The Sicilian Republic
Under the fiery gaze of Etna, the Greeks came and built the cities of Magna Graecia. The Romans arrived to make the land the bread-basket of the empire, followed by the Arabs of North Africa who built mosques only to be driven out by the Normans who lived in the finest villas and palaces. Then came the Spanish who rebuilt war-torn cities of Palermo and Catania and defined Sicilian Baroque architecture. Sicily is an island drenched in the mediterranean climate, fuelled by fruitful wine and olive oil and with a history that still stands today.

Scandinavian Summertime
Beyond the pines of Sweden to fjording around in Norway and stealing a whiff of hipster in  Denmark's capital. Summertime in the Scandinavian nations bursts out in nature, it festivalizes the people and tans the skin of its' cities with edge and style.

Morocco
The prayer call for Allah rings out 5 times a day as the fringe between Morocco and the Sahara desert shortens. Marrakech bustles, desert villages shepherd thier goats and sheep. Peppermint Tea, Saffron, Figs, Almonds, Cinnamon. One god. One rule. To squeeze life out of every drop of water and add flavour to every moment of the day. Morocco is a place of worship.

Ireland.
I found this to be a dull, bleak and forgetful place, but then again, a true breeding ground for a stoic bunch of people that emit almost the exact opposite traits.

The Barrio's of Buenos Aires.
The city I call the home of the 7-day weekend.  Like New York's Five Boroughs, the barrio's of Buenos Aires combine to give a diverse street feel hopping from one to the next. The charm of La Boca during the day makes way for sinister youths at night. Sociable Palermo crafts its name in fashion and art. Leafy Recoleta is where the breeze off the port truly is a buenos aire and classic San Telmo oozes kept history and Tango flare. Ole Ole Ola Argentina!

DIESEL+EDUN project: Studio Africa (by DieselPlanet)
My last post highlighted the deleterious effects of suppression of the african people and one man's vision of freedom and opportunity for his people. This post shows what can come from opportunity. It's a great collaboration between DIESEL and U2 lead singer Bono and his wife Ali Hewson (EDUN) that is born and bred in Africa.

The Rivonia Trial
A recent tour of South Africa finally gave me the time to read Nelson Mandela's Long Walk to Freedom. In it he describes the events of the day he was on trial, due to be sentenced to death for acts of sabotage and intent to overthrow the government through violence and guerilla warfare. In his final statement to the judge that lasted almost 5 hours he rebutted ridiculous charges against him and admitted to others but outlined the reasons for his actions, his struggle and his peoples vision of a democratic South Africa.
His concluding words resonate with me now as I read them, and as they did with everyone in the court and around the world on April 20, 1964.
"During my lifetime I have dedicated myself to this struggle of the African people. I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die".
Mandela was spared the death penalty but spent the next 27 years as a political prisoner in South Africa. I believe he is a great man.

Old Skool Afro-Cool
A young Nelson Mandela devoted himself to the liberation of his people. Almost a lifetime later, he succeeded. Here's the new generation that have him to thank for an Aparthied free South Africa since 1994.

NO HUNTING
Privileged to see these mythical creatures in the land they belong. The rare and majestic white lion is one the most beautiful things I have encountered. Sadly, a fully grown male lion evaded me. It's infuriating to think that some of us prefer to hunt and kill these animals, prizing them as our own possessions. What's even more pathetic is breeding for "canned hunting" - a form whereby the animal is confined to a smaller area than normal in order to make hunting easier and more profitable for game park owners.

The Land of South Africa and Lesotho
30 days. Over 6500km's. From sea, across rivers to highland mountain ranges. In wet, storming weather to sunny sea-breeze filled days. South Africa showed me its colours and diversity and Lesotho gave off the aura of a powerful and epic highland state.

Quote
I have traveled a good deal, though I don't really know how to travel. I like to take my time about it, leaving between one country and the next an interval in which to digest what I've seen. Once I have arrived in a new country, I feel almost like settling down there, so as to live on proper terms with the country. I could never be a globetrotter.
