An addendum to the battery issues that @anonymusbosch talked about. Not all batteries are chemically powered!
We tend to think of batteries as lithium-ion, or maybe lead lead-dioxyde if you're familiar with car batteries and such. And that makes sense for the end-user mentality we've been fed so far but it doesn't have to be that way for energy production facilities. Tom Scott made a cool video about a lake that's used as a battery[1], Technology Connections made a video where he touches on using his own house as a "thermal battery"[2] (though this latter one doesn't work for my next point, but illustrates the concept better)
Basically, what we need to have something that works as a battery is something that can take electrical energy in, change state, then at our command return to the original state and return some electrical energy to us. The lake can do that by having its water infused with potential energy (raised to the higher location) then doors open and the place works as a regular hydroelectric plant.
There are obviously problems with creating artificial lakes like that, which I don't know enough to comment on, but the reason I'm mentioning this is that batteries being the future doesn't have to rely on lithium mining. Water potential energy is a simple way to make a lithium-less battery, molten salt plants are a more usable example of thermal battery to maintain the temperature from solar energy and work 24/7.
On a more end-user friendly version, my childhood home had solar-powered water heaters. Just take the water up to the roof so the sun can heat it. We cut down the consumption of a LOT of energy just by doing that instead of electrically heating water for showers, but this only works on locations where water won't freeze overnight.
Once again, the real way to fix the climate crisis is to break out of pre-packaged solutions, re-examine biases, and tailor your actual solutions to the place they'll be deployed.

The Joshua tree is on its way to extinction because so-called green energy companies want to keep the death machine of civilization going by installing large swaths of solar panels over the desert floor, a big metal blanket that will kill everything it covers: the desert tortoise, the sage grouse, the hawks and snakes and beautiful flowers that have flourished for thousands of years. Gone. Gone.
All so that we can keep the dead heart in the rotting corpse of industrial civilization beating into the next decade. These are the "good guys" btw, these are the "renewable" "carbon neutral" options: covering the desert in miles of metal and microchips until every living being without a bank account is dead.

With all the shit going down, I don't got enough energy to try and fight in a place that seems more interested in transphobes that trans folks.
I made a mastodon account, @[email protected] if yall care about it. Not sure where I'll be writing when I get back to it, but I'll probably post stuff there about it.
It's been fun, and maybe it will be fun again someday.

fine, i'll say my two cents.
y'all know that the explanations that matt gave as to why he banned are predstrogen aren't for us, right? saying it was because of sexual content or exploding a car with hammers, or whatever. justification is irrelevant to his actions; he's an authority; metaphorically he's an abusive parent, and one of his children talked back so he hit her.
the justification isn't for us; it's for transphobes. it's for people who have already learned a predisposition against trans people, who will listen and agree that it's justified. she broke the rules! anyone who breaks the rules gets banned, duh. it's for people who won't think twice about how many trans women have been banned, censored, etc., who won't realize that this is just the latest in a pattern of attacks because, because anyone who got censored is just an individual who broke the rules.
he's telling them what to think. his words are targeted at the people who will listen to him without second guessing them.
the rules are not there to protect us. the purpose of a system is what it does. the words of the rules are not there as an explanation of their purpose; the words are the language and justification that the oppressor uses to keep their followers loyal. the rules themselves exist to keep us in line.
the explanation is not for us; the rule is.

tumblr had to ban predstrogen because she painted a fake tunnel onto the side of a mountain and tricked photonicmatthew into running into it, don't you see?

As a trans person who pays the bills hawking my Patreon on this site, Photomatt's behavior has been disappointing to say the least. I hope staff can come to a more reasonable conclusion.

Right, considering the current state of corporate politics on this site, and that it seems that only those affected seem to be actively speaking on the matter, it is up to I, the only fucking cishet on tumblr, to drag this out to a wider audience.

