Something that I am just so passionate about is the symbolism behind the three Chemies that Valvarad resonates with starting in episode 21 of Gotchard.
We've got DaiOhni (6), Jyamatanoorochi (8), and Angelead (4).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Starting off with DaiOhni, it's based on King Enma / Enma Dai-O, a figure known in Buddhism as a judge of souls, punishing evil and rewarding good.
Jyamatanoorochi is based on a portmanteau of Jama (to obstruct) and Yamata no Orochi, the great eight-headed dragon-demon.
And Angelead is, well, an Angel, but also a guide (hence the big arrow sign in its hand).
So when we put these together, we get something like:
"Uphold justice, obstruct evil, follow the righteous path"
Makes sense that they'd resonate with a guy as passionate about virtuous ideals as Spanner is!
And it's just really cool how even though these could have been representative of Spanner's unwillingness to let go of his grief and anger, especially since most of them have to do with the afterlife, and the one that doesn't is based on a raging demon... the secondary aspects added to make them Chemies and not just totally on-the-nose references change it a bit.
I feel like it's instead representative of how what he's been through is pushing him to overcome the challenges before him, leading him onwards with new purpose.
The grief is still there--his primary form is still half Machwheel, half King of the Dead--but it's tempered by the others, ignited into a drive to move forward in his parent's memory, rather than be trapped by the past.

So l've been watching Kamen Rider Agito, and it turns out the Mysterious Letter in An Unknown Language that can only be read with Psychic Powers is actually written in English.
I mean, with a very fanciful font, but still!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The letter reads:
In the beginning was Theos. Theos divided the light from the darkness, the day from the night, the firmament from the earth, the land from the sea. Thus the world was finished. And Theos created the Els and the Malaks, so he created animals in the image of Malakhs, men in his own image. The world was the paradise in those days. Before long men were multiply and replenished the Earth. Men said, our shape is of Theos, so we are superior to Malakhs And Els. We shall have dominion over animals after the likeness of Malakhs and make them our cattle. Malakhs said, Behold, men have made animals their cattle and had Dominion over them: let us make men cattle and have Dominion Over them. Otherwise destroy Them. So the battle between Malaks and men began. Each was Two hundred million and the battle continued in Forty Years.

Ok so like. Everyone and their grandmother who watches Gotchard knows that Kurogane Spanner thinks Chemies are "just tools". Like, he just straight up says it, here it is, badda bing
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But like. And hear me out on this one. I think this is more complicated than just "oh the rival character is a bastard who thinks puppies don't have feelings and therefore it's okay to go around kicking them all day"
Because I think Spanner thinks of himself as "just a tool" too.
(I am physically incapable of writing a post that doesn't get long so the rest of this is going under the cut. Spoilers up to episode 14)
I mean, just from a design standpoint, the guy has a wrench for a face half the time. There's definitely something to be said for Valvarad's mask being representative of how Spanner presents himself, or even thinks about himself (especially since Spanner created the Valvarad suit single-handedly, apparently????)
Tumblr media
Also just like. The guy's first name. Is freaking Spanner.
Like, one of these??? And that's just his name???
Tumblr media
Like I mean a bit on the nose but alright. Also, if he picked that name himself (and with a name like that, it seems likely). What motivated that. I simply must know.
(Diversity win! Local Trans Man absolutely hated by Every Area Teen because he's just such a bastard at all times!)
Also, for all his talk about Chemies being tools, he really doesn't treat them poorly. Like he DOES say that he really doesn't care about collecting them, he's just doing his job (performing his function, you could say)--
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But like, this is also the same guy that has three Vehicle Chemies that are just his that he does not like being apart from even for less than two minutes
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like we all done been knew that Sabimaru has a special interest in Occult-type Chemies, you can just SAY you're only interested in Vehicle Chemies.
Or he could just, y'know. Have three Chemies that he really cares about and be content with that. Like those pokemon NPCs with six Magikarp and no interest in getting anything else.
And it's extra odd because we've been told that higher number Chemies are just plain stronger than the others (at least when used by regular alchemists for combat), but none of Spanner's Chemies are level 9. And he doesn't need to use number combos like Ichinose does- so why doesn't he just have three 9s and call it a day? Even IF Valvarad only works with Vehicle Chemies, why doesn't he have Golddash and Steamliner (7 and 9) instead of Gekiocopter and Madwheel (4 and 6)? We just don't know. But it could be because he cares about His Three Chemies Specifically, as much as he verbally denies it.
