TIA, or "This Is Africa" was told to me almost daily from the natives of Rwanda and Uganda. It took a few weeks for that phrase to really mean something, but now I feel like I understand where they are coming from. Their way of life is just uniquely different from ours. They embody a rich culture, unlike anything I have experienced before.

This was shot on location in Rwanda (3 weeks of July 2015) and Uganda (2 weeks of December 2016)

Currently, I am in the country of Rwanda. I was hired to film a documentary, and also a series of events. Days prior to leaving the country, my employer calls and says, "I just purchased a $900 drone. This will be great!" I had never used a drone in my life, and he didn't understand the complexities of one. When we landed in Rwanda, the drone was confiscated. My employer pleaded with the Chief Marshall, and proclaimed he hired an 'expert' to fly it. When they think of drones, it is the one with missiles, therefore any 'drone' in the country is highly illegal. After pulling some strings, the drone arrived 4 days after our arrival. The DAY OF THE EVENT. Thinking I would originally have had a few days to try to even understand its capabilities and how to work it, my blood pressure was off the roof. 6 hours to the event!

I figured out out how to calibrate and set up after a few hours, after waiting painfully for the slow internet here to launch tutorials. I then tried to practice flying for the first time, and the Chief Marshall, who had military watching from a distance, said that I can't fly it without police. I then get escorted to a field by soldiers with AK-47s to watch me as I practice. Freaking out, thinking they would immediately know that I was no expert, I started to panic. I re-read the tutorial on the way there. STEP 9: DO NOT PANIC. Ok, thanks. I set up, calibrated, and told myself years of playing video games would pay off. Thankfully, it DID. No time for GPS, all manual fun!

For more reasons than I can count, some would say I was crazy to teach myself about how to use a drone, calibrate, and fly in foreign territory over thousands of people within 6 hours. But golly, I did, and I am so happy that the strength and quick thinking needed was given to me. What an incredible experience. I can't wait to utilize this for the rest of the trip! Enjoy my first ever two flights, shot on the same day.

Also a fun fact, the land on the other side of the water is the Dominican Republic of the Congo! Border town.
