From Zhuhai to the World: “Qiaopi” Opera Showcases Chinese Cultural Diversity and Global Influence

To promote and extol the cultural values and spirit of honesty, integrity, hard work, courage in pioneering, and devotion to one’s roots encapsulated in “Qiaopi,” and to significantly enhance the influence and appeal of overseas Chinese culture, a press conference was held on April 24 in Shenzhen to announce the “Qiaopi: Journey of Ten Thousand Miles” tour. This event was guided by the China Overseas Chinese Federation and the Guangdong Overseas Chinese Federation, organized by the Publicity Department of the Zhuhai Municipal Committee and the Zhuhai Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese, and executed by the Zhuhai Performing Arts Group.

The press conference featured the presence of Guo Qihua, Deputy Minister of the Cultural Exchange Department of the China Overseas Chinese Federation. Also in attendance were Lin Kefeng, a senior inspector of the Guangdong Overseas Chinese Federation; Min Yuntong, Executive Deputy Minister of the Publicity Department of the Zhuhai Municipal Committee; Zhang Lili, member of the Party Group and Vice Chairman of the Zhuhai Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese; Chen Weian, Secretary of the Party Committee, and Zou Jianhong, General Manager of the Zhuhai Performing Arts Group. They provided an overview and responded to media inquiries.

“Qiaopi,” a key cultural project of Guangdong province and Zhuhai’s first original national opera, is produced under the guidance of the Guangdong Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism. It features a distinguished creative team including composer Meng Weidong, playwright Wang Yong, directors Liao Xianghong and Deng Yijiang, and conductors Zhu Man and Fan Jie, with performances by leading domestic artists such as singers Lü Wei, Li Yang, Li Bufan, and Dong Bin. Set against the backdrop of Tangjiawan in Zhuhai, the opera delves into the unique “Qiaopi” culture of the Lingnan region, weaving a profound historical narrative on stage that tells of the overseas Chinese renowned for their reliability and commitment.

Since its premiere at the 2nd Zhuhai Arts Festival in October 2022, the opera “Qiaopi” has been staged in cities such as Beijing, Chongqing, Macau, Hangzhou, Urumqi, Guangzhou, and Zhongshan, eliciting deep emotional responses from audiences. It has been selected for the National Culture and Tourism Ministry’s 2022–2023 “Chinese National Opera Heritage and Development Project” and has received various national and provincial awards, including the Outstanding Opera Award at the 5th China Opera Festival and the First Prize at the 15th Guangdong Arts Festival. The opera has also featured on significant cultural platforms such as the “Outstanding Stage Art Works Exhibition of the New Era” and Macau’s “Spring of Haojiang.”

At the press conference, Min Yuntong outlined the touring schedule, noting that from April 24 to May 15, the opera will visit key diaspora cities such as Shenzhen, Shantou, Xiamen, Ningbo, and Dongguan. Associated activities, tailored to each location, will include a concert version of “Qiaopi” at Ningbo University and visits to the Shantou Overseas Chinese Museum and Ningbo Commerce Museum, aimed at enhancing the cultural impact and resonance of overseas Chinese heritage.

Zou Jianhong, General Manager of Zhuhai Performing Arts Group, elaborated on the preparations for the tour and the opera’s creative process. The creative team, after extensive research and multiple revisions, has focused on authentically representing the protagonists’ inner worlds. With each performance, they carefully consider audience and expert feedback to refine the opera, aiming to create a lasting and influential work. Zou hopes that the tour will attract more domestic and overseas Chinese to theaters, using art as a bridge to convey the warmth and affinity of the motherland.

According to the touring schedule, the opera “Qiaopi” will debut at the Shenzhen Poly Theater on April 24, followed by performances at the Shantou Lin Baixin International Conference Exhibition Center on April 28, the Xiamen Jia Geng Theater on May 2, the Ningbo Grand Theater on May 6, and the Dongguan Yulan Grand Theater on May 15, bringing this heartfelt family letter across mountains and seas to audiences in each diaspora city.

