The weather in Sri Lanka’s is rather complicated for such a small country. This is due to the fact that the island is affected by two separate monsoons, the presence of which will play a factor in deciding when to go to. On the bright side, this means that there is usually good weather somewhere on the island at most times of the year.
When thinking about the best time to visit Sri Lanka, it’s worth bearing in mind that the basic pattern for weather in Sri Lanka as described below can vary significantly from year to year. It’s also a fact that global warming has disrupted these already complex weather patterns.
Unsurprisingly, the rainfall pattern will be one of the most important factors in your decision of when to go to Sri Lanka.
The main southwest (“Yala”) monsoon brings rain to the west and southwest coasts and hill country from April/May to September (wettest from April to June).
The less severe northeast (“Maha”) monsoon hits the east coast from November to March (wettest from November to December).
There’s also a inter-monsoonal period of unsettled weather preceding the Maha monsoon in October and November. During this time heavy rainfall and thunderstorms can occur anywhere across the island.
The country’s position close to the Equator means that at least one aspect of the weather in Sri Lanka, the temperature, remains fairly constant year-round. Coastal and lowland areas enjoy average daytime temperatures of around 26–30°C. During the hottest part of the day, they can often climb up well into the 30°Cs. Temperatures decrease with altitude, reducing to a temperate 18–22°C in Kandy. In Nuwara Eliya and the highest parts of the island, on average it’s a pleasantly mild 14–17°C. Nights in the hills can be quite chilly, with temperatures sometimes falling close to freezing. Humidity is often another high everywhere. It can rise to a sweltering 90% at times in the southwest, and averages 60 to 80% across the rest of the island.
In practical terms, these weather patterns mean that that when to go to Sri Lanka depends on your route. If you’re heading to the west and south coasts and hill country, December to March is the best time to visit Sri Lanka. If you plan on seeing the east coast, you’ll get the best weather from April/May to September.
In a nutshell, all this variation means that the best time to visit Sri Lanka is utterly intertwined with where on the island you want to go:
Heading to the west and south coasts and hill country? Best time to visit: December to March.
Making your way to the east coast? Best time to visit: April/May to September.
Sri Lanka is an easy country to visit, and with a few tips, you can travel there with ease. And a very budget-friendly country, even if you go nuts on the attractions and tours. We warmly invite you to explore Sri Lanka with us.

What Languages Are Spoken In Sri Lanka?
Sinhalese and Tamil are the two languages that enjoy the status of being official languages in the country.
Sinhalese, One Of The Official Languages Of Sri Lanka One of the official languages of Sri Lanka is Sinhalese. It is the Sinhalese people's native language, who total approximately 16 million. An additional 4 million speak Sinhalese as a second language. This language belongs to the Indo-European language family. Within that category, is part of the Indo-Aryan branch. It is written with the Sinhalese alphabet which descends from the ancient Indian Brahmi writing. Modern-Sinhalese is traced to the Dravidian language as well as Pali and the medieval version of Sinhalese. It has also borrowed words from Tamil, Portuguese, Dutch, and English. The Rodiya community within Sri Lanka speaks a dialect of Sinhalese called Rodiya. It is considered an indication of belonging to a lower-caste in the society.
Tamil, The Second Official Language Of Sri Lanka Within Sri Lanka, there are thought to be approximately 4.7 million Tamil speakers; although worldwide, there are 70 million. The language belongs to the Dravidian language family and is one of the oldest continuously spoken classical languages in the world. Researchers have discovered writings that date back to around 500 BC and its literary works date back to over 2,000 years. Tamil is the second official language in Sri Lanka. However, its use has been relegated to areas in which Tamil-speakers make up the majority of the population. The perceived inequality between Tamils and Sinhalese led to the 1983 to 2009 civil war between the Sri Lankan government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. For those Tamil speakers who do not speak Sinhalese, finding jobs or even doing government paperwork can be difficult.
Creole Languages, Minority Languages Spoken In Sri Lanka Besides the two official languages in Sri Lanka, several minority languages are also spoken. Sri Lankan Creole Malay is the native language of around 46,000 speakers. It is considered an Austronesian language and is made up of a mix of Sinhalese, Tamil, and Malay. The language originally developed with the arrival of Malay immigrants, who came as laborers, soldiers, and exiles of the Dutch and British colonizers during the 1200’s. Written Sri Lankan Malay from the 19th century utilized the Gundul alphabet. Today, however, its use is mainly oral and has been declining as younger Sri Lankan Malays have begun relying on Sinhalese, Tamil, and English for communication.
Another creole language spoken in Sri Lanka is Sri Lankan Portuguese Creole, spoken by only 30 of the 3,400 people of Portuguese descent. These individuals are descendants of the Topazes, Casados, and Portuguese Burgher. This language was the lingua franca of the country between the 16th and 19th centuries.
Foreign Languages Of Sri Lanka The principal foreign language spoken on this island nation is English. It is spoken by around 10% of the population. Its primary use is for business purposes.

