With the atrocious powerpuff girls reboot script, jj abrams admitting that nobody planned ahead when writing the new star wars trilogy and now the cruella movie, I am becoming incredibly frustrated at the new standard for writing. Instead of creating something new or innovative, producers would rather buy the rights to pre-existing franchises and just shit out anything as quickly as they can.
Honestly, if not even the fact that everything is either a reboot or a remake that upsets me. What particularly baffles me is that no-one in the writing process seems to actually care about what they’re creating. Like, I genuinely think that someone could create a powerpuff girls reboot that’s interesting and examines what it meant to be superhero’s as children and how that affects them as adults. Instead, the show seems to have contempt for the source martial and didn’t bother to understand why people liked the powerpuff girls in the first place.
You could pick a random star wars fan out of the crowd at a convention and there’s a 50/50 chance that they would write something better than the rise of skywalker. im not saying that it would good movie, but it would be better simply because the fan would genuinely care about the story and the characters. As for cruella… I just don’t understand. There are dozens of other disney villans they could have chosen, but they went with the puppy killer?? All of these examples seem to stem from the fact that the people financing these projects are just so out of touch with the fans. Either that, or they just don’t care. They believe that if they have an already popular fandom, then the fans will give them their money no matter what. And you know what? They’re right.
As both a writer and a consumer of media, things like this make me feel so dis-heartened and ashamed of the way things are being written now. It can be really discouraging to realize that no matter how good you write, you will never make as much money or given the same opportunities as those who write absolute garage. It’s entertaining as hell to make fun of these things ngl but Im just so tired at losing out on the potential of better stories because of these shitty cash grabs.

“Your Wheezy, sir, your Wheezy — Wheezy who is giving Dobby his jumper!” Dobby plucked at the shrunken maroon sweater he was now wearing over his shorts. “What?” Harry gasped. “They’ve got… they’ve got Ron?” “The thing Harry Potter will miss most, sir!” squeaked Dobby.
