And, because I don't know when I'll get another excuse to rant about it: The fandom's... enthusiasm about the valonqar prophecy always creeped me out. A bunch of people constantly calling out the show for both real and perceived sexism going "Boy I can't wait for Jaime to complete his redemption arc by murdering his EVIL CHEATING BITCH WHORE sister in an extremely brutal way!"

Anyway, I picked the white walker one. Along with being anticlimactic, it's a symptom of one of the real problems with the show: No matter how much they deviated beforehand, when it's time to conclude something (a character arc, a storyline, etc.), the showrunners always forced it back to something that resembles what happened in the books (or, with the post-book seasons, what GRRM plans to have happen in the books) no matter how jarring or nonsensical the results are. I'd go into more detail, but honestly with this example it's a lot of speculation on my part that I don't want to present as absolute fact. If anyone cares I'll talk about it in a future post.

Wheeljack's my second favorite Transformer. I'm currently up to Transformers Prime in my big Transformers watch and am a little pissed they turned him into a generic badass, so this is nice to see.

I think it's less the swearing on its own and more that he swears in the same way that all characters in a Warren Ellis story do, essentially giving them all the same voice. Kind of like how all Joss Whedon characters have the same quippy way of talking.

It didn't bother me too much in Castlevania, but I remember it getting on my nerves back when I read Transmetroplitan. After the tenth time a character went "Say something nice about Spider Jerusalem? I'd rather [long, detailed, and specific gross thing]." I was thinking okay, I get it, you're sooo punk rock, Ellis.

I know that there are a fair few who don't like Death's dialogue in the Castlevania show, but between Malcolm Mcdowell's delivery and the shear contrast with the prior much more erudite villains in the show makes him really entertaining?

I'm not sure about "overplayed", but "Big Shot" always sounded like a wife beater anthem to me. Even the beat makes it sound like it's meant to synchronize with physical blows. Also not a fan of "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant" because it goes on fucking forever. I'd change to a different station, listen to a few songs, then change back and Billy Joel's still singing about their Italian reeeeeeeestauraaaaaant. But other than that I love Billy Joel. I'd say this goes back to the old slasher movies. When you watch a Freddy or Jason or whoever flick, be honest: You're there to watch them kill people in scary, stylish, or at least memorable ways. You're not really sympathizing with them, but you are rooting for them until the last five minutes when the final girl or Tommy Jarvis takes them out until the next movie.

The difference between them and Jigsaw is that while supernatural killers aren't real and those movies don't try to make you think "Maybe Freddy has a point, maybe he is her boyfriend now," Jigsaw's more like your average real life serial killer only with a really elaborate killing method. You're still watching the movies to see him murder people, but if they ask you seriously consider if he's onto something with his reasoning it'll get all weird.

Granted, I've never watched a Saw movie. I don't know how much of them have the writers simping for Jigsaw or how much of it is a dumbass audience assuming the deluded murderer villain is telling the truth and speaking for the writers because an anime protagonist didn't appear and yell "You're wrong, Jigsaw! Friendship!" But, if the tie-in game I saw Jerma stream one time is anything to go by, there is some of the former in them.

Yeaaah, definitely a choice.

Like how Don't Breathe 2 portrayed the villain from the first film as a protective antihero trying to rescue his adopted daughter... carefully ignoring that the plot of the first film involved some burglar's discovering that said villain kidnapped a woman who had killed his original daughter, and was keeping her locked in his basement to "make a replacement".

Generally the rule of thumb is, when having overtly evil characters at the lead, is to either have them faced off against people who are worse in some way (see any given Punisher Max story, for example) OR have the plot involve their eventual downfall by hubris, a heroic antagonist or something.

The fact that Saw X's plot apparently involves John Kramer (the trap dude) going to Mexico to cure the cancer that caused his murder spree in the first place... only to find upon returning to the US that they scammed him, leading to his kidnapping the doctors and sticking them in various devices for revenge. While there could be an argument that their preying on sick and desperate people (their business model from the trailers seemingly being scamming people with inoperable cancer, pretending to operate on them and then pocketing the money) has some level of catharsis for the audience (as in the amusement of the scammers targeting the "wrong guy"), it's still just... mean spirited.

But then, the Saw, Hostel etc. franchises were never really my bag, in all honesty. Not fun to watch, in my opinion, a left over from that period in the early 2000s when horror moved away from slasher movies and occasionally special effects heavy haunted house film to being just kinda mean gory films that either were commenting on the US' use of torture in the war on terror in a negative light (I believe that there's a Michael Sheen/Samuel L Jackson film in this vein somewhere) or ones that seemed like borderline propaganda designed to desensitise people.

Today I learned that Don Bluth was going to make an adult-leaning adaptation of Dracula back in 2009, but it ultimately fell apart. Aw man.

Although judging from the article Joss Whedon was apparently due to write the script, so like the potential Whedon Wonder Woman movie from around that period, probably dodged a bullet there also.