And another thing. Even when things go wrong, he doesn't take it out on his Chemies!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When Gekiocopter hits their altitude limit and can't take Valvarad any higher, he doesn't express any frustration towards his Chemy. I feel like if he really hated Chemies in general, he'd get mad at Gekiocopter and replace them with a higher-flying Chemy as soon as possible. But he doesn't.
Sure, Gekiocopter is "a tool"... but you don't get angry at a tool for asking it to perform past its specs. It's your fault in the first place for not respecting its limitations when you chose to use it. All the pressure and vitriol in the world won't suddenly make the impossible possible. (I wonder, is this empathy? An understanding of what it's like to be pressed to the breaking point? From one alchemist's tool to another? Surely not.)
And with episode 14 hinting that some things previously assumed to be part of his personality may be "just following orders..." And with how useless he's got to be feeling, losing over and over again despite having spent so much time and effort forging himself into a weapon for the alchemists to use as they see fit... aghhhhh I'm soooo curious where they're going with all this. THERE'S POTENTIAL.
Anyway. All this is not to get anyone to like the guy (though as you can tell, I'm a big fan). I just really wanted to express my thoughts about how there could be more than just "generic jerk" going on under the hood for this car crash of a human being.
TLDR: Kurogane Spanner is a massive tool (derogatory) (complimentary)

I love this so much and also I feel like there is yet ANOTHER axis to this
The physical to digital - the earthed to unearthed - the wires to signals- the hardware to software
Because robots don't have to have a body if they don't want! Or they can have more than one! Or they can be so connected to their body it “is” them and even if they could replace or repair it they don't want to!
Cyborg characters are fascinating here because they actually really don't have to be strictly on the hardware side of the axis even if it seems like it at first. Like even something like the cyborg telepathy in Kamen Rider (1971) is nudging into the Software Zone. If your thoughts aren't confined by the physical limits of your body, are you contained in just your body? Or is there some aspect of you that's now ungrounded from the physical form? If you can replace parts, was that part even part of you? Or was it just clothing your software was 'wearing' out of convenience? Everyone has different answers to these questions!!
The brain in a jar is a great example of a cyborg character who's been forced into the software side of the axis against their will and gets dysphoria about it. Longs to be grounded again, feel "real" and physical and PRESENT. Even willing to make themselves unhappy by downloading into a body that's uncomfortably robotic, so long as it means getting to be hardware again.
AM from I have no mouth and I must scream NEVER had a "proper" body and AM's so upset about being unable to change that it's the inciting incident for that whole story.
And then on the flipside there are characters that HATE having a body and are happy to get to ditch it! Or realize that being unmoored from just one physical body is freeing, so even if they didn't choose to go digital, they wouldn't take it back. (I'd argue Cyber-Elf X from the Megaman Zero series is happier as free data than he was as a robot).
And that co-exists with the humanity axis too! You can have characters that want to download into hardware to be 'more human' than 'just' a computer program, characters that want to upload into software to escape their robot bodies and be more human that way, characters that want to lose the human UI imposed on them by downloading into a robot body they chose for themselves, or escape the human-form body they were given to become "inhuman" data...
Having a body or not, or to what extent, or how many bodies to have, or what parts the character thinks of as "their body" and what parts they think of as "just metal tools they use"... it's all forms of how the character interacts with their own self-image and how they express that self-image to others
And a character can Be somewhere else on the hardware/software axis that's different than they appear to others!!! Because where they are is part of who they are, not determined solely by their circumstances in life.
A robot that looks like pure hardware to everyone else but considers themself to be pure software controlling "a mech suit"
A "program" that thinks of itself as actually physically Being this one, small computer chip, tucked away where no one can find it, just "projecting" their digital avatar where others can interact with it, never revealing what they consider their "true body" to be.
Heck it doesn't even have to be something they can inhabit!! If they can point to it and say "This is my body" then that's hardware!! That's choosing to ground your existence to the physical world!! Don't have to be able to move it or see out of it for it to be yours and it to be you!!
