Friendly reminder that Simmons said “So close” when he and Grif found “Bonner St.” during the season 10. Simmons has fun too 2k15.

I'm both proud and disappointed by the amount of pumpkins with holes on my dash today. It is both too many and not enough. It's too many of the same picture and not enough variety. Surely by now 'pumpkin with a hole in it' is a searchable category for stock photos.
Diversity is important.
damn almost forgot guys im so sorry

(please don't kill me) can I have some more grif headcanons?
no worries anon i am more than happy to talk about grif more! grif stans rise up. sorry if there's a theme here i like talking about grif's ocd
grif's head being empty save for simmons when omega infects him? yeah. it's the ocd. when he has intrusive thoughts he thinks of simmons to distract himself, clear his mind save for the thing that makes him happy. ALSO why epsilon says grif is always thinking about simmons in my "epsilon checks with the team" drawing— it's the intrusive thoughts!
speaking of epsilon and grif's ocd. church figured out that grif had ocd just from the interactions they had, which is why s9 grif was so fucked up. epsilon didn't remember grif's EXACT symptoms, so he defaulted to giving grif stereotypical ocd, resulting innnnn... obsessive grif a la season 9
grif deep cleans more often than you think. simmons walks into his room/bunk and it's just spotless sometimes because grif's intrusive thoughts get REALLY bad a lot and deep cleaning is his go-to reaction to it.
also sometimes grif just yells randomly because he starts thinking of violent/gross things when he doesn't want to. donut lopez and simmons are just used to it
hoarder. ocd style hoarding. "i might need this later what if i throw it out and i need it later? i can't throw it out"
seriously grif has so much ocd in canon like . the fact that he started mimicking sarge because the structure of command he was used to got demolished? he needs routines and structure or he goes nuts
i know you asked for grif hcs but i have so many thoughts on grif having ocd so i hope this suffices! 😔

my favorite thing about fanart of out-of-armor wash is how much of it features him going gray at the temples
like all the blood gulch crew take guesses as to how old he is and eventually caboose just asks him and wash answers and he’s WAY younger than everybody thought, certainly too young for that many lines in his face and that much gray in his hair, and wash is like “well, that’s what happens when shit hits the fan for several years straight”
and they all take a gander at one another and realize that oh shit they're all starting to look older than they should

Okay, you’re all starving for Grif content, apparently, so here we go.
The first info we get about the Grif family comes, naturally, with Kai’s introduction:
“Well, you always looked after me when Mom ran away to join the circus.”
Boom. Here came the circus backstory, and the hint that Grif’s childhood wasn’t exactly functional.
In s13 we got Doc’s severe burn:
“And I’m Dexter Grif! Reporting for duty. Oh, wait, never mind! I forgot that I’m a worthless sack of human excrement, that wouldn’t be caught dead following orders, because I’m too busy wishing my parents loved me as much as my sister, hahaha! Maybe if I had a stable father figure growing up I wouldn’t be so opposed to order, but I guess that’s just what happens when your mother turns tricks behind the elephant cages at the circus, hahahaha! Here Dex, have some more cotton candy!”
Adding on the circus backstory, we were now given new info: Kaikaina was the favored child, and Grif, despite his usual apathetic demeanor, was deeply affected by this.
For a long time, that was the info we had. There was Schrödinger’s draft (that season 17 then canceled completely, holy shit) which could easily be added to the canon angst of Grif’s childhood.
Now comes the more exciting parts.
At the beginning of season 16, Kai says this to Grif:
“You should really stick with what you’re good at, big bro: not calling Mom, and sucking the cheese out of mozzarella sticks.”
And I remember doing a doubletake at the mention of their mom. A part of me just always figured that she disappeared with the circus, but this suggested she stayed in touch – not only that, but she remained close with Kai.
Grif’s distance to their mom is once again noted. Kai’s comment, however, can be read in different manners. Either Kai is talking about the present – meaning she still has contact with their mom, while Grif continues to ignore her. Or it could be a throwback to when Grif moved to go to college and then failed to reach out to their mom. Once again, this highlights a relationship between Kai and their mom with Grif out of the picture.
Skipping ahead to s17, we get the not-a-draft reveal, but also some more details about the Grif family situation:
Grif: “All my memories were in there! Fuck, Kai! Where’s mom living?!”
Kai: “The trailer park…?”
So this suggests that despite the circus thing, their mom remained in their lives, perhaps even returning to stay with Kai until the fire. Whereas before it’d been popular to believe she just left and Grif took over to watch over Kai, it seems that this was only a temporary period.
Kai, despite mentioning how important Grif was to her in their mom’s absence, never seems to harvest that many negative emotions towards their mom. She stayed with her, kept in contact. It was Grif who pulled away, and this could be read (which leads to the forever unanswered question – just how much depth are we supposed to look for in a comedy show about colorful space marines?) as Grif refusing to forgive her for this abandonment.
This all leads to Grif admitting that he left his family on purpose.
“No. No, I needed more structure than a bearded mom and… school can give me. So I enlisted. I… I ran away.”
He mentions their mom as a direct reason to join the army. The resentment Grif has for their mom is nothing new, and I know I’m just repeating stuff you already know, but it’s that “not calling Mom” comment that keeps haunting me.
Mama Grif might still be out there. Kai might be in contact with her. But it’s been Grif’s direct decision to not stay in contact with her – by not calling her, by practically fleeing Earth to get away.
Despite Kai and Grif’s closeness, they do not agree on this. It’s not a cause of an argument, it’s not something they directly talk about, but everything suggests that Kai still has a relationship with a parent that Grif gave up on. Kai might not be aware of Grif’s resentment, he might not have brought it up. It’s a sore spot, even more sore now when it’s been revealed that Grif’s feelings towards their mom led to him not just leaving her, but Kai as well. That was a consequence of the distance Grif needed to put between himself and their mom.
Coming back to Doc’s comment, I hardly think Grif wants to blame Kai for staying in contact with their mom, because Grif could never have the relationship she had with their mom. Kai was the favorite child. Grif was not. Grif was left with a responsibility he did not deserve nor want because their mom failed to be a responsible parent. Grif was hurt, and as a result, he left and eventually turned towards apathy to get comfortable in his new role. Kai cannot let go of their mom because she was loved, and she might not understand why Grif pulled away if she isn’t aware of Grif’s jealousy towards her role, and if she wasn’t old enough to properly understand the consequences of their mom’s neglect.
It’s quite ironic, looking at s15, that Grif once again leaves a family because he did not feel appreciated.
And despite all this, one of Grif’s most well-known traits is not apathy – it’s loyalty.

