I think Needles having to explain that he's something to be scared of is such a clever thing. Humanity is only being introduced to the concept of fears (entities) in this universe. None of the victims so far have really felt fear yet. Their reaction is of a child not familiar with the concept of irrational fear - curiosity. They look for rational explanations and accept all paranormal happenings as a sequence of life. It's not us, the audience, who is being introduced to new characters, it's their universe who's being introduced to a new reality