You hate yourself so loudly. You hate yourself at the top of your lungs. Your loathing for yourself permeates your speech. “Sorry I’m just rambling.” “Don’t worry about it.” “Just ignore me.” “Sorry if I’m annoying you.” “Sorry I don’t make sense.” “Sorry about that.” Sorry, sorry, sorry. You act as if you have to beat everyone else to the punch. As if the punching bag is you. If you hate yourself first, if you hate yourself loudest, then nobody will hurt you. You clapped your hands over your ears and shut your eyes and balled yourself up so that you’d never have to experience people’s loathing for you. And it meant you never heard their love. You drowned it out. You screamed your hatred over it. And you never got to hear it.

I've seen this before, but it's been years and it just came across my Twitter in its dying days. The words are from a favorite author of mine, Maggie Stiefvater, and they are the words I most need to hear when it comes to dealing with chronic pain and illness. I didn't need this the first time I saw it, six years ago. I need it now. Maybe you do, too.

You should cut autistic people some slack when it comes to being blunt, not understanding social cues, or not understanding social norms.
But.
If somebody is being a dick to you, if they’re flirting with you and won’t stop when you ask them to, if they’re being really inappropriate or invasive, it doesn’t matter that they’re autistic! You’re allowed to be uncomfortable with that.
I am autistic and sometimes I do have trouble with social interactions. I often cannot detect sarcasm unless it’s clear from context, I can’t always tell when something is a joke or when somebody is exaggerating, I often can’t tell what people are ‘saying’ if they don’t say it outright, and, though I try to guess anyway, it is extremely taxing and confusing for me.
But that doesn’t mean I can walk around stomping on everybody’s boundaries after they make them explicitly known to me.
I have read far too many stories of specifically some autistic men being completely inappropriate around women, only for the women to be told something along the lines of, “he can’t control it, he’s autistic.” If he can independently go places, he should be able to learn to stop when you say to stop. If he really can’t learn that, then he needs more support (maybe a carer to be out with him and to help him navigate social situations), but, either way, it is completely unacceptable to write off sexual harassment or bigoted behaviour just because somebody is autistic.

This could also be a case of "humans are bad with big numbers". LPL has 4.5 million subscribers. That's obviously a lot of people, but if every subscriber was American, it would still only be 1.5% of the population, and there is a decent amount of subscribers that do it professionally or as a hobby and understand that most cases are low security. And there's also the group of people who just like seeing companies being shit on because of misleading advertising, out just like to see bad reviews because that's fun.
Considering all those and a goal audience, I don't know how many people are actually in that "constant threat" mindset
But I do come from Brazil, and lived in a city with a decent gang problem so maybe I'm just jaded
Watching lock picking videos and being unnerved about how people are increasingly being sold a vision of security and safety that influences their biases about the world and having that feeling duel with the mechanical eroticism of watching an intricately designed lock click and turn under the nimble fingers of a man who won't hurt it

I usually go with "do something you are ok with doing when things are awful" cause there's a lot of shit I love to do when I'm happy, but the thought of doing it on a rough day is unbearable. Ok the other hand, my job is not the thing that gives me the most joy when I'm happy, but it's nice and on bad days it's actually something I like doing to calm me down......
Well, the main job description is, but there's always the extra responsibilities that come up, and reporting, and so on...
my career advice isn't "do what you love" it's "do what will give you the most money without making you want to kill yourself"

As soon as I switched it felt more natural to me. I started thinking people were taking any me and my ear just kind perked up at any mention of Gwen or my actual name even before I had come out to those people.
Maybe it's because my deadname is really common and most of the time when the name was called at school it wasn't directed at me.
Weird question.
So currently, even to people who I've been presenting femme to for a bit now, I'm not using the name Sierra irl. I generally use a femme-leaning-but-still-neutral nickname based on my masc name, bc since it was already a nickname of mine, I respond to it better.
Is there a good way to start instinctively getting yourself to respond to a name before you get people irl to call you it? Tbh online has helped a LOT, but I'd still be interested if anyone has advice.
