Ghost gets booed. The band toured extensively to promote their first record, often supporting other bands already established and respected within the rock/metal genre – Paradise Lost, In Flames or Trivium to name a few. In a company like this, Ghost, who have been outsiders on the metal scene since day one, were sometimes met with hurdles and challenges. To put it simply, not everyone liked or ‘understood’ them. Metal Hammer’s review a show in Hamburg, Germany late November 2011 makes note that “already during the first song beer cups fly out from the audience” and “most of the applause the Swedes get is when they announce their last song.” A few days and cities later, another reviewer writes: “it looks even worse today than in Munich: restrained applause is joined by booing and extended middle fingers.” Later, someone else refers to Ghost as “Powerwolf for the poor” and complains about Papa’s “exaggeratedly theatrical, sometimes almost ridiculous movements.” Another review ends with a condescending “one has to seriously wonder who put them on the bill in the first place.” Tobias himself recalled one of their early shows in the January 2017 issue of Kerrang magazine as such: “We were supporting Paradise Lost in Germany. It was an 800-capacity club and 799 of them hated us. I’ve never faced a group that was so uniform in their rudeness. In between the songs they were telling us to fuck off and go home.” Oh, how the tables have turned.
It’s still October, so my Opus era retrospective continues.. here’s one of my fav moments - Papa doing the growly bit in Ritual, from a show in Manchester in 2011. Nowadays the part is heavily enhanced by a backing track, but early on it was all Papa.
