Lost Love and Missed Chances in "Dead Stars"
Tumblr media
The story entitled "Dead Stars" by Paz Marquez Benitez clearly shows lost love and societal limits. The author's third person point of view focus, description, and symbolism are revealed through these ways; it also dive into emotional issues within Alfredo Salazar, who is dealing with the consequences of his decisions.
The limited perspective enables the reader to see directly into Alfredo's pain as he want for Julia, whom he once adored but now lives with Esperanza instead. This conveys sympathy for him while also hiding any knowledge of how Esperanza feels about the situation. The context is such that it takes place in a society where there are significant pressures from those around you; this is evident from certain small clues provided by the author. Marriages, for example, may appear to be arrangements before the event, or even more so when one realizes how much importance is placed on social standing in comparison to other things, such as true love, which should have been treasured passionately.
Dead Stars is a piece of prose, it relies largely on suggestive language to create vivid images in the brains of its readers. The passage "He remembered those nights under acacias that were sweetly fragrant with their white blossoms…" (Benitez) shows Alfredo's intense love for another woman and the emotional weight of his decisions.
Past interactions with Julia, current conversation with Esperanza, and Alfredo's thoughts are all various aspects of the same story. This demonstrates that, while this moment may be empty or poor for him now because other people are involved (such as Esperanza), there is a strong element of comparison between what has happened in the past- with people he used to know as lovers- and what is happening now, resulting in an atmosphere of regret for missed opportunities.
Benitez reveals via Alfredo's inner conflict how love cannot thrive in the face of social limitations. In short, the author warns against sacrificing true affection for conformity, which eventually leads to regret over missed opportunities; thus, this story functions as a mirror, forcing its audience members to reflect on their own lives by asking questions such as "Are personal happinesses always determined by societal norms?" Should external circumstances ever impact our most passionate decisions? But what will happen if we carry out these ideas? So we'll discover exactly where he went wrong by giving up everything so easy!
