“It can hardly be a coincidence that no language on Earth has ever produced the expression “as pretty as an airport.” Airports are ugly. Some are very ugly. Some attain a degree of ugliness that can only be the result of special effort. This ugliness arises because airports are full of people who are tired, cross, and have just discovered that their luggage has landed in Murmansk (Murmansk airport is the only known exception to this otherwise infallible rule), and architects have on the whole tried to reflect this in their designs. They have sought to highlight the tiredness and crossness motif with brutal shapes and nerve-jangling colours, to make effortless the business of separating the traveler for ever from his or her luggage or loved ones, to confuse the traveler with arrows that appear to point at the windows, distant tie racks, or the current position of Ursa Minor in the night sky, and wherever possible to expose the plumbing on the grounds that it is functional, and conceal the location of the departure gates, presumably on the grounds that they are not.”
—  – The Long Dark Teatime of the Soul, by Douglas Adams I find this very fitting given both my friends, family, and my own recent experiences in airports.

The Worst Dressed Sentient Being in the Known Universe for the EIGHTH time running! It’s Zaphod Beeblebrox!
I like to think he wears those awards around sometimes adding to the atrocity. Winning them is positive reinforcement. He becomes stronger by the year.
(it’s eight because I miscounted the ribbons)

I was at a student work showcase for a university today and one of the Urban Planning Projects had a discussion of 3rd spaces, and I went with my mom who hadn't heard of the concept of 3rd spaces, so I now have a question

Hands down, the opening of Long, Dark Teatime of the Soul is the best opening paragraph in English language literature.
I have always thought so, based on rhythm and quality of humor. But as I have become a person who flies regularly, its relevance to the human experience has only become more apparent and so I have found it more and more powerful.

[Book!Dirk Gently voice] I hypnotised your boyfriend. Sorry. He claimed he was a purely logical person not subject to the whims of his unconscious mind, so I hypnotised him. Yeah. I made him throw himself into the canal. He still thinks he's a purely logical creature though. He said he'd meant to jump into the canal all along. He's kind of damp and gross now. But I gave him a towel. Sorry. Can I have some of your lunch?

Arthur squatted and felt the Informational Illusion of the soil and the grass. He ran it through his fingers. The soil seemed heavy and rich, the grass strong. It was hard to avoid the impression that this was a thoroughly delightful place in all respects.

"Science has achieved some wonderful things, of course, but I'd far rather be happy than right any day."
"And are you?"
"No. That's where it all falls down, of course."

I fucked up the very simple sewing project (turn flat sheet into fitted sheet) by not halving the total length difference to cut corners out and now I have a much more tedious, difficult and less satisfying sewing project (sewing the fabric from the corners back in, cutting new corners of the correct size, sewing the new corners together).
