So, I may get backlash for this and its okay, I have been wanting to say this for a long time.
As an African American and someone who loves anime and manga, I have noticed the racist, African American stereotypes portrayed in anime and manga especially in the 80s and 90s. When I was younger, I didn’t think anything of how black people were portrayed in certain animes, such as Dragon Ball. Now, that I’m older I realize how racist the characters look. Very stereotypical.
So, its 2018 and I’m 20 years old. I’m reading The Promised Neverland. I was very surprised to see how Sister Krone was drawn.
The huge lips is what really surprised me. Like I could have sworn the rest of the world would have been up to date and stop portraying black people with huge lips. But here we are.
Look. I love Sister Krone. I love The Promised Neverland. But Sister Krone’s character could still be just as scary without her extremely big lips that is portrayed in the manga.
I immediately thought of this when I first saw Sister Krone.
This is from an American Cartoon. The hair is similar to Sister Krone’s but here the lips are more exaggerated. Still, I’m sure you get my point.
Now here is her anime appearance:
It seems like the production staff tried to change her appearance, but the stereotype is still there.
Canary has a similar hairstyle and her lips are shown to be full (but there is nothing wrong with that because they are not exaggerated).
Dragonball has this issue too. I couldn’t watch the Red Ribbon Army arc without being annoyed how he was portrayed.
My point is: Manga has had some racist depictions of black characters and I feel that it still shouldn’t be an issue. How hard is it to draw a POC without emphasizing their huge lips?
Now, I have seen lots of anime and manga portray African Americans or POC normally without the use of exagerrated afros or big lips. That’s good. There is no issue with an African American character or POC having full lips. Its when they are exaggerated it becomes racist. For example, there is nothing wrong with Michiko from Michiko to Hatchin. She’s gorgeous
I just feel like with it being 2018 this still shouldn’t be an issue. But that’s just me. This is how I feel.
Sister Krone is still an amazing character and I am excited for The Promised Neverland anime in 2019. I will be watching. I just wanted to address how I felt about her appearance.
That’s all! Thanks for reading to the end. I would love to hear your thoughts on this matter (unless you are horrible and racist, then I don’t want to hear that). I know I missed alot of other examples but I didn’t want to make the post too long.