The red one is for Simmons.
Blue is for Tucker, Yellow is for Kai and Green is for Locus.
Holy shit new headcanon.
Grif finds out Simmons is trans and gives him a red reverse uno card with the trans flag painted on the back.

Do we ever really consider the friendship between Grif and Church? Cause like, for one, the Blues 'n Reds are perfect parallels of our Reds 'n Blues, and Temple and Biff were such close friends.
Plus they seemed to get along pretty well in the jail in Season 3. And Church referred to Grif as "crafty, like me" when Grif was trying to take Kai to the Blues.
Point is, did they ever hang out and complain about relationship struggles? Church with his still-in-love-with-Tex problem and Grif has his whole heavily-implied/more-or-less-canon fuckbuddies relationship with Simmons.
Sure, Church is dead, and Grif is stubborn and hateful, but I think it's an interesting dynamic to explore.
Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

I just realized that everyone on Red Team has had a near death experience
Sarge literally died from getting shot in the head and Grif brought him back with CPR
Lopez has been torn apart, taken over, blown up, reconstructed, and poorly treated throughout the entire show
Donut had a grenade explode on his face and had to be flown out for medical services
Grif gets run over by Sheila and only survives because Sarge surgically implants Simmons’s parts into him
and Simmons? Well, he’s the one that got turned into a Cyborg, theres no way there wasnt a bit of resuscitation needed
What does this mean? That “rather dead then red” is actually about the reds being unable to die? (jk jk)

Red Team fans have all the right to be mad about how Red Team is constantly treated as comic relief, but we should acknowledge that this treatment has basically turned them into gods.
They can’t be harmed. Look at puny Blue Team. Wash takes a bullet to the throat and gets brain damage. Tucker gets stabbed in the gut and collapses. Weak. Pathetic. Sarge takes a bullet to the head and just needs a little CPR and he is right as rain. Grif gets run over by a tank, and just needs some spare organs, and he is back on his feet. They can’t be touched. They can’t be killed. They are invincible.
And it’s not just physical harm. They are free from moral responsibilities as well. Remember Carolina chewing out Tucker for wanting to kill Temple? Never mind Sarge, Grif and Simmons whistling innocently while Surge and Gene are melted by lava. No one keeps an eye on them. No one expects it from them.
If this treatment continues, Red Team cannot be contained. They will become more powerful, and when we first realize it, it’s too late.

There’s so much to explore with helmets in RVB fanfic. Specifically, characters not knowing what the others look like (or only knowing what SOME of them look like.) Consider:
That au where your eyes change color when you meet your soulmate. Wash/Lina/whomever meets the reds and blues for the first time and only realizes their eyes changed when they look in the mirror that night. They have no idea which one is their soulmate
Conversations about what they imagine the others look like. “I’m not sure why, but I see you with freckles.” / “You said something a while ago and I’m like 98% sure you’re latino?”
A fun Mulan-gets-stabbed-and-surprise!-she-has-boobs type scene in which the helmet only comes off after someone is gravely injured, and amidst the panic and rush for medical attention, someone/several someones are gawking
“You’ve seen his face? No fair! I haven’t even seen his face!” / “Am I the only one here who doesn’t know what you look like?”
This one’s more armor related than helmet, but- prosthetic limbs (especially for Simmons, of course.) Scars. Insulin patches. Vitiligo. Things you’d have no reason to notice if you couldn’t see the person.
“You’re bigger than I thought. That’s not a fat joke, you’re just built. I take back the twig jokes.”
“Wait, when did you get that scar? Did you get that because of me?” Angst
And I’m always a sucker for the classic ‘fuck, you’re hot’ trope

That scene in season 6 when Grif is a sargeant and Simmons asks “Sir?” and Sarge and Grif both reply to him is just a sfw version of the “Daddy, pass the salt” meme.

People who try to tell me things are ‘not that deep’ fundamentally misunderstand me, I am not a fish desperately in search of the ocean, I am a magpie that roves the canons, searching for shiny things to put in my nest. Whether or not it actually is given deep narrative weight by canon itself is of secondary importance to the fact that it has the potential to be interesting, and thus, I covet it.
