DJATS APPRECIATION WEEK: DAY TWO favorite musical moment: karen and graham smiling at each other (twice) during "let me down easy"

I love love love the moment in Gideon the Ninth where the Third challenges the Sixth in a clearly unfair move, and Gideon, half-on-instinct, still faking a vow of silence, simply unsheathes her sword, at which Harrow doesn't miss a beat and says her "The Ninth House will represent the Sixth House" line, while Gideon just smiles.

In Gideon's head this is "I am not standing for this shit anymore. For the love of God, Harrow, please understand what I'm doing and back me up here. Oh thank fuck you've got it. I'm so happy I could kiss you."

In Harrow's head this appears to be "For fuck's sakes, Nav, what do you think you're doing. Ok, think. Can't give anything away. Have to project unity, but fuck you, Griddle, for making me do this."

But for everyone else this is the legendary, mysterious, terrifying, bone magicians of the Ninth House, with no warning, stepping between the Sixth and the Third. The skull-faced cavalier who hasn't said a single word simply drawing her sword. The shockingly powerful and inscrutable necromancer matter-of-factly declaring an alliance that no-one, even the supposed allies, knew about. The sinister smirk on the cavalier's face. And the line from Harrowhark: "Death first to vultures and scavengers."

I love it so much and I love additionally the moment that this sets up in the climax, which is essentially the same emotional beat, the key changes being 1) both Harrow and Gideon have become open and vocal with each other; 2) both Harrow and Gideon are working together consciously as well as instinctively; 3) their opponents don't back down so they follow through. "Nav, show them what the Ninth House does." "We do bones, motherfucker."

Little over 100 pages into GtN, and I have to say, I really love Dulcinea!! She might be my favorite character besides Gideon, she’s just so interesting.

It kills me that Gideon doesn’t realize how much Harrowhark loves her, because she thinks she’s got the hots for the Body and can’t love anything else. In HtN she’s so so fucking close to putting it together, Gideon practically describes what Harrowhark has done to her like Harrow created a whole new locked tomb in her mind to put Gideon in and somehow thinks she did that because Harrow doesn’t want to be beholden to anyone, instead of the truth that that’s the only way Harrow knows how to love. Gideon walked herself to the right up to the answer and turned the other way and it kills me and Jod do I love this series

nobody is doing it like harrowhark nonagesimus. she ran a planet alone from the age of ten. she memorized a 10000 page fanfic out of pure repetition. she lobotomized herself to command f and replace every instance of her gfs name. her favourite food is gruel. she constructed an entire time bubble in death to provide backstory for her lobotomy. she hallucinated coffee au fanfiction.

Harrow the Ninth is really a book about what happens when you are the Best At Something your whole life and you sweat and bleed and sacrifice everything to earn your way to the place/position you've always dreamed of, but then when you do succeed it isn't as you expected. Not only does everyone you once admired turn out to be an awful person, but your abilities are no longer special. Your talent isn't enough. Your effort isn't enough. Your new peers have worked just as hard as you have and know just as much as you do, but more than that: they seem suddenly better, faster, more capable, all while you flounder in the shallow end of the pool as the abilities you spent your whole life honing abandon you in your time of need. Humiliation becomes your constant companion as you sweat and bleed and try anyway, but what once netted you endless success and acolades is now barely enough to survive.

And then, of course, there is The Skull

What if we're just a little off the mark, when it comes to Ianthe's goals? It does seem like she's trying to become god. Studying resurrection theory, energy transfers, trying to replicate John's stasis trick on those apples. But Ianthe has always either shied from or been denied the spotlight. And the path she's on starts with her specialising in Resurrection theory.

What was the Resurrection, other than the obvious? It was the first recorded act in history, the beginning of necromancy. Why would a girl playing power double for her non-adept sister want to learn the secrets of the Resurrection? Well, there are plenty of reasons, but one that comes to mind is to learn how to make someone a necromancer who isn't. The first necromancer had to have gained the power somehow, right? Can you control who is and isn't a necromancer, if you're willing to pay the price? And then there was the conversation between Coronabeth and Judith, where they as much as said Corona could be king, but for the lack of job openings.

Whether she knows it yet or not, I suspect Ianthe's long-term plans are bending toward making Coronabeth god. All because she didn't want to keep doing her sister's homework.
