♡Basics of Believing: 5 Pillars of Islam + 6 Pillars of Imaan♡ 1/2
Tumblr media Tumblr media
1. Shahada - Proclamation of Faith
It is to believe and say:
I bear witness that there no God [/none worthy of worship] except Allah and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. (Rasul-Allah means Messenger of Allah)
Tumblr media
2. Salaah - The Five Daily Prayers
This is what differentiates a Muslim from a Non-Muslim. The commandments Allah has made obligatory are the acts most beloved to Him.💖
These prayers are made at fixed times according to the positioning of the sun. Details below. One can pray alone but there is more baraka/blessing or reward in praying in congregation/jama'ah.
When it is the time to pray the athaan/call to prayer is called loudly. The person that makes the athaan is called a 'muathin'. After that the waqt/time of prayer is in and if there is a sunnah salaah attached, one can start performing it now and then onto the fard (so namely Fajr/Thuhr/Asr/Magrib/Isha).
If attending a mosque/masjid there will be one person leading the prayer (imam) and the others follow behind him. The 'iqamah' is made to indicate the salaah is about to begin. This is done alone and in congregation.
Benefits include:
Brings you closer to Allah,
Protects from immorality,
Will be able to prostate on the Day of Judgment when Allah instructs us to,
It is the first thing Allah will ask us about on the Day of Qiyaamah (Day of Standing/Judgement Day)

Prayer direction/qibla: One should be facing towards the direction of the Kabbah🕋, the official direction of prayer. So wherever we are we face towards Makka.
In Cape Town that direction is North East. It is different in the world depending on where you are but one can ask a local Muslim, go to the mosque or Google it.♡
Tumblr media
What to wear? One should be dressed modestly. Generally the 'awrah' or parts of the body that should be closed always are different for male and female and only apply to a person once they hit puberty.
Male: From the navel to (over) the knee. Not tight fitting, nor see-through nor wearing gold or pure silk.
Female: From head to toe with face and hands showing. Not tight fitting or see-through. As long as these are in place one can pray like that.
On what/where to pray? It is permissible to pray anywhere except for the graveyard and the bathroom. It is common practice to pray on a prayer mat but that is only to keep the forehead clean during prayer but it is NOT a requirement.♡
One can pray on any clean surface, if there are any obstructions to remove it or brush it away.
What to say during prayer? 1) Iqamah 2) Surah Fatiha 3) Any Surah you want. After you say Allahu Akbar. Refer to video on how to perform the actions.♡
How many units?
Fajr: 2
Thuhr: 4
Asr: 4
Magrib: 3
Isha: 4
Hold on! But before salaah one must be cleansed and in a state of purity. Only in this state is it possible to make salaah. This action and state of being is called 'Wudhu'. Details on how to make it, from my school notes below.♡

3. Fasting - Fasting during the Islamic month of Ramadhan.
Fasting put simply is the staying away from food and drink from Fajr until Magrib. This includes staying away from other things like sexual intimacy between spouses, smoking, swearing, wasting time on things that are not Islamically beneficial, etc.
Ramadhan is the name of a month of the Islamic lunar calendar. It is known by many names. The month of the Quran. The month of Mercy. The month of being charitable. The month of Forgiveness. The month of Fasting, among others.
In this month the most important battles of Islam occurred. The Battle of Badr, The Conquest of Makka, The Conquest of Spain, etc. Fasting is also the only action done purely for the sake of Allah alone. Other acts are to save us from Hellfire but this is for Allah alone an act of obedience, submission and worship.♡♡
♡In the month of Ramadhan, the major shayateen (plural of shaytaan a.k.a the BAD jinn. The offspring of the devil/Iblees) are chained up, doors of Jahannam(Hell) are closed and the doors of Jannah(Heaven) are wide open. The mercy of Allah is immensely more.
Tumblr media
Ramadhan is divided into 3 parts.
The 1st 10 days are the days of obtaining the MERCY of Allah.