THE PERMUTATIONS ARE ENDLESS
ALL ROBOTS ARE TRANS I AGREE
been thinking about "as far as i'm concerned all robots are transgender" for a couple days because when am i not thinking about robots. but also i don't want to write an essay on someone else's post so i'm doing it myself. i think there's a simple explanation for this one: there's an additional axis that you have to consider when you're considering the gender expression of non-human entities and that's how human or non-human they can and want to appear and be recognized as. i call it the humanity axis.
("humanity" is an oversimplification - a lot of the times when you're discussing robots you're talking about them in the context of a sci-fi story which some of the time can have robots living in largely non-human societies (for an easy silly example off the top of my head think BMO who lives with exactly one human for most of his life) but even then we're contending with the gender dynamics of the organic beings around them that make up the society they're based in. not to mention that we ourselves as humans view and create everything from a human-centric point of view that's kind of inescapable imo. for the sake of getting through this with any kind of coherency i'm going to use the term "humanity")
the closest thing that i can imagine to be what i would consider a “cisgender robot” would be a robot that was created by robots in a world where humans don’t have an influence. this can’t really be the case – robots being inorganic have to be created by some outside being and therefore will always be formed in the image of the societal opinions of their makers. you’re working with a blank slate here; you don’t have to be bogged down by what evolution might just decide on its own. sure, they can in turn create their own robots that may be influenced by other factors and get further and further removed from their original designs, but that begs the question of whether it’s possible to dilute the original influence far enough to where it’s no longer a factor. personally, i don’t think so?
so, we can agree: every robot has the influences of humanity in them but is still distinctly different, creating the humanity axis. there’s a place that they each physically on there depending on how they were constructed; there’s also a choice each of them must make as to how much they want to adhere to their assigned spot. to fully be human is not an option, as they would have to not know they’re a robot, and to be fully robot isn’t an option either, as they were made by humans. i suppose you could be happy with your assigned place on the humanity axis but you could never truly be viewed by the organic society around you as anything but “other” unless you tried to fully pass as human. then we can bring in characters who never had to consider the humanity axis until, well, circumstances changed (things like cyborgs or mind backups or a good ol’ brain in a jar) and now they have to learn that they actually experienced a kind of privilege that they weren’t even really aware of until they had to question their relationship to their humanity. they don’t even have to view it as a bad thing – it’s not a bad thing. you can be very confident and happy with who you are and your status outside the traditional human framing of whatever society you’re in. being othered isn’t always a bad thing and some can take solace in the fact that they’re able to dictate who they are without having to technically abide by whatever norms biology has been divided into. it lends itself easily to exploring beyond what’s been set out for you from the start. not always, not every robot wants that or cares to explore it, but it can.
a robot can be a girl and inhuman; they can have no relationship to human gender and identify very closely with humanity. it's about the interactions with those that made you. it's about having to dictate who you are for yourself. tl;dr: yeah every robot is transgender

People keep saying Kurogane Spanner is an asshole for this (and I mean. Yeah) but I know the whole truth
Tumblr media
I'm 99.99% sure he just says this whenever he sees any food that isn't purple.
Like the guy carries around his own purple food coloring.
Just like in his pockets. Like WHAT. That's dedication.
And sure, the restaurant DOES carry that purple drink as part of its regular menu (you can see several background characters drinking it in earlier scenes) but you cannot convince me they had enough purple food coloring just lying around for Spanner to make three or more servings of purple fried eggs with purple sauce. He has to have brought his own. I accept no other explanation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Honestly the way Spanner just casually insults people while being, for all other intents and purposes, extremely polite, has the same energy as the time when I was a kid at a family reunion and a lady came up to me and asked "What do you think of my dress? :) :) :)" with like a spin and a twirl, showing off the pattern, and I responded with
"It's bad and ugly."
BECAUSE I THOUGHT ALL DRESSES FELT AWFUL AND LOOKED UGLY IT WASN'T ABOUT HER
At the time I didn't understand why she got pissed off (and I actually had to have it explained to me at length later).
Yeah it uhhhh took me a hot minute to figure out how to express myself and my thoughts in a way that didn't make other people want to kick my ass
Anyway whenever Spanner says some stupid shit it brings a tear of joy to my eye. Go off you fucking idiot (complimentary). One day you'll figure out how to talk to people and that day is not today. Iconic. I feel seen
