Almost forgot to post Future Dimitri!!! Yup. That’s a Dimileth baby ;).

I’ve been thinking about Azure Moon recently, and it’s reception both good and bad.

As has been said multiple times on this blog, the route is founded on the concept of a Righteous King under Heaven’s Mandate. In short, when it comes to Dimitri vs. Edelgard, it’s not a case of the game being morally gray or anything. It’s pretty clear cut. As the Hegemon, Edelgard is meant to represent tyranny and oppression while Dimitri, the Righteous King, is supposed to be a king that puts his people first and bring about justice to tyrants.

When it comes to the good reception of Azure Moon, I feel it’s the idea that it’s meant to represent justice that plays a big role in it.

Silver Snow is my favorite route in the game, as I really like how it stresses how much responsibility a leader must bear and how despite how hard it is, Byleth ultimately embraces it. They accept their duty to help guide the people. But I feel the story loses some of it’s impact when you look over the entire game. It presents Edelgard as a more morally gray character who is ultimately misguided, and does so in order to make fighting her all the more heartbreaking. Which is fine in a vacuum, but the Nintendo Dream interview made it clear we were supposed to compare notes from the different stories and the realities of Edelgard’s war are largely downplayed in order to keep us sympathetic to her.

Then there’s Azure Moon. It’s literally a different story, one where Dimitri grows into being the Righteous king through our help. The person who will bring Edelgard to justice, and for that to happen we need to know the charges against her. Dimitri is the one person who will speak out against Edelgard’s supposed ideals, in addition to holding those lives snuffed in pursuit of them against her. There’s no excuses, no lies, no scapegoats, the route tears all those away and Edelgard is just left another would-be dictator trying to take over the world.

It’s the one route that actually wants to tackle the reality of what’s happening rather than the duties of leadership, reaching out for the truth, or our fall from grace into ignorance. That’s why it gets such a strong positive reaction.

But I feel this ultimately relates to why some people trash the route as much as they do. To them, it’s not a case of justice being served. It’s a case of the game taking a “morally complex” situation and turning it into what I’ve seen described as “disgustingly black and white.” That Edelgard’s is a villain, not a tragic anti-hero/anti-villain she is in other routes, one whose ideals aren’t bad but rather it’s how she goes about them. It ultimately comes down to it not being what they want out of the game like so many complaints about Fates.
