Body painting questionnaire and answers 2 - Sanna Forslund (Austria)
As part of a growing questionnaire database which we are preparing for a number of future articles in a local magazine; we have asked a few artists and models on their insight, advise, and past experiences related to body painting.
Below is our second willing participant:
Q1. How did you find out about body painting?
A1.  I read an article about the World Body Painting Festival in Austria, and it was the first time I encountered body paint on this level, and I thought it sounded amazing. And I decided I wanted to be a part of it.
Q2. What made you decide on becoming a body painting model?
A2.  I signed up to be a model at the World Body Painting Festival, and then I went there and I was hooked. It was a great way of expressing creativity.
Tumblr media
Q3. Who do you normally work with?
A3.  I'm normally a pastry chef, making chocolate desserts and pralines.
Q4. What has been the biggest event you have attended and what overall design did you enter with??
A4.  Modelling for special effects at the World Body Painting Festival, with lots of glue and heavy head pieces, we came fourth so it was a great competition.
Tumblr media
Q5. How long does a body paint session normally take?
A5. It really depends on the event, but I would say about six to seven hours.
Q6. How does it feel to be standing there for so long while the work is being built around you and on you?
A6.  it’s a very unique experience and you have to ignore a lot of your body's feelings. I usually tell people that it is a lot harder than it looks, it's not only standing still you are constantly working together with the artist to make the painting go as smoothly as possible.
Tumblr media
Q7. What is your favourite type of face/body painting designs?
A7.  I love the very colourful designs, with a lot of abstract elements.
Q8. What equipment/clothing is used to cover up sensitive areas if at all?
A8.  A G or C-string, and possible nipple cover.
Tumblr media
Q9. If equipment or props are used at all, how is it decided?
A9.  During competitions it's always the artist’s vision in focus, so they usually have some clothing in mind when you start working with them.
Q10.  Any advice for anyone else wanting to try it?
A10.  Don't tense your body; try to stand with your knees a bit bent. Breathe normally and most importantly communicate with your artist! And enjoy the creativity going on!

Christmas message from us at the association
We would like to thank Sam Santiago and her team for an amazing Christmas piece of art with a few words from them:
Christmas for me is a time to remember all the good times that we have had through the years with our family and friends. And I decided to do this design for different reasons.
#1 it something different it is not your classic painting of the Christmas tree/decoration, nut cracker, snow etc....
Tumblr media
#2 I use to love Dr.Seuss creations when I was a child and I still do.  And the same way with Nightmare before Christmas and since the world of both is visually a like I decided to do a design based on 2 of my favourite childhood characters/ themes for Christmas.  The Grinch and Nightmare before Christmas have become timeless classic for this season. But since I wanted to keep the design coherent and simple I decided to use the cat in the hat since it was Dr. Seuss favourite character and one of the most famous with his iconic hat!  And some of the Dr. Seuss world and Christmas town used as part of the backgrounds with jack Skeleton's face. So both worlds could be easy recognizing just with one look.  As same with the hat in which I incorporated some of sally's character dress on one side.
Tumblr media
#3 I know that a lot of people feel like me when it comes to those Characters and I wanted to be able to make them smile once they see my painting. And remind them a little about those child dreams! How much we love those stories! And how much we used to want being able to be part of those worlds!
Tumblr media
And like I said! Christmas it's a time to enjoy with your family, share and cherish all those memories....so... Merry Christmas!

