Rewatching New Who for the first time in probably 15 years is making me want to rewatch Classic Who

Two matching Miss Sherlock papercuts I created for @gardnerhill as part of the latest Holmestice round. I actually still hadn't seen the show when I signed up and then thought, seriously how? Absolutely fell in love with it and I wanted to do something featuring four of the main characters. I used two pages from The Adventures (translated by Ken Nobuhara) and painted backgrounds for contrast. Did you know that when A Study in Scarlet reached Japan a decade after being first published, it was adapted to a Japanese setting rather than simply translated? Me neither!

Just doing some digital tidying and found all my old BSJ comics which have never made it onto here so there you go, almost 10 years late :)

My winter 22 Holmestice gift for @fleetsparrow, whose Woman in Green prompt really inspired me. Worked in black and white, coloured digitally to match the slightly gaudy lobby cards for the film.

My Whitehead & Pickering Holmestice (or rather Spode Italian) piece for @educatedinyellow, whom I was so overjoyed to create for! A little experiment in loosening my colouring style and incorporating papercut elements into more detailed illustrations. I adore this version of the two of them, they have such great chemistry and a lovely relationship.

Such amazing gifts this round, love this Irregulars piece by Biscia and of course this incredible series of illustrations being my breathtaking gift from @strampunch​. This story by @sanspatronymic​ was delightfully domestic, and this “Coules-verse” tale of vegetable mischief by @jeremys-come-to-bed-eyes was such a clever little case. Holly also wrote me a gorgeous unexpected treat. Such a pleasure to take part in this round, now off to have a look at all the other pieces I missed!

I had the opportunity to rework this (very) old comic (nine years!!!!) for the latest issue of The Watsonian, who are always such darlings.

I know it’s very tempting to update old art and refresh things, especially after almost a decade, but it easily turns into a never ending process that I frankly do not have the energy for. One of the major reasons I haven’t managed to compile all these little guys in a proper volume (although you can have a leisurely browse online) is that I feel like my perspective as a reader, and artist, has so dramatically changed within those past few years that I’m not sure that this is the content I’d still like to create or reprint. I’ve always put Holmes and Watson’s deep yet complicated relationship at the heart of these pieces, but sometimes it feels to me that they appear more annoyed with each other than what I would like to see depicted in my own work. I would prefer to bring the focus back on the domestic and romantic aspect of the stories, which I guess is already present in those comics but not necessary as much as I would like to have portrayed it. Anyway, thoughts. Always a pleasure to be able to revisit old favourites and give them new life, hopefully more gay stuff in the future.

I was wondering if you would ever consider putting together a PDF of your comics (and adding signatures to each of the old ones because they tend to not have them and people like to take them). It would be really awesome to be able to buy a comic book with your comics in them. I'll even get a cover for it myself if there is a PDF of the comics themselves available.

Yes! I have been thinking about doing this for ages and put it up for a couple of quid on gumroad, so maybe if there’s enough interest that is something I will… make time for… this year? All them comics are archived on a separate blog (@holmescomics) for easier browsing though.
