Notes about the Karasuno kids’ ages:
Asahi is the youngest member of the third years, Suga is the oldest. The academic year starts in April, and a good majority of the time, children who turn 6 on or before April 1 will be enrolled into first grade on that year. Technically, wrt the students’ ages, the year starts from April and ends in March, NOT January to December. Students born in April are generally the oldest, while students born during March are generally the youngest within their year. Which brings me to this:
Asahi and Noya are born on the SAME year. Noya is 10 months younger than Asahi, not almost 2 years younger.
As for Tanaka, he’s born March 3, meaning he’s the youngest of the 2nd years and is born the year following the other 2nd years, because, again, he’s well within the April 1 cut-off. Given that children begin elementary at 6 years old by the April of that year, and there are 6 years of elementary school, they graduate by the age of 12. You start the first year of middle school when you’re 12 turning 13 within that academic year, second year when you’re 13 turning 14, and so on… Then you’ll be 15 turning 16 when you begin high school. So hypothetically, if the manga is set in 2012, their years of birth would be :
1994: Suga (6/13), Daichi (12/31)
1995: Asahi (1/1), Kiyoko (1/6), Narita (8/17), Noya (10/10), Ennoshita (12/26)
1996: Kinoshita (2/15), Tanaka (3/3), Hinata (6/21), Yachi (9/4), Tsukki (9/27), Yamaguchi (11/10), Kageyama (12/22)
Tanaka was born on the same year as the first years, and Tanaka is just 3 months older than Hinata (lol).
BASICALLY what I’m trying to say is, Tanaka isn’t actually much older than the first years (honestly even with Kageyama, it’s less than a year’s difference) and Asahi isn’t really much older than Noya (yet people keep writing them with a two year difference…) and the Japanese school system isn’t the same as Western systems. Unless if we’re talking about International Schools. Which Karasuno (and p much every shonen manga hs out there) isn’t.
Also by the current HQ!! timeline, they should be around late October by now, so Hinata, Yachi and Tsukki are already 16, NOT 15. But I’m not sure if birthdays are a huge deal in Japan (they don’t seem to be?) so… /shrug