“what is Sri Lanka really famous for?” and “why?”
There are all kinds of wonderful things within this small 65,610 km². There’s almost everything in Sri Lanka from a really picturesque coastline to sky scraping mountains which consist different species of animals and diverse plants as well. What we don’t have is menacing volcanoes, which is obviously not needed, for just one volcano can ruin at least a one fifth of our country. Sri Lanka inherits a vast number of endemic animals, indigenous plants and etc. If you refer to the history of Sri Lanka, you can find information about the number of countries who tried to conquer Sri Lanka during the British colonial period and before. (EX: Portugal ) That was also because of the resourcefulness of this small island, a climate suitable for plantation of crops and other facts.( Sri Lanka inherits extremely rare gems such as the blue sapphire, spices such as cinnamon, pepper and other resources such as ivory and many more, and the climate of course varies from province to province, which is also really unique to Sri lanka.) But mainly Sri Lanka is famous because of its proud history. It is one of the only countries which has a written history. There are a lot of historical sites which you can visit in Sri Lanka. For instance, the ancient cities of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa , Sigiriya rock fortress, Temple of the tooth etc. During ancient times Sri Lanka had a technology so complex, that even science cannot comprehend the mysteries behind them. Moreover we have a really wonderful culture as well. For an example, our traditional dancing styles, which are extremely beautiful as well. We also have our unique martial art techniques, which are commonly known as Angampora.Masters of Angampora can literally kill a person just by trampling their shadow! But out of all these, Sri Lanka is famous because of the proud Sri Lankans who live in it. We are really hospitable people, who love to help other. Our women are really lovely , all of them equally, and in our country, there is a really deep love between the husband and wife and an equally deep love between them and their children. We Sri Lankans love children as well…. it is in our blood. So, in conclusion Sri Lanka is famous for its biodiversity, diversity of landscapes, history , culture and its other resources and therefore, Sri Lanka isn’t poor as well. This little pearl of the Indian ocean is way richer than the most of the countries in the world. “There are giant tanks and reservoirs in Sri Lanka. The giant sized tanks and irrigational works are perhaps exclusive for Sri Lanka.” R.L. Brohier- “The God has created the most pleasant landscape of the earth, and it is Sri Lanka.” Juwan Ribeiro- “Sri Lanka is a tiny island and is a paradise.” John D. Marignoli- Sri Lanka is an easy country to visit, and with a few tips, you can travel there with ease. And a very budget-friendly country, even if you go nuts on the attractions and tours. We warmly invite you to explore Sri Lanka with us. www.gogosrilanka.com