Dongguan, April 23, 2024 — Today marks the 29th "World Book Day" and coincides with the National Public Library Service Promotion Week. The grand opening of the "Fragrance of Books Dongguan · World Walk and Read+" public reading festival was held at the 423-meter tall Min Ying·Guo Mao Center in Dongguan. Several renowned personalities with deep ties to Dongguan also participated in the event. Among them, Lun Zhiqing, a descendant of the famous book collector Lun Ming, issued a reading call from Beijing. Zhao Heng, daughter of the famed translator Yang Yi and contributor to "Easy Read," shared her connection with the bookish charm of Dongguan city. Chen Bei’er, a popular TV host from Hong Kong's TVB, energetically promoted the "Fragrance of Books Dongguan" brand. Chen Jiayi, a young violinist and representative of overseas students who won the 10th China Music Golden Bell Awards, played a beautiful melody on her violin in Austria, echoing the elegant chapter of "Fragrance of Books Dongguan." City University of Hong Kong (Dongguan), Named World’s Most International University, Set to Open in September 2024

On April 16, the Ministry of Education sent a letter to the People’s Government of Guangdong Province, approving the establishment of the Mainland-Hong Kong cooperative education institution with independent legal person status — City University of Hong Kong (Dongguan). It was introduced that a new batch of approximately 72,000 pounds of grey mullet fry, released last October, is currently growing and expected to hit the market by August this year.

In the context of global food safety and sustainable development, marine aquaculture plays a crucial role. Supported by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Guangdong Province, the Guangzhou Institute of Energy Conversion, Chinese Academy of Sciences completed the world’s first semi-submersible wave energy aquaculture platform "Penghu" in June 2019, deployed in the Zhuhai sea area. "Penghu" is 66 meters long, 28 meters wide, and 16 meters high, with an aquaculture water body of 15,000 cubic meters, including wave energy generation of 60 kW, solar energy generation of 60 kW, and energy storage of 500 kWh, equipped with automatic feeding and video monitoring, conducting aquaculture trials of pomfret, tiger grouper, and dragon grouper, as well as integrated marine tourism and fishing experiments.

Notably, since its deployment, "Penghu" has successfully withstood all typhoon attacks, especially the direct hit by the super typhoon "Sura" on September 2, 2023, maintaining stability, secure anchorage, and clear communication throughout the typhoon.

Currently, "Penghu" is conducting large-scale aquaculture trials for the new season. On October 28, 2023, a new batch of approximately 72,000 pounds of grey mullet fry was released. After nearly five months of scientific aquaculture, the grey mullet survived multiple rounds of cold snaps and high waves, with a survival rate exceeding 96% to date, and the total fish weight nearing 300,000 pounds, expected to gradually hit the market for sale in August this year. In addition to providing fish meat, the fish maw can also be processed into high-value-added fish maw products, offering good economic value.

This round of grey mullet aquaculture is Zhuhai City’s first large-scale deep-sea grey mullet aquaculture activity, fundamentally proving that grey mullet can be a suitable species for large-scale marine ranch equipment. Next, "Penghu" will gradually conduct aquaculture demonstrations of high-value fish species such as tuna and red snapper, solidly advancing the effective integration of advanced aquaculture equipment and techniques, contributing to the construction of a modern marine ranch in Guangdong Province.

The deep-sea aquaculture platform technology has been successfully applied in coastal provinces such as Guangdong, Hainan, Guangxi, Fujian, and Zhejiang, conducting series equipment research and development based on different sea conditions, forming three major product series—for mild sea areas, the purely cultured, low-cost "Haiwei series"; for open sea areas, the strong wind and wave-resistant, high-safety "Puseng series" marine fishery factory; and for high-end fishing tourism integration needs, the fully functional "Mintou series" fishing tourism platform.
