I loveloveLOVE when a prisoner with their hands bound behind their back gets constantly shoved around by their captors and keeps falling to the ground because they can’t catch or balance themselves.

Whumpee slips a note into a stranger’s palm, hoping they’ll understand the cry for help hastily scribbled on the scrap of paper.
But the stranger only smirks and hands the note to Whumper. “You should watch them a little closer.”

I know the scene was condensed for pacing reasons, but man, we were so robbed of an onscreen anime gagging in Attack on Titan.
They’re just so rare and I would have loved to see this scene animated.

So I started watching Shōgun and I noticed a trope I’ve seen a couple times that I actually really dig.
At the end of the first episode, Blackthorne is brought to Osaka as a prisoner. Throughout the entirety of the journey, he has his hands bound in front of him, presumably to give him more freedom of motion so they don’t have to baby him. However, when they finally arrive at Osaka, his hands have suddenly been switched to being bound behind him.
At first, I was a little confused because it happened so suddenly without explanation, but then I realized: they wanted him to look and feel more submissive when presenting him to their lord. It’s not about restraining him (clearly he’s proven he’s not going to run at this point); it’s a power move.
And I’ve seen the trope before too! In Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children (the book, not the film), Emma ties Jake’s hands behind him for appearance’s sake rather than for practical reasons. She wants to create a power dynamic between the two of them.
It’s a trope I really enjoy: when the bondage is entirely about power and presentation, not practicality. It’s bondage used as a political tool, which I think is really cool.

We see that actively with whump and its reception outside the community.
I’ve seen people accuse us of being depraved and disgusting because we “endorse” violence.
Whump absolutely does not endorse violence in the real world. No one here actually wants to torture another human being. It’s entirely about fictional characters, emotional stakes, and storytelling, not just gratuitous torture for torture’s sake. Anyone who took less than a surface look at whump would immediately see that.
Context is so important, but it is getting forgotten in the pursuit of blind judgement based on a very narrow black-and-white view of the world.
I'm gonna say it.
It's unhinged to assume that someone's taste in fiction equates to what they believe is moral or good, or is something they want to see or experience in real life.
That is a bonkers assumption to make.
I'm tired of humoring people with long arguments about it when the simple fact is it is a totally fucking absurd reach to accuse someone who enjoys something in fiction of being in favor of it in real life.
I'm tired of pretending like this is a legitimate position to hold-- that they should be afraid of fiction's dire influence on a reader's moral decay or that it's a sign of what the author secretly wants for realsies in real life.

A character who's been shot is captured by enemies/bad guys. They're bleeding badly, and their captors need them alive. The bullet is removed, and the wound is poured with alcohol and bandaged tightly - none of it is done gently, and, being tied up (and maybe gagged), they can do nothing but scream and cry out in pain while enduring the rough treatment.

This movie also had a couple really nice bondage scenes involving Broderick’s character. One where he’s tied to a tree and another where he’s chained and gagged on a horse.

Whumpees hung from the ceiling by their wrists. Defiant Whumpees mouthing off despite the pain, and having weights tied to them as a consequence.

we all love our gagged whumpees, but the way im automatically won over is when the tiny process of whumpee being gagged is described in very careful detail.
pushing the tangled hair out of their face so you can slide the straps under it. maybe it's coated with sweat.
if whumpee is defiant, i love seeing how they toss their head back and how you have to force their mouth open. maybe they bite a few times? very annoying for whumper. but shoving their head back towards you, gripping onto their hair and telling them to cut that shit out...ooh, that's fun.
obedient whumpees are just as fun because they'll just open up for whumper. stick that pretty tongue out and remain still as you clip it behind their head. maybe you can even stroke their hair a little. throw in a 'good boy/girl' for good measure 🙏🙏🙏
then theres the look!! i wanna know what they eyes are doing!! are they glaring straight ahead to avoid looking at whumper, or shooting daggers at them anyway? do they stare at the ground? or is it all listless if they've done this many times before?
and when you're done... i wanna know the result. what kind of gag is it (personally im a sucker for open-mouth) and how does it make em look? are they drooling already? what does whumper have to say about this?
i dont care how unnecessarily long you think you made your gagging scene, we're whump writers we're all here to indulge!! give your whumpee's mouths some love 🫶🫶

I sure do love bondage scenes!
But you know what I don’t love?
Bondage scenes where the captive is gagged, but their hands are restrained in the front.
*stares menacingly at writers who do this*
