You know the thing is I think the pitfalls of Joyce's relationship with Jonathan would be a lot less severe if we knew what they were like before. Like in s1 we have a series of flashbacks of her relationship with Will (partially to make us love Will partly to showcase Joyce's motherhood)

But we don't have that with Jonathan and Joyce. From the jump, we see the parentification. He's helping find her keys, he's making breakfast, he's supposed to know where Will is. And their next big interaction is her admitting that she's checked out as his parent.

But baring one brief moment at the end of the season we don't see them interact outside of this structure. We don't see Joyce interact with Jonathan as her child!

do you think at any point during s5 that mike, will, and jonathan will bring up they buried a body?? or that they went to suzie’s house and met her entire family?? or that they witnessed el blow up a helicopter?? because idk i feel like we need a scene where everyone is just like “ok we need to come up with a plan” and mike just goes “oh hey btw we had to bury a body of an agent that knew where el was since dr. brenner kidnapped her again after she got arrested. the agent died because he was shot during a shootout at mrs. byers house. then we had to go to suzie’s to get help to figure out where el was based on a number we found in the agent’s pen. which dustin, she’s great but her family is a little *points to head and twirls finger to sign that they’re crazy/chaotic* anyways, once we found el she was in the middle of blowing up a helicopter. then dr. brenner proceeded to die again. so yeah just thought you guys should know in case that might be of help in any sort of way.”

something that always gets me about this scene is how this simple conversation was everything will wanted. his eyes glisten, he looks so touched by mike's words and by how mike opens up about will's friendship being different, about how important it is to him. will looks so hopeful because this is what comes first, the fact that they are best friends and will was not feeling things alone, they both had felt like they had lost that special bond. and the way will quickly grabs the painting and packs it completely destroys me, like, that was really all it took from mike for will to get all of his confidence back, to regain confidence and willingness to share his art and what he feels for mike GOD are you kidding me all he wants is to have mike by his side in whatever way he'll have him, it'll always be enough for him.
