Hi i wanted to ask!! Whats ur opinion on the mech animal designs from Horizon: Zero Dawn?

Ah yeah, people bring those a lot with me haha - I still haven't played the game (I plan to! Just very busy these days) but from the designs I've seen: they're pretty cool, through they have a lot of surface detail that doesn't relate to any clear function, and there are a lot of busy shapes. Maybe there is a story/context reason for this that I've missed, but overly cluttered designs are a bit of an issue in concept art/game design in general IMO. A lot of the design choices feel like "detail for the sake of detail." (But some of this is also definitely down to personal taste too!) My favorites tend to be the ones that don't really mimic a particular animal too closely. That T-rex-esque one is cool with it's very mechanical face, and whatever that giant tank-like one is with all the legs, that's up my alley! But I also just like tanks a lot haha In terms of good examples of "mechanimal" design, I like to point to Robert Chew's take: https://www.artstation.com/robertchew

These designs designs feel a lot more purposeful, to me, and look like something designed to work "out in the wild." Simpler shapes, lots of cloth and material keeping dust and grit out of vulnerable joints, stuff like that - to me, this has the right feel. But this is a very different aesthetic, it's a lot less flashy, and much more based around mimicking real wildlife. (Also, his work predates the HZD franchise, keep this in mind too) Anyway please go check out this dude's work, it totally rocks. Really glad that I got a chance to get/make this kit, it’s one of my favorite “hero robots”, and a really cool design from a great series. Thinking about getting the Space Pack to go with it, still on the fence, though.
