Oh yeah @legally-a-bastard the rat
I just received a large brass coin with an emblem of a cartoon rat on it in the mail. It was literally the only thing in the envelope – there wasn't even an explanatory card. I presume this is a reward from one of the several dozen crowdfunded tabletop RPGs I've backed over the course of the past decade, but I genuinely have no recollection which – if any – of them it might be, so it's honestly all a bit sinister.

Ghost Company AU
Uh. So…. I got hit with a… fairly awful plot bunny. You know how they’re called Ghost Company? What if… you know. They’re actually ghosts.
Like… they’re dead.
But the clones are more like standard ghosts, and they can still haunt their armor.
Some refuse to leave their brothers to fight alone, some refuse to abandon their Jedi, and their ashes mix in with the paint that covers the blank white plastoid of their armor, and the armor moves.
Maybe Obi-Wan is also dead. Maybe he’s more of a ghost than a Force-ghost. Maybe he couldn’t join the Force–deep inside the Jedi Temple, there’s a body immersed a tank of bacta. It breathes, it has blood that flows, and yet it will never wake.
This is why Obi-Wan wears clone armor across his torso, why he wears spaulders and vambraces and gloves. Why he has the symbol of the Open Circle fleet painted upon his vambraces. It is not much, but… it is enough.
Because this way no one has to know because this way he can still touch the people around him and they can touch him and maybe those who don’t know do not have to know yet.
They will learn, eventually. The truth will come to light at the end of the war, Obi-Wan thinks. The Jedi do not seek ignorance… but they know that knowledge can be dangerous, and Obi-Wan knows that war is not the time for such knowledge.
He knows that Anakin will blame himself, and he refuses to inflict such pain upon his dearest Padawan.
Obi-Wan does not need to sleep or breath or eat. He will not get injured, he cannot die. He has shed the limitations of his crude matter, and while he is not yet a luminous being in truth, perhaps that is for the best.
The galaxy needs him. The Jedi need him. The clones need him. Obi-Wan will not abandon them in their time of need.
The clones stay with him. He understands, in a way not many do.
Ghost Company is capable… and terrifying. Just like their General, they do not need sleep nor sustenance. They do not tire, they do not feel pain. They cannot die.
They could fade, they could become lost. Perhaps when their ashes run out, if they have no painted armor where they can reside.
Obi-Wan keeps rooms full of paint and an incinerator on board the Negotiator. There are entire racks with painted pieces of armor. They mostly hold the smaller pieces–spaulders, knee-guards, elbow-guards, ankle-guards, the plate that goes over the back of their gloves… but there are also vambraces and helmets.
These are a last resort.
There are some clones in the rest of the GAR who paint their armor with symbols that are not theirs. These are small, and always painted on the inside of the armor. Not everyone understands–why on the inside? Why in the colors of a different battalion? Others see and say nothing. They have also lost a squadmate, a batchmate, a brother, and they also paint their armor with the symbols of who they’ve lost but who have not left them behind.
Not all clones choose to inhabit separate armor. Some stay with their batchmates or members of their squad.
Sometimes, it’s a tug on the chestplate or vambrace or spaulder that means the difference between life and death. That means the difference between the clone joining Them, or staying where they are.
Other times, it’s more subtle. A gentle pressure to stabilize a shaking blaster, a slight correction of a targeting system, a tug at a helmet to look at something.
Not all clones choose to fight after they die.
But enough do.

When they land on the surface to feed, they can become prey for sharks and killer whales

Adults spend years at sea before returning to their breeding grounds

unsung benefit i think a lot of ppl are sleeping on with using the public library is that i think its a great replacement for the dopamine hit some ppl get from online shopping. it kind of fills that niche of reserving something that you then get to anticipate the arrival of and enjoy when it arrives, but without like, the waste and the money.
