of the most compelling and intriguing dynamics, as well as character developments!
The conclusion that Hanguang jun is 'beefing' with A-Ling is most likely due to dafun mountme mating dance between Jiang Zongzhu and Hanguang-jun. I highly doubt people even remember any other interaction between them.
I always found it interesting that the most commonly used card when discussing this topic is 'he’s a minor!!!' but that does not absolve him of the consequences of his actions.
Take a look at the scene where Hanguang jun silences A-Ling (right after Jiang Zongzhu told Lan Jingyi to shut the hell up, which is frankly hilarious and comedically excellent)
Tumblr media
We love a victim blamer and a privileged brat who abuses his power to get ahead in the fair competition!
Now, forget about the rules for a second and think about the human lives A-Ling is blatantly disregarding. He refuses to free those people and prefers to keep them trapped, as it’s obviously more convenient for him, regardless of the danger it might pose. A weird creature roams the mountain, and they’re there to hunt it down, yet it never crosses A-Ling’s mind that he could’ve gotten them killed. He doesn’t care. What is a human life in comparison to A-Ling’s possible great achievements, right?
Dearest A-Ling is objectively being a dick. He can’t "I’m a minor!!!" his way out of this. Grow the hell up and own up to your mistakes.
You might think it’s not Hanguang-Jun’s place to discipline A-Ling, and you somewhat would be correct if we look at this scene in isolation and from a modern perspective. However, considering the context of the situation—keep in mind that Hanguang Jun's students, Lan Sizhui and Lan Jingyi, are participating in the night hunt. Granted, they’re skilled and vigilant; they noticed the nets. But what if they didn’t? It's also reasonable for Hanguang-Jun to demand fair competition for the same reason. After all, his students are there.
Remember, Hanguang Jun is a respected cultivator and A-Ling’s senior. The point Jiang Zongzhu brought up when he took it upon himself to discipline Lan Jingyi mere seconds ago.
It’s a fair game. You interrupt your seniors speaking, (looking at you, Lan Jingyi) you get silenced. You speak ill of human you endanger (looking at you, A-Ling) you get silenced.
I want to talk more about A-Ling and Hanguang shushu interactions as Hanguang jun is very important for A-Ling’s character development and healing process, so please don’t mind me.
Next time we see A-Ling he’s gasp once again being an arrogant dick.
He rather violently attacks a charlatan selling pictures of the Yiling Laozu, not only threatening to kill him but also attempting to give the person a beating. (Surely, he’s just a minor!!!)
Thankfully, Wei Wuxian saves the poor person.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And A-Ling decides there’s no better way to deal with the situation than setting his dog on Wei Wuxian.
Tumblr media
Dearest Hanguang-jun arrives to save the day, and the third-person narrator makes an excellent point about Hanguang jun’s character: He’s a respected teacher who doesn’t care about where the child is coming from, who their parents are, and what sect they belong to. He disciplines them all the same.
You dare to be rude, disrespectful, and utterly unreasonable? Hanguang-jun will discipline you. He wants everyone to be good, and A-Ling is no exception.
Tumblr media
A-Ling makes the wildest, the most erroneous assumption about Hanguang-jun. We know it’s wrong because he doesn’t harm the dog, doesn’t chase after A-Ling to give him a harsh beating (I wonder why that’s A-Ling’s first thought). He lets him escape.
A-Ling is genuinely terrified of Hanguang-jun, which is a continuous misconception he has of him at the beginning of the story. It's honestly quite interesting that the books make a direct comparison with Jiang Zongzhu. Wei Wuxian even uses the same tactic by shouting Hanguang-jun and Jiang Zongzhu's names to trick A-Ling.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A-Ling's fear acts as a deterrent, preventing him from behaving rudely or disrespectfully. He's afraid of facing consequences from Hanguang-jun. This might be the first instance in his life where he genuinely considers his actions and their impact on others.
Tumblr media
In the same Yi City arc, we receive direct confirmation that Hanguang Jun remains impartial in his teachings; those are not empty words from the narrator. He disciplines children and employs silencing spell yet again.
Tumblr media
Yi City is where the shift in the relationship occurs. A-Ling begins to view Hanguang-jun differently, his cold heart softens, and he finds himself feeling a new emotion toward Hanguang-shushu: admiration.
Tumblr media
It’s once again quite interesting that books make comparisons with A-Ling’s uncles. Hanguang-Jun very clearly evokes similar feelings in A-Ling’s brain. He has adopted him as his uncle and has no idea yet. He weirdly feels protective over him as well, giving Wei Wuxian a shovel? Talk? Or at least something rather similar to that.
Stay by Huangaung-jun’s side properly.
Tumblr media
I don’t even know how to approach the stabbing scene that follows next. People love using it to justify Hanguang-Jun’s alleged 'dislike' of A-Ling, but literally nothing happens. A-Ling stabs Wei Wuxian, Hanguang Jun and Wei Wuxian escape, and that’s it. Hanguang Jun doesn’t share his thoughts on the incident, doesn’t say anything about A-Ling. The next time they see each other, all Hanguang Jun does is, well, stand before Wei Wuxian, protecting him.
Tumblr media
And then, AND THEN, oh my god! Something happens that absolutely drives me crazy whenever I ponder it. The book's structure draws a direct parallel between Hanguang-Jun and A-Ling.
Tumblr media
A-Ling hesitates to stand by his uncle’s side, understandably so, as at that point, he already harbors affection for his shishu and starts questioning what he’s been taught. Hanguang-jun refuses to stand by his uncle’s side for the exact same reason. He went through the same thought process years ago. Having grown and matured over time, he's now able to make his own decisions. A-Ling is now embarking on a similar journey, beginning to develop his own sense of judgment, ponder what is right and what is wrong.
It happens again in the temple. We all know what happens in the temple, so I feel there’s no need for me to go into the details. However, I want to include this little moment because it warms my heart.
Tumblr media
Anyway, parallels between Hanguang-Jun and A-Ling.
When everything settles and Xiao Shushu is dealt with, A-Ling finds himself in the same position as Hanguang-jun years ago. People around A-Ling are determined to slander Xiao Shushu and speak poorly of him, which is perhaps understandable. However, in that moment, A-Ling says something important.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Why bother with the young brats? Just drag them home and imprison them.
Young brats who know nothing about what is right and what is wrong are Hanguang Jun and A-Ling. Despite the expectations of their elders, they opt to follow their own instincts and embrace love. They choose love.
A-Ling would’ve never been where he is by the end of the novel without Hanguang-Jun and Wei Wuxian guiding him. They showed him with their own example and their actions how to stand strong and never back down, how to trust people you love.
A-Ling is finally healing.
Lan Wangji's beef with Jin Ling always annoyed me cause like... that is a child