Body painting questionnaire and answers 1 - Laura J Draycon (UK)
As part of a growing questionnaire database which we are preparing for a number of future articles in a local magazine; we have asked a few artists and models on their insight, advise, and past experiences related to body painting.
Below is our first willing participant:
Q1. How did you find out about body painting?
A1.  I first got into body paint modelling by visiting Paintopia for research for my degree. I was amazed by the artwork on display, and volunteered as a model for one of the artists for torso paint. I was hooked
Q2. What made you decide on becoming a body painting model?
A2.  I had done some modelling for a life drawing class and this seemed like a natural progression for me.
Q3. Who do you normally work with?
A3.  I work with any artist who has a vision they want to portray on the human body. I am the Model Co-ordinator for the UK Body painting League, so I am lucky to work with some amazing artists. I have modelled for many artists both experienced and novice. I love encouraging new painters to try the art form and seeing their reactions to their artworks on me is priceless.
Q4. What has been the biggest event you have attended and what overall design did you enter with??
A4.  I am due to attend the Paintopia event this May which will be my largest event, there is a Vintage theme so I am looking forward to seeing the designs the artists come up with. My largest to date would be a UV event held in a night club. We got some amazing effects with all the backlights. There were approx 1500 people there that night. My design was 60's Psycodelia.
Q5. How long does a body paint session normally take?
A5.  Full body paint can take up to 8 hours but it depends on the intricacy of the artists design.
Q6. How does it feel to be standing there for so long while the work is being built around you and on you?
A6. I love the whole process of the paint, including the time spent actually being painted. It is an amazing experience being transformed. The artists are always mindful of my comfort; we take breaks, chat, eat cake and generally enjoy spending time together creating something.
Q7. What is your favourite type of face/body painting designs?
A7.  Personally I love designs which embrace the feminine form, an artist who has taken the time to design something which truly uses the shape of the body to enhance the design. It can
Q8. What equipment/clothing is used to cover up sensitive areas if at all?
A8.  There are a few options for covering sensitive areas; my preferred method is to use a latex cover. These are applied with latex prosthetic glue and stay secure and comfortable all day. I prefer these as they are almost invisible once painted and it means there are no unsightly straps to distract the viewer from the artwork itself. I am also happy to wear a nude seamless thong. Nipple covers are needed for public displays of the work. Personally I prefer not to use these as the artist has chosen the human form as their canvas, so I am happy for them to use exactly that.
Q9. If equipment or props are used at all, how is it decided?
A9.  It is entirely up to the model and artist together to decide what is more comfortable and suitable for the artwork. As artists and models we have to respect any censorship laws put in place wherever the art is intended to be shown.
Q10.  Any advice for anyone else wanting to try it?
A10.  I would say to anybody either comfortable with their body or those wanting to learn more about the art form and themselves to try it. It can be incredibly liberating, gives you a chance to view your body in a different way and is so much fun to be involved in. The UK Body painting League is all about encouraging the art form and those interested in it, so it is a great place to start. All are welcome; we want to "Paint the World".

During our first festival in 2013 we had a couple of friends enter with a unique twist; they arrived and presented the rarely seen female ghost rider, fully kitted with leathers and Harley in tow.

While recruiting volunteers for the first Gibraltar body paint festival, we had everyone who applied paired off with at least one artist during the three days.  One small hiccup came on the last day when Lillian Hopman's model arrived and she informed us that her 18th b-day was the week after the festival but had brought her mum for parent consent. unfortunately we had to refuse the original plans for the design and lack of coverings; but as all good artists know, inspirations hits at the most random times and the above photos are the result of this final wedding inspired design.

During our first festival, we were lucky enough to have artist Lillian Hopman be part of the event, unluckily the model we had paired with her had to cancel the same morning of the event.
In a strange turn of event, we had a lady who was getting her bely painted and had brought a friend as babysitter to look after her young daughter, while she was busy.  after an hour or so of waiting Lillian just walks up to her and puts her arm on the babysitter's shoulder and says "take your things off I'm going to paint you".
These are those results to the annoyance of the lady trying to get her belly painted while now also keeping an eye on her daughter and not her friend nude from head to toe.

After a painstakingly few months of trying to get the Gibraltar body painting Association up and running and convincing the higher ups about the art form, we managed to put on our first festival during April 2013.
Along with that we were lucky enough to have American Artist Pashur work with the then Miss Gibraltar 2012.
