Before I head to bed, I wanted to point out that Atem has a bit of survivor's guilt. I don't think I've ever posted this headcanon before, but in all my verses that are post series or DSOD, the survivor's guilt is real. And depending on whether or not I include his past with a certain priest, it's even worse because of those past attachments he has yet to let go of. And it complicates his relationships with people --- be it friends or potential romantic partners. It's hard to make new connections when half of your heart is still living in the past.

I always think of that scene in the Mum/my Returns when Anaks/unamun and Nef/atiri are seeing flashbacks from the past. Imhotep's magic lulls them both back into a scene that tells how certain events shaped their current future. It's kind of the same with Atem. He could be sitting down reading a book but if something reminds him of his old home, he might tune out and find himself transported briefly into an old memory. Not physically, but just... in his head. And it's distracting --- all of these things. It's preventing him from letting go and as a result, he's having difficulty moving on.

And part of that is guilt. In most verses, its just the guilt of losing people in his kingdom or people that died for him the day Thief King attacked. In other verses, he looks at Kaiba ( or anyone who might resemble someone from his past ) and feels a deep longing or regret because he remembers things they know nothing about. They weren't there. These are all reincarnations. The only exception most times is Kaiba who he can't or refuses to acknowledge as the priest. He is but he isn't and that's the main one that screws with his head. We haven't done enough with Mahad for me to truly know if it would affect him in the same manner if they were romantically involved. But yeah.

So Atem's not really disinterested in people, but he's distant and wary by default. Most of his issues stem from anxiety and just trying to make the most of his second chance. PTSD, survivor's guilt, ect. All of that is why he acts the way that he acts, although he can often make it for the regality people are accustomed to seeing.

Atem looked up from his drink, wondering if he had zoned out again. It wasn't that he did it on purpose, or that he wasn't interested in what she had been up to in the last two years that he was 'missing'. He just found himself locked in his own head; a headspace constantly torn between wanting a second chance and feeling out of place here. It was a headspace he slipped into with ease, various conversations and triggers seemingly lulling him into it without him having realized it.

It was a delayed reaction but eventually he came to, taking a sip of his frozen drink. There was no helping him, and even if he had some inkling of how to rid himself of the feeling, he knew it was likely a thing only he could do of his own accord.

❝I am fine, Anzu.❞ And there's a pause, because he truly does not wish to seem ungrateful or rude. That is rarely his intention and yet as of late, he was having difficulty expressing himself without people taking it the wrong way. It wasn't that he was unwilling to accept help. As he had learned through Yugi the first time around, it was okay to ask for help when needed. But what kind of aid could one possibly receive for issues of the mind? If anything, he probably needed a licensed therapist but even he knew that was off the table. Who would ever believe he was thousands of years old with a slew of past trauma?

❝For what it's worth, I am not being dismissive of your offer or even too proud for once. However, I do not think you can help me. My issues these days are all rooted in my overall mental health. I suppose… I simply have my good days and bad ones. There is NO QUICK FIX for that.❞ He sipped his drink, feeling anxious all of a sudden. However, he brushed it off in favor of redirecting the topic back to her. ❝Anyway, you were saying something about a trip overseas? Rome was it?❞

basically i got thinking abt like. you know when you watch a movie, or read a book, and characters go into a room or they do a particular thing together, and you just KNOW it’s building up to something, and it could be literally anything, from a kiss to a murder, but SOMETHING will DEFINITELY happen??? yeah. this is a love-letter to those glorious scenes! i hope you all enjoy!

[ ROAD TRIP ]: the sender and receiver embark on a road trip together; the purpose could be anything at all, but what’s important is that the journey lasts at least several hours. additionally, the sender and receiver are the only people in the car!

[ BARED SOULS ]: the sender and receiver spontaneously go skinny dipping together in the middle of the night while visiting an isolated lake. go wild! maybe the sender finds the receiver already skinny dipping, maybe it’s the other way round, who knows! you do! maybe.

[ NIGHT-TIME STROLLS ]: the sender decides to walk the receiver home from an event late one night. and it’s very late; so late that they might as well be the only people left in the world. it’s just them and the quiet night sky, and conversations of all kinds are easy to come by.

[ TOP OF THE WORLD ]: one of the muses finds the other on the roof-top in the middle of the night. neither of them want to sleep, and so they sit together for the remainder of the night until the sun comes up, content to sit and talk and exist with each other.

[ STEPPING BACK ]: while they’re both attending a particularly lively and crowded party, both muses, craving a moment of peace and fresh air, accidentally go to the same balcony. unwilling to leave, they sit together, and begin to talk as the party spins on behind their backs.

[ NO VACANCIES ]: both characters are in a position where they must share a hotel room together; not so bad, until they realize the only room left has one bed and no sofa in it. paired with a carpet that not even a worst enemy would be subjected to, the two must share the bed.

[ WRONG ROOM ]: after a long day, and a hotel with many vacancies, the two muses part ways to go to bed. only, one of them ends up waking in the middle of the night, and shows up at the other’s doorstep, knocking and asking to come in, for reasons unknown to the other muse.

[ NIGHT-INGALE ]: after being badly beaten, one muse shows up on the other muse’s doorstep, pleading for help. the other obliges, brings them in and gently cleans their wounds, bandaging them up, helping them as much as they can while quiet confessions and gentle pleas happen. basically, angst and emotion and hurt and comfort, and it’s DELICIOUS–

[ VISITING HOURS ]: upon waking in a hospital bed, one of the muses turns their head, and finds the other sleeping in an uncomfortable chair by their bedside.