The 2nd 10 days are the days of receiving the FORGIVENESS of Allah.
The 3rd 10 days are to BE SAVED FROM THE FIRE OF JAHANNAM.
(So it goes in degrees of importance I'd say and you can't move onto the next step without obtaining the previous so to speak.)
The most important of all of this is Laylatul Qadr. The night of Power. The night of 'Qadr' or Decree. It is found in one of the odd nights of the last 10 days of Ramadhan.♡
It is said if one is to engage in repentance on this night, all their previous sins will be forgiven. However no one will enter paradise on their deeds alone so we implore Allah to His mercy. Through it alone do we enter Jannah. So we ask Him to forgive us and have mercy on us so we are saved from Hellfire.♡
Allah says in the Qur'an, “The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months,” (Qur'an, 97:3). The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Whoever prays on Laylatul Qadr out of faith and sincerity, shall have all their past sins forgiven,” (Hadith, Bukhari and Muslim)
♡So how does fasting work? Eating is permitted until the athaan of Fajr sounds and only permitted again when the athaan for Magrib sounds. (Following the radio if you can't hear a mosque is allowed but use discretion and look at a calendar too♡)
Before eating at suhoor(morning meal before fasting) make an intention(niyyah) to fast for the sake of Ramadhan. So something like:
'I intend to fast to the fard/compulsory fast of Ramadhan and this is for the sake of Allah'.
*There are actual duas (verbal prayers) but I do not want to share anything that isn't STRICTLY from Quran or sunnah.♡
Just before one breaks the fast to eat the night meal (iftar) make an intention that you have fasted for the sake of Allah and that He may accept, ameen. A niyyah can be silent or just said to oneself softly.
♡Please refer to Surah Baqarah, verses 183-184 (2:183-184) for what Allah says about fasting.♡
4. Zakah - Compulsory Charity
Zakah is given once a year in the 1st month of the Islamic calendar, 'Muharram'. The amount to be given in this month is a percentage of your savings that has been lying dormant/untouched for at least a year. 2.5% of one's savings/income must go to charity.
This must be given by the last day of Muharram. Who can we give it to? You can give it to a mosque, an Islamic non-profit or organisation like SANZAF or you can give it directly to anyone who qualifies for it. There is a criteria of who is valid to receive zakah.
Tumblr media
It is currently 2 Ramadhan 1444* corresponding with 25th March 2023. Here is an Islamic Calendar.
There is also voluntary charity called 'sadaqah'. This can be given anytime and is a means of purifying one's income, a way to bring baraka into your life. Allah loves those who are consistent. So even giving a little constantly is dearly loved by Him.♡
5. Hajj - Pilgrimage to Makka.
Hajj is the last and final pillar of Islam. It is obligatory on every Muslim able, physically/financially by the means to perform it. Hajj occurs in the last month of the year, Thul-Hijjah.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
It is a series of events that must be done in a certain order and it is promised that one who has performed Hajj, his whole life's previous sins get wiped out. That's why everyone wants to go for Hajj again and again.😆🤭
It's all in all like a reenactment of a few different occurrences put together as Allah prescribed for us to do. One is the sa'ee between Mount Safa and Mount Marwa. That is inspired by when Allah instructed Nabi Ibrahim/ Prophet Abraham to leave his wife Hajar and leave her and their new born child, Ismaeel there. That barron place later became Makka.
She had placed down her baby to look for any life and movement, running from one mountain (Safa) to the other (Marwa) 7 times and quickly.
The other would be when Nabi Ibrahim was instructed by Allah to sacrifice his son and the shaytaan tried to deter them from doing so but they pelted shaytaan with stones and this is where the pelting of the Jamarat comes from.
As well as the slaughtering of a sheep as when Allah replaced Ismaeel under the blade with a sheep. All of it is related.🥰
It's very precise and requires accurate detail but I've linked the best video I can find that shows what actually goes on.♡ I've yet to go for Hajj but I've made my niyyah and want to perform it with my future husband Insha Allah, if Allah wills.