Hidden Places in Sri Lanka Sri Lanka is a tropical paradise often visited by tourists. Most of the places that you will be visiting are well-known travel attractions and are quite commercialized despite what you would like to think. However, if you prefer to travel in seclusion, and to discover the roads less traveled. We have compiled a list of the top five hidden attractions that Sri Lanka offers. Waulpane Cave To reach the Waulpane cave also known as the Legendary Rock Cave, drive off Ratnapura. The prehistoric limestone cave is proof of a ten-thousand-year old civilization. The cave is infested with bats and the cave floor covered with bat droppings. You are asked to wear a raincoat to make your way through it and eventually you will arrive at a waterfall which will make your journey wading through bats and bat poo all the more worth it. Shark Point Reef Inexperienced snorkelers, shark point reef a few meters off Nillaveli beach is the place for you to spot blacktip reef sharks. Visiting Shark point will guarantee sightings of this peaceful shark species that don’t attack humans in the water. The ideal snorkeling conditions for this site is within the end of March to late October. Abundance of colorful corals and species of fish create a breathtaking underwater background. Pidurangala Pidurangala is the less famous brother of Sigiriya and is situated few kilometers to the north. The rock formation is home to a monastery during the same period as Sigiriya. Ancient lore implies that the women painted in the Sigiriya frescoes are goddesses on their way to the Pidurangala rock temple to offering flowers. There is a stupa that was built by King Kassapa and the ruins are visible to this day. The climb to the summit is not as easy as Sigiriya because of the steep steps. Don’t be demotivated by the exhaustive climb as the view on top is priceless. Knuckles Mountain Range Named after the shape of the mountain range, trekking the range is something that should not be missed when visiting Sri Lanka. The Knuckles Mountain Range is one of Sri Lanka’s major biodiversity spots with many hidden treasures that uncover as you keep exploring. Imagine verdant mountains with misty summits and breathtaking views all around. There is also a monastery and a hermit who has been residing in the area for over twenty years. Camping under the stars will give you views of an unpolluted sky and a mesmerizing sunrise. Sinharaja Rainforest Sinharaja is the last virgin rainforest of Sri Lanka, It is only 21 km in length, yet the forest is one of Sri Lanka’s major biodiversity centrals. Many of Sri Lanka’s endemic plants, birds and animals could be found within the forest. One can only travel only by foot within the forest, and there are guides you can book to guide your trek/ hike. Being a rainforest, Sinharaja is often prone to unannounced rain, as well as leech infestations. Therefore, take precautions before you leave. Namal Uyana ( Ironwood Forest) The Ironwood forest is the largest in Asia and the Rose Quartz mountain in the middle of the forest is quite a spectacular sight. The forest is over 260 acres in its extent, and while you stroll through you encounter ruins of a monastery that dates back to the time of the first Buddhist king of the island. Sometimes it’s better to venture away from the commonly travelled paths and experience the hidden treasures. That way you can avoid the crowds and truly connect with Sri Lanka’s nature, culture and the hospitable locals. We warmly invite you to explore Sri Lanka with GoGo Sri Lanka Tours and discover the exceptional service, personal attention and share our experience in nature with a very low budget. Adam’s Peak, also known as Sri Pada, is a 2,243m (7,359 ft) mountain in the central highland region of Sri Lanka. Popular for Sri Lankans and tourists alike. The typical climb is started in the middle of the night so you can reach the peak for a breathtaking adams peak sunrise.
For Sri Lankans, Sri Pada is an important pilgrimage site. However, The religious significance of Adam’s Peak greatly depends on who you’re talking to…
Buddhists – claim the footprint mark is the left foot of Buddha Hindus – consider the footprint to belong to none other than Lord Shiva Muslims & Christians – believe it’s Adam’s first step after being exiled from the Garden of Eden.
Whatever your beliefs, waking up in the middle of the night to trek was worthwhile and the sunrise is nothing short of spectacular.

Take a magical speed-boat ride down the beautiful Madu River, a wetland estuary spreading over 900 hectares of which 770 hectares is covered with water and inhabited with 64 islands. The boat ride is a wonderful way to take a closer look at this complex wetland ecosystem; a world heritage site protected by the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands being one of the last wetlands in Sri Lanka to contain a pristine mangrove forest.
Journey past massive mangrove forests, glide under the canopy of the forest tunnels as they curve playfully towards the watercourse. Take in the unique biodiversity of the Madu River and its surrounding islands that boasts of hundreds of birds, plants, fish and animals.
There’s plenty more to do; quench your thirst with a refreshing drink of King Coconut Water and then proceed towards the Buddhist Monastery, see how Kraal fishing is carried out, how Ceylon Cinnamon is peeled and enjoy some ‘fish therapy’ as they playfully nibble your feet at the ‘fish spa’. If it’s later in the evening watch the fishermen in their canoes lighting lanterns on traps that catch prawn and other shellfish. It’s certainly going to be a memorable day-out on the serene waters of the unforgettable Madu River!

Horton Plains National Park
Horton National Park is a ‘food for the soul’ kind of mesmerizing locale. The park is perched in the shadows of the country’s 2nd and 3rd highest mountains, Kirigalpota and Totapola. The place is also termed as world’s end due to its undaunting mysterious views of waterfalls, misted lakes and earthy species of flora and fauna. The national park is actually a plateau and is 2000m high.
It is better to start early in the morning to witness this heavenly place. An array of wildlife such as Samba deers, leopards, wild boars, purple faced langoor; an ideal site for birdwatchers as you may encounter a variety of flying wonders such as bulbul, Ceylon blackbird, Ceylon white eyed arrenga, mountain hawk etc; the epic walk to worlds end(4kms) and Farr Inn hunting lodge.
