Seeing a lot of black and white "shuro is bad!!!" and "shuro is good!!!" posts. My hot take?

Shuro is a human who acts like a human and is somewhere in the middle like the majority of the population.

Was he a dick to Laios? Yes, and he should've been more honest with him, in a straight forward way, about not wanting to be around him. But also, that shit is TOUGH to do. I've had situations where I've been around someone I can't stand, and it's hard to cut people off or at the very least set boundaries.

I think there's a lot of nuance to it, and putting yourself in one camp or the other doesn't do justice to his character.

Listen, I totally agree that it’s super sad that it turned out Shuro had been annoyed by Laios the whole time he’d considered them to be friends. I get it! I’ve been in his shoes, I was the annoying friend.

But I think it’s also important to not ignore the feelings of Shuro, the one who was being annoyed, at the same time. It’s possible to acknowledge how both people felt without villainizing one of them.

I feel like when it comes to outsiders hearing about a fight two people had, they’ll do this thing where they take the side of whoever they feel most bad for or relate to the most and gang up on/ignore the reasons the other person has and it kind of sucks!

And the point Shuro makes about it being worse that Laios meant no harm is probably because it meant there was no reason for him to tell him to fuck off without looking like an asshole!!

There’s no reason to blame Shuro’s inability to communicate that he wanted space if you’re not going to do the same for Laios’s social blunders.

This... this is a whole different kind of psychic damage here. When nightmares got Marcille, we get to knew that her's biggest fear is outliving her friends. This isn't even canon probably, but look at this. This isn't a "I don't want my friends to die" kind of dream. This is a "I'm terrified of loosing my daughters, of something killing them, and being incapable of stopping it" kind of dream. It's so simple yet it explains perfectly the whole of chilchucks character. He loves, he cares, deeply. But he, or doesn't acknowledges, or doesn't know what to do with that knowledge.

Besides that. Someone had to wake him up after this. Imagine the devastation in this man after he wakes up. He just saw his three little babys murdered corpses (or maybe he saw them die, wich isn't better). He would possibly not talk about it, and that would worry the hell out of the party, because we'll, they see him all down and only one of them knows what he saw. Imagine being the one to pull him from that nightmare. Seeing this man, usually so composed, fuking staring with tears and terror in his eyes to the composes of what you can only assume are his daughters. It would be heartwrenching.

My interpretation of this art (it's from one of the Daydream Hour issues!) is that Chilchuck took the time to prepare the chest, wear the mimic costume, get inside and give his daughters a fun little jumpscare when they opened it, but they were either not impressed, didn't get it, or just wanted the candy, so he just went. Deep fatherly sigh.

Some years ago I'd have disagreed, saying that's ridiculous.

But in recent years it's become clear that it's basically inevitable that being in the entertainment industry does considerable damage to kids, it's just a matter of how much. And it being "horrendous amounts" is nowhere near as rare as you'd want to think. So yes, absolutely agreed.

i think film and television should be banned from using actors younger than 15, and actors under 18 should have heavy restrictions, to encourage filmmakers to seek creative solutions in how to not ruin kids' lives

I think what a lot of people miss about the Toshiro/Laius fight is that Toshiro doesn't even fully mean what he's saying. He's speaking out of anger. He doesn't actually hate Laius. At the end of the series he hasn't spent that much more time with Laius, but he still hugs him and greets him as a friend. He's relieved to see him alive. Because he was Laius' friend the whole time even if he found him annoying at times.

To him Laius is that aggravating friend who doesn't always read the room and can be a bit insensitive or offensive at times even if he's not really that bad of a person fundamentally and despite all that you DO still care about him because he's still your friend. He's not best of friends with Laius and never will be but he still cares about the man for reasons other than just being in love with his sister.
